Starmer demands BBC explanation for broadcasting Bob Vylan's 'appalling' chant

Daily Mirror13 hours ago

Chanting on a stage at Glastonbury, Bob Vylan called for the death of Israeli soldiers, footage which was available on BBC iPlayer until the corporation took it down
Keir Starmer has demanded BBC bosses "explain" how a punk duo calling for the death of Israeli soldiers was broadcast from Glastonbury.
Pro-Palestine act Bob Vylan chanted "death, death to the IDF" in a sickening rant on stage at the festival. Bobby Vylan, singer and guitarist of the duo, has since posted a defiant message on Instagram, despite police confirming officers are looking into his tirade.

And the Prime Minister, who also said Glastonbury Festival organisers should not have let controversial rappers Kneecap appear on stage, has described Bob Bylan's words as "appalling hate speech". Mr Starmer, 62, said: "There is no excuse for this kind of appalling hate speech. I said that Kneecap should not be given a platform and that goes for any other performers making threats or inciting violence. The BBC needs to explain how these scenes came to be broadcast."

The BBC, which did not stream Kneecap live, conceded comments made by Bob Vylan were "deeply offensive". The duo's performance is no longer available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Event chiefs said they were "appalled" after the music double act led the crowd in "death to the IDF" chants during their performance. Glastonbury had previously said all are welcome at the festival but added it "does not condone hate speech or incitement to violence of any kind from its performers".
Referring to Bob Vylan, Glastonbury organisers said on Sunday: "Their chants very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence."
Israeli politicians, including the country's deputy foreign minister, Sharren Haskel, blasted the BBC and Glastonbury for failing to cut off the performance during the live broadcast.
The singer from the pro-Palestine punk act, who keeps his identity secret, also shouted "from the river to the sea Palestine... will be free" - regarded by Jews as a call for Israel 's elimination. IDF stands for Israel Defence Forces, the national military of the State of Israel, which is currently involved with the war in Gaza, one of two remaining Palestinian territories.

Avon and Somerset Police are now examining video evidence and investigating if any offence had been committed. However, Bobby Vylan has since said on Instagram: "I said what I said." The dad shared a lengthy statement to follow up, in which he stated: "Tomorrow it is a change in foreign policy."
A BBC spokesperson said: "We have made an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on iPlayer, as part of our online collection of more than 90 other sets.
"We have edited it to ensure the content falls within the limits of artistic expression in line with our editorial guidelines and reflects the performance from Glastonbury's West Holts stage.
"As with all content which includes strong language, this is signposted with appropriate warnings. As we have said before, acts are booked by the festival, and the BBC doesn't ban artists. We didn't stream Kneecap live.
"Some of the comments made during Bob Vylan's set were deeply offensive. During this live stream on iPlayer, which reflected what was happening on stage, a warning was issued on screen about the very strong and discriminatory language. We have no plans to make the performance available on demand."

I paid a hypnotist £950 to ‘cure' me of my addiction to bad boys – but still ran back to my red flag ex after a 2am text

