Quinta Brunson says some 'Abbott Elementary' cast members want to pursue other projects: 'Show is very time-consuming'

Yahoo10 hours ago

Abbott Elementary was renewed for an impressive fifth season in January, but Quinta Brunson and some of the cast have started to wonder about life out of school.
"We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans,' Brunson, who created and stars in the show, told Bustle in a new interview. 'That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things.'
She continued, "Right now, I'm receiving scripts, and waiting for that moment that feels like, 'Oh man, this is exactly what I've been looking for.' Abbott has been so successful, and I want to use that success to get other people's projects off the ground."
For example, she told the outlet, "I'm always interested in playing against type. I think that's any actor's dream. Right now my type is 'Janine' and 'teacher.' I'm looking forward to moving away from that a little bit."
The ABC comedy, which debuted in 2021 and was inspired by Brunson's mother's 40 years as a public school teacher, focuses on the staff at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Brunson costars on the Emmy-winning show with a cast that includes Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Janelle James, William Stanford Davis, and Chris Perfetti.
Brunson explained her mantra and approach to being the face of the show to Bustle.
"People used to tell me at the beginning of this that the No. 1 on the call sheet sets the tone, and the producer sets the tone — and I'm both of those roles," she said. "I understand now, after doing this for four years, how important it was that I set the tone that I did when we first started."
"Sometimes it's as simple as I'm the first one in the morning," she added, "and the way I carry myself in the morning can determine how the rest of the set runs, not only as an actor, but as the creator of the show. I try to come in with a good attitude and a positive attitude, and it's not hard to do. I'm very excited to go to work and appreciative of my cast and crew and naturally want the morale up."
A premiere date for season 5 hasn't officially been announced, but the main cast is expected to return. The first four seasons can be streamed now on Hulu.

Charlize Theron Uses 1 Harsh Word To Describe Jeff Bezos And His Wedding Guests

We didn't know the next installment in the 'Mad Max' franchise was Furiosa vs. the Broligarchy. Charlize Theron kicked off her fifth annual block party for her Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project— which advances and invests in the health and safety of young people in Africa — Saturday night with an opening quip that made her opinion of Jeff Bezos and his ilk crystal clear. 'I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding,' Theron told event attendees at the Universal Studios backlot, according to the Hollywood Reporter. 'But that's OK because they suck and we're cool.' After the 'Monster' star used one concise word to describe the Amazon founder and the famous attendees of his opulent Venice, Italy, wedding over the weekend, she moved on to thank her attendees for 'taking the time to be a part of this, especially when the world feels like it's burning because it is.' 'Here in Los Angeles, in the U.S. and across the globe, we're moving backwards fast,' Theron said. 'Immigration policy has destroyed the lives of families, not criminals; women's rights are becoming less and less every day; queer and trans lives are increasingly being erased; and gender-based violence is on the rise. This isn't just policy, it's personal.' THR notes that as the crowd began to appllaud, she added: 'Yeah, fuck them.' Bezos aligned himself with MAGA in January, when he snagged primo seats at President Donald Trump's inauguration alongside the other leaders of the nation's biggest technology companies, including Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, Apple's Tim Cook and Tesla's Elon Musk. Bezos is seemingly so chummy with the Trump family that the president's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, attended the billionaire's wedding, which Forbes estimates may have cost around $25 million. Other attendees joining the star-studded guest list included Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Tom Brady, Orlando Bloom and the Kardashian/Jenner family, who weren't exactly welcomed in the Italian city. Despite Bezos and his now-wife, Lauren Sánchez, promising to donate money to Venetian charities after they tied the knot, local activist groups, including Greenpeace, protested the wedding. Critics accused the couple of exploiting a city already suffering from overtourism, rising housing prices and the threat of flooding due to environmental factors. But, unlike Trump, it doesn't seem like Theron thinks that protestors suck. The 'Tully' star noted in her speech Saturday that she feels that the 'resistance' against the president's policies is a glimmer of 'hope.' 'There is power in all of us standing up, organizing, protesting, voting and caring for each other, and refusing to accept that this is the new normal,' Theron said, per THR. 'That spirit of resistance, justice and care for each other, that's the spirit that drives the work at CTAOP.' 'And although our focus is on the youth in Southern Africa,' Theron added, 'what we're really talking about here tonight is that all lives should be valued.'

Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers reflect on 20 years of Shondaland

Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers aren't just aspirational goals, they're also friendship goals. From "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Murder" to " Bridgerton," the duo have worked together over the past 20 years to tell bold, inclusive stories. To commemorate the milestone, Rhimes and Beers sat down with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts to reflect on the projects they've worked on together, which have left a lasting impact on audiences across the world, specifically their first show, " Grey's Anatomy." "I feel like we made a lot of mistakes," Rhimes said about the series. "Not in a bad -- like, I don't feel any of the mistakes -- were a problem. Whatever came from those mistakes turned out to be fantastic." Beers added, "We were the last show picked up and we were mid-season. What did we have to lose? Because no one was paying any attention." Beers said at the time that "Grey's Anatomy" first premiered in March 2005 on ABC, it was also the year of "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," which she added were "already two big megahits." Despite the apprehension they shared before diving into the series, "Grey's Anatomy" became the longest-running medical drama in American TV history. "For me, that's a really personal feeling to feel like I've made something up and people are embracing it in this way," Rhimes said about how the show has been received by audiences. Rhimes echoed Beers' sentiments about the show and said how "amazed" she is by how people have told her that it's "helped them save somebody in their family's life." "It happens a lot," she said. "I'm also amazed at how many young women can say they were gonna go into the sciences or they're doctors," she added. "It was because of Meredith Grey, which is amazing." Rhimes and Beers teamed up out of a shared frustration toward the television industry. Beers said at the time, they noticed a "gap" in television. "We didn't see anything that looked or acted like us," she said. Rhimes said, "There were no women who felt like real women on television at that point in time." She added, "We were like, 'Where are all the competitive, mean-spirited, fun, well-meaning women out there?" With "Grey's Anatomy" rewriting the rules of primetime, the duo expanded the "Shondaverse" with more shows, including "Scandal," "How to Get Away With Murder," "Station 19," " Bridgerton" and "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." All are led by women protagonists. When it comes to choosing the next story, Rhimes and Beers said that timing matters. "I feel like right now we're tryin' to mine a lot more joy and a lot more enjoyment," Rhimes said. "Because I feel like people want to escape a little bit from the realities of eggs being too high and all kinds of other things." Beers added that whatever the next project is, she knows it will include a lot of "fun."

David Bakhtiari pokes fun at Aaron Rodgers's mystery wedding

David Bakhtiari could be heading to "The Island." Then again, maybe he's already there. On Monday, the former Packers tackle tweeted a video from the recent wedding of current Packers quarterback Jordan Love. Bakhtiari added this: "Just happy at least one of my quarterbacks invited me to their wedding." Advertisement Love and Bakhtiari had limited time together. Bakhtiari started only one game in 2023, Love's first year as a starter and the left tackle's last year in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and Bakhtiari had many years together with the Packers. Making the Bakhtiari remark even more interesting is the general haze of uncertainty surrounding the Rodgers wedding. Up to and including whether a wedding even happened. We know, we know. Rodgers doesn't want anyone to talk about his wedding. When you're one of the most famous players in the NFL, however, you don't get to dictate the terms of the attention you receive. Especially when you show up out of nowhere with a wedding ring. Before showing up without it. Before showing up with it prominently in the photo of you signing a contract with your new team. With Rodgers cloaking so much of his life in mystery, it's impossible to know when, where, or who he married. Or if he even is married. Advertisement Maybe the ring is a Costanza-style sociological experiment aimed at seeing whether women will hit on guys who wear wedding bands. Regardless, Bakhtiari went there. We don't know much, but we know Rodgers won't be happy about it.
