Shah chairs important meeting on Indus Waters Treaty issue
New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is holding an important meeting with the Union Jal Shakti Ministry on Friday on further action to be taken after India decided to hold in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
According to sources, the meeting is being attended by Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and senior officials of related ministries.
The meeting is expected to focus on the subsequent actions and the general framework for executing the decision.
India has suspended the 65-year-old Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan following the heinous terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.
Notably, India on Thursday night formally informed Pakistan about the decision to hold in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty with immediate effect, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam massacre of 26 tourists by Pakistan-linked terrorists.
The letter sent by Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Jal Shakti Ministry to Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Pakistan, said, 'The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir'.
'The resulting security uncertainties have directly impeded India's full utilization of its rights under the Treaty."
Furthermore, apart from other breaches committed by it, Pakistan has refused to respond to India's request to enter into negotiations as envisaged under the Treaty and is thus in breach of the Treaty.
'The Government of India has hereby decided that the Indus Waters Treaty 1960 will be held in abeyance with immediate effect,' the letter reads.

PM Modi conferred with title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' at centenary celebrations of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj
New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday was conferred with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti' at the centenary celebrations of Jain saint Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj. 'On this occasion, you honoured me with the title of 'Dharma Chakravarti'. I do not consider myself suitable for this. But it is our culture that whatever we receive from saints, we accept it as 'prasad'. So, I humbly accept this 'prasad' and dedicate it to Maa Bharati,' PM Modi said during his speech. The centenary celebrations mark the formal commencement of a year-long national tribute to the spiritual leader, being organised by the Union Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Bhagwan Mahaveer Ahimsa Bharti Trust, Delhi. Talking about how today's date is special as Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received his title on this very day in 1987, which represented a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting Jain culture to ideas of restraint and compassion. 'This day is also special because on 28th June 1987, Acharya Vidyanand Muniraj received the title of 'Acharya'. It wasn't just an honour but it was also a 'pavitra dhaara' connecting the Jain culture to ideas, restraint and compassion,' PM Modi said. 'When we are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary today, it reminds us of that historic moment. On this occasion, I bow to the feet of Acharya Shri Munirajji. I pray that his blessings are with us always. People, these centenary celebrations are not just any normal event. It has the memory of a time period and the remembrance of an ascetic life. Today, to make this moment memorable, postal stamps have been made, for this too, I greet the people,' the Prime Minister added. During the celebrations, PM Modi, along with Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, unveiled the commemorative postage stamps in memory of the Acharya. Talking about the history of India, the PM Modi added, 'India is the oldest living culture of the world. We have been immortal for thousands of years because our ideas are immortal, our thoughts are immortal, and our philosophy is immortal. The source of this philosophy is our sages, saints and acharyas' Earlier today, PM Modi, along with the Union Minister Shekhawat, attended an exhibition titled 'Life and Legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj,' which featured paintings and murals depicting the leader's life. The centenary year will be observed from June 28, 2025 to April 22, 2026, with a range of cultural, literary, educational, and spiritual initiatives across the country, aimed at celebrating the life and legacy of Acharya Shri 108 Vidyanand Ji Maharaj, according to an official statement from the ministry of culture. The Acharya was born on April 22, 1925, in Shedbal, Belagavi (Karnataka). He received his initiation at a young age and went on to become one of the most prolific Jain scholars of modern times, having memorised over 8,000 Jain Agamic verses. He has authored over 50 works on Jain philosophy and ethics, including Jain Darshan, Anekantavada, and Mokshamarg Darshan. He travelled barefoot across Indian states for several decades, strictly adhering to Kayotsarga meditation, brahmacharya, and extreme austerity. He was instrumental in the restoration and revival of ancient Jain temples across India, including those in Delhi, Vaishali, Indore, and Shravanabelagola, and was closely associated with the Shravanabelagola Mahamastakabhishek and the 2600th Janm Kalyanak Mahotsav of Lord Mahavira. He identified the site of Kundgram (now Basokund) in Bihar as the birthplace of Bhagwan Mahavir, a finding later recognised by the Government of India in 1956. The centenary year will feature programs across India, focusing on community engagement, youth participation, interfaith dialogue, temple outreach, and Jain heritage awareness, ensuring that the timeless message of Acharya Vidyanand Ji reaches future generations. Who is Parag Jain, upcoming RAW chief and the brain behind Operation Sindoor?