Find out why she hasn't been in a proper relationship for ten years UNDER A SPELL I paid a hypnotist £950 to 'cure' me of my addiction to bad boys – but still ran back to my red flag ex after a 2am text Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A DECADE ago, Jana Hocking hit rock bottom. She woke up with sickening shame at the memory of crying at her ex-boyfriend's front door, begging him to come out and talk to her. Their four-year relationship had been like watching soap opera - explosive arguments galore, passionate reconciliations, cheating, two stints in prison (him, not her), and several family-led interventions begging Jana to leave. But despite all the anger issues and insane jealousy, she loved him - madly. However, that night was different, the Daily Mail columnist recently revealed. Up until them, the couple's ''usual pattern was fight, sulk, then make-up sex''. read more on dating SWIPE RIGHT I'm the most liked man on Hinge but I've still not found The One But when she showed up to his house to repeat the same routine - one they had followed so many times - he didn't come to the door. Instead, she got a muffled ''f**k off'' through the glass, before his mate emerged to break the news that it was officially over. Heartbroken and humiliated, Jana called her mother, who came over and slept next to her, as she sobbed for hours on end. While she was relieved the relationship had come to an end, she was worried for her daughter. ''The next morning, she handed me a book on limerence (an unhealthy, involuntary obsession with another person) and gently suggested I see a therapist.'' She read the book and saw the therapist - but the pain didn't go away and she longed to see her ex-partner. I paid £20 for Tinder and can't stand little-known loophole desperate guys use So when a pal mentioned a hypnotist who had just moved into her office building, Jana didn't think twice. ''Surely this woman could rewire my brain to stop going for bad boys (spoiler alert: this wasn't my first rodeo) and finally make me fall for the elusive 'nice guy'?'' she wondered. 15 Relationship red flags to look out for Red flags are warning signs that indicate unhealthy or manipulative behaviour. When you encounter relationship red flags, it's a good time to pause and reflect on the dynamic you really share with that person. Overly controlling behaviour Lack of trust Feeling low self-esteem Physical, emotional, or mental abuse Substance abuse Narcissism Anger management issues Codependency Inability to resolve conflict Constant jealousy Gaslighting Lack of emotional intelligence Negatively affecting your relationship with family and friends Inability to communicate openly Lack of social connection or friends For more advice and support, Relate is available: "Whether it's your relationship with a partner, a child, a family member or anyone else - we help everyone to build better relationships." In total, the hypnotist reckoned Jana would need four sessions minimum, each one setting her back almost £240. She was a broke junior producer living off instant noodles, but she was desperate. Jana raided her savings and paid the hefty £950 upfront. For the next month, she 'put Jana under' once a week, and dug through childhood memories, whilst reframing thought patterns, and implanting healthy boundaries in her brain. But there was a plot twist - the hypnotist set the boundaries so high, that it's now been a decade since Jana has had ''a proper boyfriend''. Before this, she might have overlooked a few red flags. Now, one tiny whiff of toxic traits is enough for Jana to run away as fast as she can. ''I've become maddeningly picky. My mother calls it 'too picky'. I call it finally having standards.'' Sadly, the hypnotist didn't cure Jana of her attraction to bad boys - but while they still get her going, the singleton no longer dates them. 'You up?' Fast-forward to six months after the brutal break-up, Jana received an unexpected text from her ex-boyfriend at 2am. ''You up?'' read the text to which Jana tried her hardest to ignore. ''Did the hypnotist fix you yet? Nice guys are fun lol,'' he messaged almost 15 minutes later. ''Come over. I'll behave if you do.'' Like a moth to a flame, Jana booked an Uber and drove straight to his house for one last hurrah. But when the red flag ex suggested getting back together the following morning, Jana didn't feel anything - ''just closure''. While the hypnotist may not have stopped the singleton from hopping into bed with her ''bad boy ex'' she did at least stop her from committing to men like him. However, there's a small problem - she may have accidentally stopped her dating full-stop. More therapy, soul-searching and even a psychic or two - Jana has since tried everything. But a decade later, it feels like her ''forever man'' is not coming after all. ''It turns out there are no quick fixes for heartbreak. No magic wands. ''Just hard lessons, a lot of unsexy self-work, and hopefully one day… a nice guy who still manages to make me feel just the right kind of dangerous.''

