Glamorous socialite sued over Porsche crash that left elderly woman with a 'traumatic brain injury'
A glamorous socialite rammed into a senior citizen with her Porsche, leaving the woman with a traumatic brain injury, according to the alleged victim's lawsuit.
Vanessa Getty, who married into the oil-rich Getty family, struck 66-year-old Mary Riley's parked vehicle on March 28, 2024, according to Riley's lawsuit.
The socialite, 53, allegedly lost control of her $100,000 Porsche Taycan while looking for her glasses.
Riley had just got back into her 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK 550 and had not even had time to shut the car door before Getty smashed into her, the suit claimed.
'Suddenly and without warning a vehicle driven by Defendant Vanessa Louise Getty violently crashed into Plaintiff's parked vehicle,' the complaint filed on June 18 states.
As a result of the incident Riley suffered, 'orthopedic injuries and a traumatic brain injury,' the suit said.
Riley's lawyer, Quinton Cutlip, told Daily Mail that Getty told responding officers that, 'she had been distracted because she was looking for her glasses' when the crash happened.
'Ms. Getty was negligent and was apologetic at the scene. Ms. Riley was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She continues to receive treatment and care for injuries she suffered in the collision,' Cutlip said.
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that one person was taken to the hospital after the 4:42pm crash at the intersection of Divisadero and Lombard Streets. Both vehicles were towed from the area of the collision.
Riley's lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for her injuries, according documents filed with the court.
'This will all work itself out through the civil litigation process and trial, if necessary,' Cutlip said.
Getty is married to Billy Getty, who is the son of composer and oil heir Gordon Getty.
The Getty family was once the richest in the world and draws its wealth from the eponymous oil marketing company founded by Jean Paul Getty.
The company went bankrupt in 2012, but Forbes estimated that the family was still worth $5.4 billion back in 2015.
Getty, born Vanessa Jarman, is the daughter of actor Claude Jarman Jr. and ballerina Maryann Opperman.
She graduated from UCLA and married into the Getty family in 1999. She and her husband have three children.
For decades, Getty has been a fixture at exclusive events such as Vanity Fair's Oscar Party and various charity events.
She's also known for her philanthropic work, as she helped develop the Peninsula Humane Society and founded San Francisco Bay Humane Friends, both nonprofits that seek to help displaced animals.
She has supported Democratic candidates, most recently Vice President Kamala Harris, who happens to be the godmother to one of Getty's children.
Getty appeared alongside other members of the esteemed family at the nuptials of Getty heir Ivy Love Getty to her now-ex-husband Tobias Engel.
The November 2021 wedding was a lavish affair that began at San Francisco City Hall, where then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was invited to officiate the ceremony for the young couple.
Royals rubbed shoulders with celebrities with Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark, transgender model and activist Nats Getty, actress Anya Taylor-Joy, designer Wes Gordon, fashion editor Hamish Bowles among the esteemed guests.
The ceremony was followed by a wild reception at the gorgeous family home in Pacific Heights, where guests partied until 1am.

Norris produces perfect response to Piastri crash as Verstappen pole streak ends
Lando Norris produced the perfect response to his galling crash late in the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks ago by dominating qualifying in Austria. He secured a comfortable pole position in Spielberg while Max Verstappen had his attempt scuppered by a late yellow flag which ruined his final flying lap. McLaren were the pace-setters throughout practice but Verstappen was always close behind on a track he loves. He came into this qualifying session on the back of five pole positions in a row at the Red Bull Ring, a run stretching back to the 2021 season. But it would come to an end as a Pierre Gasly spin as the final runs of qualifying began ruined the laps of those behind him. Verstappen was one of those unfortunate drivers powerless to improve and so he was only seventh quickest. Norris was more than half-a-second clear of Charles Leclerc in second place, comfortably the largest pole margin of the season so far – on the track with the shortest lap time in F1. And he will like that the Ferrari will start between him and title rival Oscar Piastri who had to settle for third on the grid ahead of Lewis Hamilton. George Russell came into qualifying on the back of pole and victory last time out in Montreal, but was staring down the barrel of a potential Q1 exit until his final lap with which he managed to leap out of the bottom five. But he was only 11th fastest with team-mate Kimi Antonelli 10th, sparking worries down at Mercedes that Q3 might have been beyond them. Even though Russell made it through, there were still some eye-catching eliminations. In the bottom five was Yuki Tsunoda, a Red Bull suffering a nightmare Q1 exit at their home race, while Carlos Sainz failed to make it into the top 15 for the third qualifying session in a row as his struggle to find one-lap pace in