Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said the state government is adopting "out-of-the-box ideas" to strengthen the education sector, which he described as a key to eradicate poverty and social ills.Addressing a gathering after felicitating students who cleared the NEET exam, Mann said a paradigm shift had taken place in the education sector over the last three years due to revolutionary steps taken by the state government.Mann said, "This is the red letter day as 509 students from government schools have cracked the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions into medical colleges," according to an official statement.He said education, healthcare, infrastructure, industry, sports, employment and the fight against drugs are the government's top priorities.No freebie or concession cards can eliminate poverty or other social maladies in the state, instead it is education that holds the key that can pull people out of this vicious circle by raising their standard of living, he said.The chief minister said that his government is tirelessly making efforts to improve the standard of education to empower common people.For the first time in the state a mass campaign in the form of "Yudh Nashesyan Virudh (war against drugs)" has been launched under which drug offenders are being arrested and action is being intensified, he added.Mann said that after assuming the charge of office his government is trying "to clear the mess created by their predecessors over the past 70 years"."Some of our youngsters got overage for government jobs due to the lackadaisical approach of previous governments," he said, adding that now under the AAP government over the past three years 54,000 youths have secured jobs completely on the basis of merit.Mann said that in a "good omen" for the state, "reverse migration is being witnessed in Punjab as youth are leaving foreign land to join government jobs in the state." It is because the recruitment process is completely transparent.Due to the efforts of his government the youth's faith in working for the state government have increased, shunning the idea of moving abroad, he said.However, the chief minister said that a lot of brain drain took place due to the "apathetic approach of the previous regimes due to which a large number of youngsters had earlier migrated from the state".Mann said since the AAP government has adopted a course correction, a large number of students are becoming an integral part of the socio-economic development of the state by joining government jobs.He said that the state government's concerted efforts for empowering women in the state has led to girls excelling in all the fields today and are even outnumbering boys.Mann further pointed out that his government has appointed seven women officers as deputy commissioners and eight women have been appointed senior superintendents of police. 'Preamble not changeable': VP Dhankhar weighs in on Constitution debate; calls for 'reflection'
NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday called the Preamble as the soul of the constitution. Speaking at a book launch event, Dhankhar acknowledged that India was the only country where the Preamble had been amended, a reference to the 42nd Amendment enacted during the Emergency in 1976. The Vice President's came following comments by RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who questioned the legitimacy of the inclusion of 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble — a position that has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. On Thursday, Hosabale stirred political waters by arguing at an event marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency that 'secular' and 'socialist' were inserted into the Constitution during a period of authoritarian rule and should now be reviewed. He said these terms were not part of the original draft authored by Dr B R Ambedkar and were forcibly added during a time when civil liberties were crushed and democratic institutions undermined. BJP leaders including Union ministers Jitendra Singh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan said any 'right-thinking citizen' would support such a review. 'The word secularism was added during the Emergency. It should be removed. The country should think about this,' Chouhan said, arguing that equality of all religions is already the Indian ethos. Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC echoed the sentiment, suggesting that terms like 'pseudo-secularism' have undermined India's democratic principles. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday was conferred with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' at the centenary celebrations of Jain saint Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj. The centenary celebrations mark the formal commencement of a year-long national tribute to the spiritual leader, being organised by the Union Culture Ministry.(PTI) "On this occasion, you honoured me with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti'. I do not consider myself suitable for this. But it is our culture that whatever we receive from saints, we accept it as 'prasad'. So, I humbly accept this 'prasad' and dedicate it to Maa Bharati," PM Modi said during his speech. The centenary celebrations mark the formal commencement of a year-long national tribute to the spiritual leader, being organised by the Union Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti Trust, Delhi. Talking about how today's date is special as Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received his title on this very day in 1987, which represented a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting Jain culture to ideas of restraint and compassion. "This day is also special because on 28th June 1987, Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received the title of 'Acharya'. It wasn't just an honour but it was also a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting the Jain culture to ideas, restraint and compassion," PM Modi said. "When we are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary today, it reminds us of that historic moment. On this occasion, I bow to the feet of Acharya Shri Munirajji. I pray that his blessings are with us always. People, these centenary celebrations are not just any normal event. It has the memory of a time period and the remembrance of an ascetic life. The centenary year will be observed from June 28, 2025 to April 22, 2026, with a range of cultural, literary, educational, and spiritual initiatives across the country, aimed at celebrating the life and legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj, according to an official statement from the ministry of culture. The Acharya was born on April 22, 1925, in Shedbal, Belagavi (Karnataka). He received his initiation at a young age and went on to become one of the most prolific Jain scholars of modern times, having memorised over 8,000 Jain Agamic verses. He has authored over 50 works on Jain philosophy and ethics, including Jain Darshan, Anekantavada, and Mokshamarg Darshan. He travelled barefoot across Indian states for several decades, strictly adhering to Kayotsarga meditation, brahmacharya, and extreme austerity. He was instrumental in the restoration and revival of ancient Jain temples across India, including those in Delhi, Vaishali, Indore, and Shravanabelagola, and was closely associated with the Shravanabelagola Mahamastakabhishek and the 2600th Janm Kalyanak Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira. He identified the site of Kundgram (now Basokund) in Bihar as the birthplace of Bhagwan Mahavir, a finding later recognised by the Government of India in 1956. The centenary year will feature programs across India, focusing on community engagement, youth participation, interfaith dialogue, temple outreach, and Jain heritage awareness, ensuring that the timeless message of Acharya Vidyanand Ji reaches future generations.