Christine McGuinness says she's 'scared' of dating apps as she teases over exes

Former Celebs Go Dating participant Christine McGuinness has shared that she has never used a dating app, with her opening up about her concerns on her Situationships podcast Podcast host Christine McGuinness has shared her thoughts on dating apps after revealing that she's never used one. She's revealed that she's concerned over one aspect, which she said she would be "petrified" of. Christine, 37, has spoken about dating in the years since it was announced that she had split from Paddy McGuinness in 2022. She even briefly took part in the new series of Celebs Go Dating, which is yet to air on E4, and is expected to return in the finale. ‌ She's now giving fans an insight into her personal life on the new BBC podcast Situationships with Sophie and Christine, which launched earlier this month. Christine co-hosts the newly launched podcast with author Sophie Gravia. ‌ A discussion about dating apps in the first episode saw Christine open up about her concerns. It came after the mention of 'catfishing' and Sophie recalling a date with someone who was "not all all" how she had expected them to look based on the photos that had been on his profile. Christine, who revealed that she's "never been on a dating app," asked: "Do you not think to like FaceTime or check that the person is who they say they are?" Sophie, who's now in a relationship, replied by saying that she would "never do it" and that she hasn't been on dating apps for years. Her co-host Christine then shared: "I would be petrified of who could turn up and who am I talking to and yeah ... no, it scares me." Sophie went on to tell her: "I think they are gonna go out of fashion. I think everyone's getting fed up." Sharing her thoughts, Christine added: "I think it should come with like ... almost like a TripAdvisor ... like a review thing. Maybe like reviews from people's exes or something." After discussing the idea together, Christine said: "Imagine what people's exes would say about them." She teased: "I mean, mine, obviously, would all be five stars reviews." ‌ Sophie however admitted that she's treated some potential partners differently to her boyfriend. She said: "How I've acted in the past to certain people because I don't necessarily like them isn't a true representation of how I would act, for instance, to my boyfriend, who I like." Christine said on the podcast: "It's part of the problem. I mean, for me, it's something I've really struggled with is ... the idea of dating and not going well, then how do you get out of it? Cause I wouldn't want to upset somebody." ‌ Earlier in the episode, Christine had spoken about dating in the aftermath of her split from Paddy, which was announced three years ago. She told her co-host Sophie: "It took me a while to even think about dating." Christine said she fell into some "situationships" where "friendships had blurred the lines" and then had her first date with someone who she had briefly first met out. She said that they then spoke for months on social media before going on a date. She said: "My first proper date ever, ever in my life, with somebody that I didn't actually know. But I took those months of messaging to feel comfortable." The podcast Situationships with Sophie and Christine is available through BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds.

Boxing icon Butterbean sends fight offer to Jake Paul after shedding over 200lbs

Butterbean has sent a direct message to Jake Paul, telling the YouTube star that he is "coming for him" following his unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Butterbean has threatened to come out of retirement as he issued a bold challenge to Jake Paul, following his body transformation. The ex-boxer, whose real name is Eric Esch, hasn't fought since his 2013 defeat to Kirk Lawton. However, the 58-year-old insists he is ready to return, but for one fight only. In an Instagram video promoting Lucky Energy, the former heavyweight champion claims that Paul "runs his damn mouth too much" and mocks him for only being able to fight "retired bald men" - which is a likely dig at his controversial win over Mike Tyson. ‌ The video showcases Butterbean's collaboration with the energy drink company and his 'Knockout Punch' flavour. In the skit, a Paul lookalike responds to the challenge before getting hit by a wheelchair, thrown by Butterbean's fake promoter, Mr Lucky. ‌ This new callout comes after Problem Child's recent improvement to a 12-1 record, following a unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Saturday night. Although Paul made several callouts post-fight, he did not respond to a match with Butterbean. Despite the likely comedic intent behind Butterbean's challenge as part of an advert, it isn't the first time the ex-boxer has tried to square off with Paul in the ring. Before the highly anticipated bout between Tyson and Paul in November 2024, Butterbean revealed he was prepared to step into the ring with the 28-year-old if necessary. In a TikTok video posted just before the fight, the former heavyweight champ said: "Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, I am going to be at the fight to challenge the winner of the fight, Yeah. Mike, if you fall out again, I'll be there to take your place." ‌ Butterbean first expressed his desire to take on the Problem Child back in March 2022 when Paul had an undefeated record of 5-0, having beaten the likes of Tyron Woodley, Ben Askren, and Nate Robinson. Discussing his impressive weight loss and return to training after retirement, Butterbean said: "I'm working with DDP (Diamond Dallas Page) to get up walking and running around again and I'm feeling the best shape I ever have. ‌ "I'm at fight weight. You'll have to listen to my podcast coming up to find exactly how much weight I have lost, but I haven't weighed this in over 20 years so that'll give you an idea. "The big announcement is I'm gonna fight one last fight. It's gonna be one year from now. Jake Paul, if you're ready, I'm here for you my friend. Let's get it on, me and you Jake Paul. I bet it would be an awesome fight. After you said what you said about me in the magazine, I'm ready to fight you. Are you ready? I don't think so." There have been many more callouts since then, but the duo have not yet met to discuss the terms of what could be a sensational showdown in the sport. However, Butterbean's recent jibe at the young fighter might just be the catalyst needed to bring them together in the ring for possibly the most unusual fight to date.
