Wells and Grisham back in starting lineup for Yankees in series finale against Toronto
Grisham was set to lead off and play center field, while Wells was behind the plate catching right-hander Clarke Schmidt and batting eighth.
Wells and Grisham came off the bench
in Wednesday's
11-9 loss
. The setback was New York's third straight and the Yankees slipped into a tie for first place in the AL East with Toronto.
New York is 13-18 since May 28.
'We've gone through it a little bit here the last few weeks,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'Obviously haven't played our best. We need to do better, but I'm confident we will.'
Wells hadn't started since Saturday, against the Athletics. Boone said Wells needed time to recover from an invasive test for a circulatory issue in his left index finger.
Grisham left Monday's game after his cleat caught the turf, leading to tightness in his left hamstring.
'He feels good about it, the training staff feels good about it,' Boone said. 'Is it 100 percent? Maybe not, but I feel good that he's good enough and sound enough to go.'
Grisham is batting .248 with 15 homers and 32 RBIs in 73 games. He hit a career-high 17 homers with San Diego in 2022.
'He's been so important to us on both sides of the ball, just his center field play, his at-bat quality all year,' Boone said. 'He has hit for power, he has got on base. He has been a really good two-way player, an All-Star-caliber player for us in the first half. Big to be able to avoid (the injured list).'
Boone said right-hander Luis Gil threw 35 pitches and did some fielding practice drills in a scheduled throwing session Thursday. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year has not pitched for the Yankees this season because of a high-grade lat strain in his pitching shoulder.
Also Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed infielder CJ Alexander on waivers. The Yankees designated Alexander for assignment on June 30.

Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt goes on injured list and heads for scan of forearm
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list because of right forearm soreness on Friday, one day after his start at Toronto was cut short following three innings. A 29-year-old right-hander, Schmidt was set to have an MRI on Friday. Advertisement New York also recalled right-hander Scott Effross and left-hander Jayvien Sandridge from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Right-hander Clayton Beeter had been optioned to the RailRiders after replacing Schmidt on Thursday night and taking the loss in the 8-5 defeat as the Yankees were swept in a four-game series and dropped out of the AL East lead. Schmidt allowed three runs, four hits that included George Springer's two-run homer and two walks. He said he's been dealing with soreness in his arm since his June 4 outing against Cleveland. 'Earlier on in the game it felt OK,' Schmidt said. 'As the game progressed it sort of tightened up a little bit on me. I felt like the whole night I was kind of guarding it a little bit on the breaking balls, really not ripping them or trying to get a lot behind them.' Advertisement Schmidt, who had Tommy John surgery in May 2017, is 4-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 14 starts. He left a June 21 start against Baltimore after throwing a career-high 103 pitches in seven hitless innings, part of a streak of 28 1/3 scoreless innings. 'Any time you're getting an MRI on your forearm, or whatever the body part is, you're not feeling happy about it,' Schmidt said. 'I'm praying everything is going to be clean and minor. We'll see what happens.' ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Timberwolves Assistant Micah Nori Targeted For Knicks Job
Timberwolves Assistant Micah Nori Targeted For Knicks Job originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks are back in their chase for Minnesota Timberwolves coaches, but this time, it is not Chris Finch. They are now set to interview assistant coach Micah Nori, who has been a well-known assistant since 2009. Advertisement However, Nori has done a great job at being the lead assistant to Finch since 2021. They have worked well and produced results, most notably being their two consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances in 2024 and 2025. Credit: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images After parting ways with Tom Thibodeau due to their loss in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks have been hard at work at finding his replacement. They even tried to contact Finch, Ime Udoka, and Jason Kidd to interview for the job. The teams did not grant the Knicks permission, as Udoka even signed a contract extension with the Houston Rockets. Their latest target is Nori, who has been an excellent assistant across 16 years in the NBA. This includes the 2024 Playoffs when Finch suffered a torn patellar tendon. Nori has become well-respected around the league due to his multiple stints with teams, including the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons, and the Timberwolves. He previously interviewed with the Phoenix Suns earlier in 2025, but he was not part of the finalists. Now, Nori is gunning for an even bigger job with the Knicks. Advertisement During his time with the Timberwolves, he has been featured in many tactical breakdowns and sideline interviews. He has become notorious for his unique metaphors and has been commended for communicating the Timberwolves' strategies well. That could translate well to the Knicks job, especially with his experience of coaching All-NBA big man Karl-Anthony Towns. Losing Nori Would Be A Big Blow For The Timberwolves Finch and Nori have formed a strong partnership since they joined the team in 2021. They have been the top two coaches on the team, and it is evident the players love Nori. Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards has even called him an extension of Finch when Nori had to lead practice in Finch's absence. Advertisement "He's an extended version of Finchy. They always together, they're always talking. So it's pretty much the same. Finchy still here, still talkin', regulating s**t. So it's no different," Edwards said back in May 2024. With the connection they have built through the years, it would be a shame if the Timberwolves lose Nori to the Knicks. However, the team would be pleased to see him get a head coaching job. It is not assured he will get the job though, as he has some stiff competition. He is the third coach they have interviewed, as former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins and former two-time Coach of the Year winner Mike Brown are vying for the same position. 2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest: Live updates, highlights as Joey Chestnut returns to Coney Island
Everyone's favorite Fourth of July tradition is back, with the 2025 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest set to take place once again from Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. The major players remain the same — Joey Chestnut for the men's competition, and Miki Sudo for the women's, who each hold the respective records for most hot dogs eaten in their respective events. But last year's contest was an anomaly of sorts, as Major League Eating star Chestnut faced a one-year ban thanks to his partnership with Impossible Foods, a direct competitor with Nathan's Famous. Now, he'll make his return to the field and look to break his own record of 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the annual event. Technically, his own personal record is a bit higher, having eaten 83 hot dogs in a competition of his own last year while on the outskirts, head-to-head against Takeru Kobayashi. He is a heavy odds favorite to win the men's competition at -1800 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Advertisement With Chestnut out of the field in 2024, Patrick Bertolette took home the win with 58 total hot dogs in 10 minutes. He holds the second-best odds to win this year's competition at +1000, though Chestnut, notably, has exceeded that total in all but one of his 16 wins at the event. Sudo, headlining the women's competition, enters this contest seeking her 11th win, having won 10 of the last 11 years of the event. The only season she did not manage a win (2021), she was out due to pregnancy, and Michelle Lesco took home the mustard belt with 30 3/4 hot dogs eaten. Her own personal best came just last year with 51 hot dogs eaten, setting a new record in the women's competition. Date: Friday, July 4 Advertisement Time: 10:45 a.m. ET (women's competition); 12 p.m. ET (men's) Location: Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY TV channel: ESPN2 Read more on the 20252 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest from Yahoo Sports' Chris Cwik, and follow along with Yahoo Sports for live updates, highlights and more here:
