Minister calls for urgent measures to prevent killing of wild animals and cattle in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar dist.
In the wake of the recent deaths of five tigers by poisoning in the Hoogyam range of the M.M. Hills Wildlife Division, and the death of monkeys in the Kandagalu area of Gundlupet range, the Minister held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and Forest officials in Hanur to gather information.
He was updated on the ongoing investigation being conducted by Central and State-level officials on the tiger deaths, and sought details on the current stage of the probe.
The Minister instructed officials to remain extra vigilant in protecting cattle in villages bordering forests, and take steps to prevent wild animals from straying into villages in search of food.
Under the MGNREGA scheme, fodder cultivation should be promoted and ponds constructed in villages near forests to benefit cattle, he said, emphasising that there should be no shortage of fodder or water for local livestock.
Patrolling in forest areas and adjoining villages must be intensified, including special night patrols, he directed. Deploying watchers and other forest staff under proper supervision will help prevent wildlife attacks, he advised.
'When wild animals attack cattle, forest officials must build confidence among farmers and villagers by consoling them and should respond immediately,' the Minister suggested.
The Minister stressed that it is the responsibility of the Forest Department to ensure timely payment of salaries to outsourced staff in the M.M. Wildlife Division. 'This issue should be brought to the notice of higher authorities without any delay and resolved at the earliest,' he instructed.
The Minister assured that steps would be taken to get necessary grants sanctioned to provide protection and basic facilities for wildlife, people, and livestock in forest fringe areas.
MLA M.R. Manjunath, CADA Chairman P. Mariswamy, former MLA R. Narendra, Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag, and other officials were present.

Showcause notices over inaction on tree felling
New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued showcause notices to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Forest Department for failing to act on the illegal cutting of a fully-grown tree in a public park in DDA Market No. 3 in Y-Block, Mangolpuri, northwest Delhi. The notices were issued after a local resident filed a plea seeking enforcement of the tribunal's earlier order from March 4, 2024. The tribunal earlier directed the tree officer and DPCC to act and submit reports. However, as no compliance was made, the NGT has now issued notices and directed the applicant to serve notice and file an affidavit of service, which involves submitting a report on the ground situation. In the latest order dated July 1, the tribunal, led by chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, stated: "The applicant is seeking action on our earlier directions regarding the illegal felling of a tree in Mangolpuri by the Horticulture Department of MCD." If required, the matter would be brought back before the bench," the tribunal had earlier stated. However, the applicant's counsel told the bench that no action has been taken so far. Acknowledging this, the tribunal said: "As no steps have been taken by the Forest Department, we are now issuing a notice to them. The applicant must serve the notice and file proof of service before the next hearing." The NGT has now asked for an affidavit from the applicant detailing the current condition at the site.

Injured elephant dies after suspected Maoist IED blast in Jharkhand's Saranda forest
RANCHI: A six-year-old wild elephant named 'Gadru', which was seriously injured in a suspected IED blast planted by Maoists in the Saranda Forest of Chaibasa, has sadly succumbed to its injuries despite intensive treatment efforts. The elephant had been spotted wandering in the forest in an injured condition ten days ago. Gadru was believed to have sustained injuries on June 24, but it was only located on June 27 with the help of a drone camera. Despite exhaustive efforts by the Forest Department and veterinary experts, the elephant could not be saved. 'After several hours of treatment, the elephant finally collapsed late on Saturday evening due to excessive blood loss and infection. It had sustained a major injury to its hind limb, which became severely infected and spread throughout its body,' said Saranda Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Aviroop Sinha. He added that further details would be available following the post-mortem, scheduled for Sunday.

Historic Anegundi monuments under threat due to official apathy
Gangavati: Ancient forts, temples and heritage structures dating back to the pre-Vijayanagar and Vijayanagar eras in Anegundi are facing severe damage due to the negligence of the Archaeology Department, local residents have alleged. Anegundi, historically recorded as the original capital of the Vijayanagar Empire before the seat was shifted to Hampi, still houses many remnants of its glorious past. Numerous temples, gateways, mantapas and fort walls stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history — but today they are crumbling due to lack of conservation. One alarming incident has come to light at the Agasi fort gate of Chikkarampura, one of the four historic gateways of Anegundi. Local reports say that mantapas atop the fort have been demolished by encroachers who have illegally built houses inside this protected area. Ironically, this land falls under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department and no legal titles have been issued here, yet illegal construction continues unchecked. Similarly, private individuals are reportedly destroying parts of the ancient Anegundi fort ruins on the left side of the main road connecting Anegundi to Anjanadri and Talwara Ghat, to carry out unauthorized civil works. The Anegundi region and 18 surrounding villages come under the Hampi World Heritage Area Development Authority. As this area is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, any construction activity here requires mandatory permission from the authority. However, locals say unauthorized work goes on blatantly while officials look the other way. 'It is unfortunate that the few remaining monuments are also being destroyed. The authorities must wake up and take urgent steps to protect what is left,' demanded local youth leader Devendra R.B. Reacting to the allegations, Shejeshwar, Assistant Director, State Archaeology Museum and Heritage Department, Kamalapur division, said: 'We were not aware of this issue. I will immediately send a team for inspection and personally visit the site within two days.'