his Williams continues. Nico Hulkenberg was at the very bottom of the timesheet, unable to extract the performance from his Sauber that rookie team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto found to go eighth quickest in that first part of the session. Esteban Ocon and Lance Stroll were the others who failed to make it into Q2. Alex Albon was the only man left flying the flag for Williams but he too couldn't make the top 10, suffering a Q2 exit alongside Fernando Alonso who was 11th and that too was the end of Aston Martin's participation. Isack Hadjar had shown the pace for another top 10 appearance but couldn't put the lap together and Franco Colapinto and Oliver Bearman were the others in the bottom five. Bortoleto continued his fine display by going fifth quickest in Q2 to reach the top 10 for the first time in his short F1 career to date. And Liam Lawson also did well to get there to ensure that, across their two teams, Red Bull did have at least a couple of affiliated drivers representing them in the final part of qualifying. Antonelli was only 10th quickest but it was enough to squeeze both Mercedes cars into Q3 to allay what Toto Wolff might have feared would happen in that second part of the session. But the first of their two runs in that final part of qualifying made it clear that neither Russell nor Antonelli had the pace to challenge for pole. Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192. As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+. In the end, no-one could match what Norris was able to produce. Verstappen and Piastri might have fancied their chances but never got the opportunity to give it a go as Gasly's spin at the final corner brought out the yellow flags which disabled DRS in that sector and meant they were never going to match Norris' pace on their final runs.

Halfords lets shoppers book their free air con check on its website via You enter your postcode and vehicle registration and it tells you the nearest branch you can get it done. However, you may be charged based on where you live and the type of vehicle. Advertisement The retailer hasn't said if the free appointments are available all the time, but we checked based on a North-East London location and there were slots until as far away as July 6. Halfords says if the check reveals you need to top up your car air conditioning unit's gas or refrigerant levels, you can buy the products to do this yourself in its stores. However, the RAC says this is usually a job for the specialists. You can also book in for an air con recharge service at Halfords from £65. Advertisement Checkatrade says having this service done normally costs between £65 and £130, so Halfords is at the cheaper end of the scale. Urgent warning over easy nighttime driving mistake that could see you fined £5,000 - but the fix is free You can find out more via However, the cost of getting your air con unit recharged at Kwik Fit is £72.95 or more - more expensive than Halfords. Advertisement Hot weather car mistakes that can cost you £1,000s Driving in the wrong footwear Swapping trainers for flip flops while driving during bouts of hot weather might seem practical, but it can land you with a big fine. Any shoes which could limit your ability to put pressure on the pedals breaks the Highway Code. If you are found to be 'driving without due care and attention', you face a £100 fine and three points added to your licence. If the matter escalates to court, you could face fines of up to £5,000. Advertisement Drinking water while driving If you get distracted and are not considered to be in proper control of your car while drinking water, you could face a fine. If you're involved in an accident as a result of a lapse in concentration, it could see you slapped with a £2,500 bill. The same rules apply to eating behind the wheel, so think again if you're considering diving into an ice cream while driving. Keeping your windows closed and A/C off Advertisement It might be tempting to save some pennies by closing windows and keeping the AC off during hotter weather. But this can breach Highway Code rule 237, which states that a car must be kept 'well ventilated' in hot weather to reduce drowsiness. Not doing this and being caught could result in a £5,000 fine. How to save money on summer essentials SUNNIER days and warmer weather will leave many of us wanting to kit out gardens and outdoor areas. Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to get a great deal on summer essentials… It pays to know how to bag big savings on the likes of hot tubs paddling pools, egg chairs and outside bars. Many retailers have flash sales across entire ranges – often this ties into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends. Sign up to the mailing lists of your favourite brands and you'll be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too. Keep a close eye on the specialbuys at Aldi and middle of Lidl drops which drop a couple of times a week and usually mean great value seasonal items such as beach gear and paddling pools. If you are not in a hurry to buy an item, try adding it to the shopping cart and leaving it for a couple of days. Sometimes big brands will try to tempt you into the sale by offering you a discount. Always check if you can get cashback before paying. It's especially worth using sites such as Topcashback, Quidco and app Jamdoughnut when buying bigger ticket items such as garden furniture as you'll get a nice kickback.
