UPSI crash site slated for RM55m highway upgrade
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that since 2023, various initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the Gerik-Jeli route, particularly along the FT04 federal road.
He noted that in June 2023, an allocation of RM30 million was approved for the reconstruction of sections of the JRTB. Two months later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM30 million to further upgrade the route.
'This allocation has been utilised to upgrade and maintain several critical sections of FT04,' he said, in a Facebook post.
He added that ongoing works include road resurfacing, and the repair of facilities, bridges, street lights, and traffic lights along both directions of the route.
Nanta said that all upgrading works on FT04 were completed in phases between July and August 2023, with a total cost of RM55.73 million, based on road damage assessments conducted through the pavement condition assessment (PCA).
He added that, in 2024, RM7.2 million had been allocated for various repair works at several other sections of the route.
Nanta said that, while the police investigation into the tragic accident early yesterday morning is still ongoing, he has received various reactions regarding the road conditions, which have gone viral on social media.
'As I have emphasised before, the ministry remains fully committed to ensuring that road infrastructure is safe and comfortable for all users.
'At the same time, I must stress that road safety is a shared responsibility, including that of road users themselves,' he said.
Yesterday's tragic incident involved a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned following a collision at KM53 of JRTB, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claiming the lives of 15 students.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

Teens among victims rescued in police raids on scam gang, nine arrested
JOHOR BARU: A pair of teenagers were among three persons, believed to be victims of a scam syndicate's forced labour and sexual exploitation, rescued in a series of raids here. Johor police chief Comm Datuk M. Kumar said nine syndicate members comprising seven women and two men aged between 17 and 50 were arrested during Ops Bugil, which was carried out in Kulai and Johor Baru between June 20 and July 1. 'The syndicate has been active since Nov 2024, operating scams by creating fake social media accounts and impersonating attractive women to lure victims into performing sexual acts over video calls. 'At the same time, they would send phishing links to hack victims' mobile phones, then use the explicit recordings to blackmail them, demanding money in stages,' he said at a press conference at the Johor police headquarters on Monday (July 14). He added that victims, gripped by fear and emotional distress, would comply with the syndicate's demands by transferring money into bank accounts provided by the group. 'The syndicate also recruited underage local workers to work as scammers, offering them monthly salaries between RM2,200 and RM4,000. 'At the initial stage, the victims were trained and assigned to carry out scams locally. Once they became more skilled, they were offered jobs abroad with higher pay around USD2,500 (RM10,637),' he said. The victims, aged between 15 and 26, were recruited to conduct online sex scams using fake social media accounts to extort money from unsuspecting individuals. 'They were forced to work 12 hours a day, allowed only one day off every two weeks and required to sleep at the workplace. They were not permitted to leave except on designated days off. 'Their identification cards and mobile phones were confiscated. 'Those who refused to work were physically abused, including being beaten, forced to eat chilli and sexually assaulted. These acts were recorded and used to further blackmail the victims,' he said. He stressed the victims were also threatened with a RM30,000 penalty if they attempted to quit and were warned against filing police reports. 'Various items were seized, including 27 mobile phones, personal identification documents, flight tickets, money exchange receipts and mixed currencies totalling RM140 along with 1,822 Yuan and 4,370 Baht in cash. 'Also confiscated were a laptop, 49 SIM cards, a Wi-Fi modem, job-related notebooks and a car with its remote control,' he said. He added that seven out of the nine suspects will be charged at the Johor Baru Magistrate's Court, Sessions Court, and the Kulai Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (July 15). He urged the public not to be easily lured by high-paying job offers, especially those circulated on social media and to always verify the background of any company before accepting such opportunities. 'The public is also advised not to fall for attractive female profiles on social media, as syndicates use fake accounts to send phishing links that steal data from mobile phones before extorting the victims. 'We remain fully committed and will not compromise with any party involved in such crimes, as they threaten national security and public order,' he added. MOHE to continue monitoring Malaysian students in Iran, says Zambry
JELI: The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) will continue to monitor the five Malaysian students in Iran who have chosen to remain there to pursue their studies, said Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir. "The government has offered support and expressed its willingness to help them return if they choose to. "We will continue to monitor their situation closely, wherever they are, to ensure their safety," he told reporters after launching the Jeli Umno division delegates' meeting at Bukit Nangka today. Previously, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed that only five Malaysians remain in Iran by personal choice. All five had signed letters of undertaking to stay in the country, despite the government's earlier advisory urging Malaysians to leave amid escalating tensions. On June 23, a total of 24 people arrived safely at Kuala Lumpur International Airport from Iran on Malaysia Airlines flight MH781. A month after deadly crash, surviving UPSI students resume studies, but only three in campus
JELI, July 12 — All Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who survived last month's fatal bus crash in Gerik have since resumed classes, though the majority are doing so online. Only three students are attending classes at the main Tanjung Malim, Perak campus, Bernama reported Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir saying today. 'Several others are still undergoing treatment but are continuing their studies online. None of the injured students have deferred their studies,' he was quoted telling reporters after officiating the Jeli Umno division delegates meeting here. Zambry also confirmed that all the injured students have been discharged from hospital. 'The last injured student was discharged on July 8 from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu. Three have since resumed their studies on campus, while the rest are attending classes online,' he was quoted as saying. The crash involved a chartered bus ferrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza along the Gerik-Jeli route in the early hours of the morning on June 9. The students were returning from Jertih in Terengganu to their Perak campus after the Aidiladha holidays. Fifteen students were killed while another 33 people sustained injuries, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the Perodua Alza's driver and three passengers.
