Penang's ferry terminal to get a major glow-up
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Port Commission (PPC) is set to undertake a major upgrade of the Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda (PRTU) ferry terminal as part of broader efforts to modernise ferry services and improve public transport connectivity across the state.
Located at the heart of George Town's ferry network, the PRTU terminal will be revitalised with a fresh, contemporary design aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and improving operational efficiency.
PPC chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said a request for proposal (RFP) had been issued.
The upgraded terminal is expected to feature a range of new facilities, including open-air parking, a sea-view observatory deck, food and beverage outlets, a garden bridge, and other tourism-friendly commercial amenities.
"The enhancement of PRTU is part of a wider initiative to improve Penang's ferry operations, which has already seen the introduction of four new ferries and upgrades to the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal (PSAH) in Butterworth," he said.
"The modernisation of PRTU is intended to strengthen integration between ferry services and other modes of public transport, delivering smoother connections for both locals and visitors.
"This redevelopment is more than just an infrastructure project — it is a step towards improving comfort, accessibility, and the overall experience for ferry users, while also contributing to Penang's tourism economy," he told a press conference today.
Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke conducted an official visit to Penang Port.
Yeoh said that the new commercial components of the upgraded terminal are aimed at transforming PRTU into not only a transport hub but also a vibrant destination in its own right, attracting both domestic and international visitors.
"The upgrade aligns with Penang Port's broader development strategy, which includes port expansion initiatives, green efforts such as solar energy integration, and digital transformation through systems like the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS)," he said.
"The transformation of PRTU reflects Penang's growing emphasis on sustainable urban mobility and supports Malaysia's broader goals of strengthening its maritime and tourism sectors ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026."
Penang Port has recently marked several milestones, including the enhancement of the Butterworth North Container Terminal (BNCT), which now handles up to 2.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with improved berth capacity and shorter ship waiting times.
The Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) has also been extended to accommodate Oasis-class cruise ships, enabling simultaneous berthing for up to 12,000 passengers.
Loke also reviewed the NBCT Expansion Master Plan, which spans 322.83ha through land reclamation.
Another key infrastructure initiative on the horizon is the Northern Petroleum Terminal (NPT) project — a petroleum hub in the northern region designed for bulk storage and capable of handling Medium Range (MR) tanker vessels.

Settle summonses or face enforcement, RTD warns commercial operators
KOTA BARU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) says it will act against express buses and commercial goods vehicles that fail to settle outstanding summonses within the 14-day deadline. RTD director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the deadline will end on July 8, after which enforcement will follow. He said the vehicles will be blacklisted and barred from the roads if payment is not made before the deadline. "We guarantee that by midnight on the final day, RTD officers will be on the roads to act against the vehicles found to have unsettled summonses. We are fully prepared for this. "Since the announcement by Transport Minister Anthony Loke last Friday, company operators have been rushing to pay their summonses. "If any company feels the number of summonses issued does not match their records, they are welcome to visit the nearest RTD office for verification. "They may even find that they have more summonses upon further checks," he said. He was speaking at a press conference after attending the RTD's Setia Assembly here today. Also present was RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan.

Sabah readies for Visit Malaysia Year 2026
Published on: Sunday, June 29, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 29, 2025 By: Wu Vui Tek Text Size: Liew joined by guests and children in traditional dresses launch the conference and expo. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is taking strategic steps to prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Explore Sabah 2026/2027 by showcasing authentic, inclusive, and impactful tourism experiences, said Datuk Seri Christina Liew. The State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister said among them is to focus on expanding economic opportunities for Community-Based Tourism (CBT) operators and introducing innovative approaches to elevate the sector. 'These forward-thinking efforts will not only enhance Sabah and Malaysia's competitiveness but ensure we stay rooted in our cultural values and commitment to sustainability,' said Liew at the launch of the two-day CBT Conference and Expo 2025 at Suria Sabah. She said this is a first scale event of its kind, reflecting the increasing dedication to tourism that uplifts and empowers local communities. 'It is a dynamic movement to preserves culture, protects nature and creates economic opportunities for local people. 'In a world searching for sustainable and inclusive solutions, Sabah is ready to lead by example,' said Liew. Sabah Tourism Board (STB) Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said the conference serves as a platform to further promote knowledge exchange among CBT practitioners, inspire local communities, and introduce global best practices that can be adapted. STB Chief Executive Officer Julinus Jeffery Jimit said many local tourism products are still in the early stages and require further support and capacity-building to grow. 'This signals a shift in the travel industry, where mass tourism is gradually giving way to a model that prioritises local community involvement,' he said. He said the aim of CBT is to improve the socio economy of the rural areas as tourism is one of the three pillars under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development plan, alongside agriculture and industry. It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of ending poverty, eradicating hunger, improving education and building sustainable community, he said. 'We cannot do it alone, but if we share one mission, one purpose, and if all stakeholders align, we believe we can turn these goals into reality,' he said. He the CBT activities generated around RM6 million in income across 18 districts in 2023, and increased to RM7 million last year. 'Our goal is to push the income above the poverty line index,' he said. The conference features success stories and key experts from Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia who will take part in knowledge-sharing and networking session aimed at strengthening local initiatives and illustrating best practices in CBT. The event is co-organised by STB and United Nations Development Programme. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tourism Malaysia anticipates boost in Australian visitors with new flight route
PETALING JAYA: Tourism Malaysia is eagerly anticipating an increase in Australian visitors with AirAsia now operating the Darwin-Kuala Lumpur route. Tourism Malaysia celebrated the arrival of AirAsia's inaugural flight from Darwin, Australia, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 2) on Friday (June 27). The route marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity and opening a new gateway for tourists and business travellers between Malaysia and Australia's Northern Territory. Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry deputy secretary-general Chua Choon Hwa stated that the new route will build momentum towards the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026). "The vital Darwin-Kuala Lumpur route is a testament to Australia's standing as one of Malaysia's top visitor-generating markets. The launch is perfectly timed as we celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2025 and build momentum towards VM2026," he said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming more Australian visitors to experience our unique cultural diversity and commitment to sustainable tourism," added Chua. In 2024, Malaysia recorded 447,785 visitor arrivals from Australia, which is an 11.7% increase from 2023 and 6.3% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. For the year 2025, Malaysia is targeting 43 million international visitor arrivals, expected to generate RM283.8 billion in visitor receipts. The Darwin-Kuala Lumpur route will operate four times a week, namely on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. The Airbus A320neo aircraft that will be used for the route has a seating capacity of 180 people.
