KUALA TERENGGANU - Police have recorded statements from three individuals in connection with the boat capsizing incident off Pulau Perhentian waters last Saturday, which claimed three lives.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the statements were recorded from three individuals, two men and a woman, aged between 22 and 39, to assist in the investigation.
"We have recorded statements from one of the passengers, the boat skipper and the boat skipper's brother. More witnesses will be called in to assist with the investigation,' he said.
"All survivors will be called in to provide statements so we can determine what truly happened. Much of what's being circulated now is based on hearsay. Through this investigation, there may be additional evidence we can document,' he said during the duty handover ceremony for the state deputy police chief at the Terengganu contingent police headquarters (IPK) today.
At the ceremony, the Terengganu Criminal Investigation Department chief, ACP Arsad Kamaruddin, was appointed as acting state deputy police chief, replacing Datuk Wan Rukman Wan Hassan, who went on compulsory retirement.
Khairi said police are in the process of preparing the investigation papers related to the case, which are expected to be completed within a week.
"Our investigation is focused on the incident itself, to determine whether any criminal elements contributed to it. Other aspects, such as boat or licence violations, fall under the jurisdiction of the Marine Department,' he said.
In the 10.30pm incident on Saturday, S. Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V. Vennpani, tragically lost their lives. Two others were injured, while 10 passengers survived the tragedy.
All the boat passengers, aged between three and 40, were returning from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner, when their boat was suddenly struck by large waves, causing it to capsize.

Azamuddin, when contacted by Bernama today, said the 22-year-old suspect, currently under remand to facilitate investigations under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, is expected to be charged in court tomorrow. - BERNAMA

Kaspersky also noted that local headlines in recent years have highlighted reported BEC cases that have proven financially devastating, with losses per incident ranging from RM250,000 to RM6.2 million, affecting victims from various sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, and kitchenware. Its managing director for Asia Pacific, Adrian Hia, said the real danger of BEC scams lies in their simplicity – just well-timed emails designed to exploit trust, routine and a moment of human error. 'Cybersecurity today must go beyond detection; it is about anticipation, helping businesses to spot the unusual in what seems normal and helping their stakeholders build cybersecurity habits that hold up under pressure,' he said. To avoid falling victim to BEC scams, Kaspersky advised using strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, investing in security tools with anti-BEC features, training staff to spot social engineering, limiting the public exposure of company hierarchies and key staff contacts, and always verifying suspicious emails through a separate communication channel. — BERNAMA

AGC Accepts Representation From Three Accused In Palestinian Kidnap Case
KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has accepted representations filed by three of the 14 individuals charged with abducting a Palestinian man in an attempt to obtain information related to mobile phone hacking software. Deputy public prosecutor Datuk Badius Zaman Ahmad informed High Court Judge K. Muniandy that the three accused, Edy Ko'im Said, 42, Muhammad Al Hatim Mohd Fauzi, 25 and Mohd Azwan Jamaludin, 39, had submitted their representations to the AGC last month. 'The case was initially fixed for trial today. However, following recent developments, the prosecution confirms that the AGC has accepted the representations and is offering alternative charges under Section 365 of the Penal Code to the three accused,' he said, adding that several other accused have also submitted representations. Judge Muniandy fixed July 10 for the alternative charges to be read to the three individuals and vacated the previously scheduled trial dates set for today, tomorrow and Wednesday. At today's proceedings, Edy Ko'im was represented by counsel Lingswaran Singh, Muhammad Al Hatim by Adi Zulkarnain Zulkafli and Mohd Azwan by Norma Goh Kim Lian. The 11 other accused have also been jointly charged in connection with the abduction of a 31-year-old Palestinian man, allegedly to extract confidential information on the development and deactivation of software used to hack mobile phones. KSN Awaits Full Report On Fake MC Case Linked To Civil Servant
MELAKA, July 7 (Bernama) -- Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said he is awaiting the results of an investigation into the alleged submission of fake medical certificates (MCs) by a civil servant in Sungai Petani, Kedah, as reported by the media yesterday. According to him, the investigation is still ongoing and he has yet to receive a full report on the case. '(The investigation) is still ongoing and the report will be submitted to me soon,' he told reporters after attending the Melaka-level Jelajah Taat Setia MADANI Programme at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh, here today. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh officiated the closing ceremony of the programme, which was also attended by Melaka State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad. The media yesterday reported that three individuals, including a heart patient, had been arrested over their suspected involvement in the sale of fake MCs. Their activities were uncovered following an internal probe into a policeman who frequently went on sick leave, with the MCs he submitted found to be suspicious. Meanwhile, in his speech at the programme, Shamsul Azri said civil servants' loyalty to leaders should not be seen as personal, but rather as loyalty to the principles of constitutional democracy. 'As civil servants, we serve a legitimate government in accordance with the law. We are not bound to any political party, but to the oath of office we have taken to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law. 'Loyalty to leaders is not individualistic in nature but a means of strengthening national stability, enhancing administrative effectiveness, and ensuring the continuity of lawfully formulated national policies,' he said.