Renowned in intelligence circles as a 'super sleuth,' Parag Jain assumes the top role at RAW with a reputation for skillfully integrating human intelligence (HUMINT) with technical intelligence (TECHINT) read more Parag Jain, a 1989-batch Punjab cadre IPS officer, will take over as R&AW chief from July 1 The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (June 28) appointed Parag Jain, a 1989-batch IPS officer of Punjab cadre, as the next Secretary of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). He will lead India's premier intelligence agency for next two years starting July 1, succeeding incumbent chief Ravi Sinha. Renowned in intelligence circles as a 'super sleuth,' Jain assumes the top role with a reputation for skillfully integrating human intelligence (HUMINT) with technical intelligence (TECHINT), a combination officials credit for the success of numerous high-stakes operations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Played key role in Op Sindoor Among his most notable recent achievements was his leadership in Operation Sindoor , where his intelligence inputs facilitated precise missile strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. While the initial missile hits may have taken few minutes, the intelligence-based groundwork took years to piece together critical information. Parag Jain's extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir, one of India's most complex security regions, is expected to bolster his leadership as India navigates a volatile global security landscape. Experience Senior officials describe Jain as methodical and discreet, with a career marked by key roles. On January 1, 2021, he was promoted to Director General of Police (DGP) in Punjab, though serving on central deputation, he received only notional benefits. Jain played a significant operational role during Punjab's terrorism period, serving in Bhatinda, Mansa, Hoshiarpur, as SSP Chandigarh, and DIG Ludhiana. He also handled Pakistan-related operations for India's external intelligence agency, with tenures in Jammu and Kashmir during the abrogation of Article 370 and Operation Balakote. A low-profile officer, Jain represented India in Canada and Sri Lanka. While posted in Canada, he actively countered the Khalistan ecosystem, repeatedly warning Delhi of its growing threat. Challenges As Parag Jain succeeds Ravi Sinha on Monday, India's external intelligence agency faces calls for a revamp, having been criticised for its handling of the Maldives and Bangladesh crises over the past two years. The inability to foresee the brutal attack in Pahalgam on April 22 further raised significant concerns, especially given the Pakistan Army chief's inflammatory anti-Hindu rhetoric and his assertion that Kashmir is Pakistan's 'jugular vein.' With Asim Munir's elevation to Field Marshal and his prioritisation of cross-border terrorism against India, the role of RAW becomes critical in countering these heightened threats.

Palaniswami is NDA's chief ministerial candidate for 2026 T.N. Assembly polls: G.K. Vasan
Former Union Minister and Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan said on Saturday (June 28, 2025) that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu as well as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a party function in Salem, Mr. Vasan said there were no issues within the NDA and that it remained a 'strong and victorious alliance.' He alleged that the ruling DMK was trying to create confusion within the NDA. Mr. Vasan added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Chennai, had clarified the alliance's position, and BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran had also clarified who the NDA leader in Tamil Nadu is, and who the chief ministerial candidate would be. Responding to a question about Mr. Shah not naming Mr. Palaniswami as the chief ministerial candidate in a recent interview, Mr. Vasan said the Union Minister had announced the alliance with the AIADMK by having Mr. Palaniswami seated next to him. Regarding political parties' demand for a coalition government in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Vasan said that there is discussion about the idea among parties in both the ruling and Opposition alliances, and that there is nothing wrong with it. Responding to a question on whether actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) would be a part of the NDA, Mr. Vasan said that the aim was to unseat the 'anti-people' DMK government. 'So, people who are against the DMK should unite in a single alliance,' he said. Denying allegations that the BJP is weakening regional parties, the TMC president said the party is currently ruling many States across the country, while the Congress is steadily losing its strength. Blaming another party for internal issues is merely an attempt to hide their own failures and fear of electoral defeat, Mr. Vasan added.