‘Sandals featured are still at design stage': Prada breaks silence on Kolhapuri chappal controversy
Prada has finally broken their silence and acknowledged the use of Kolhapuri chappals in their latest Spring-Summer 2026 Men's collection, following a long-drawn controversy warranting concerns of cultural appropriation. The Italian luxury fashion house has recognised and validated Kolhpauris' Indian connection, saying the design is 'inspired' by the Indian handcrafted footwear. However, they mentioned that 'the sandals featured in the men's 2026 fashion show are still at the design stage and none of the pieces worn by models on the ramp are confirmed to be commercialised,' reported PTI. A few days ago in its show notes, Prada had described the footwear as 'leather sandals,' with no reference to an Indian connection, evoking outrage from many in India's fashion community as well as traditional makers of Kolhapuri chappals in western Maharashtra. Artisans from Maharashtra had cried foul after footwear similar to the famous Kolhapuri chappals featured in Prada's show, alleging violation of geographical identification (GI) rights. 'We acknowledge that the sandals featured in the recent Prada Men's 2026 Fashion Show are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage. We deeply recognize the cultural significance of such Indian craftsmanship,' a representative from Prada said in a reply to Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA). MACCIA president Lalit Gandhi had previously written to the fashion house after seeing the visuals, in the interest of the local artisans and the industry. 'The Kolhapuri chappal is very distinct and we want our footwear to go to newer markets. But it has to get the rightful recognition,' Gandhi had told PTI on Saturday. BJP MP Dhananjay Mahadik had also led a delegation of artisans who make this traditional footwear to meet Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to look into the violation and preserve the product, which is a symbol of the state's cultural heritage. The chamber also sought exploration collaborations and fair compensation to the artisans and also an adherence to ethical fashion practices that respect traditional knowledge and cultural rights, in the context of the traditional handcrafted leather sandal being awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status by the Government of India in 2019. 'We are committed to responsible design practices, fostering cultural engagement, and opening a dialogue for a meaningful exchange with local Indian artisan communities as we have done in the past in other collections to ensure the rightful recognition of their craft,' Prada's group head for corporate social responsibility, Lorenzo Bertelli, said in his reply. Kolhapuris are slip-on chappals handcrafted from premium quality leather by skilled artisans who have been at it for generations. Not only are Kolhapuri chappals built to last, their durability and unmatched comfort make them a favourite among the Indian crowd. In fact, once you bypass their break-in period, these slippers take the shape of the wearer's feet over time and provide a custom fit. According to Shweta Navandar, associate professor, department of fashion communication, Pearl Academy, Mumbai, historically, Kolhapuris can be traced back to the 12th century during the reign of King Bijjal of Karnataka and his prime minister, Vishwaguru Basavanna, who worked to uplift the cobbler community. However, it wasn't until the 20th century, under the rule of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur, that the footwear began to be widely traded,' she told Kolhapuri chappals are a piece of Indian heritage. Wearing them supports traditional craftsmanship and helps preserve an age-old art form. They can serve you for many years with proper care, making them a sustainable and cost-effective choice in the long run.
