Two-time Open king pulls out of Royal Portrush showpiece
Two-time winner Ernie Els has pulled out of The Open.
The South African star will not tee up at Royal Portrush after his withdrawal was relayed by R&A chiefs.
Els' place in the 153rd Championship will now be taken by South Korean star Si Woo Kim.
The 55-year-old grabbed his first Claret Jug in 2002 at Muirfield and followed it up a decade later with success at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
However, Els, who is currently competing in the Dick's Sporting Goods Championship on the Seniors Tour, will not be taking his spot in Northern Ireland.
Kim is the recipient of the place and now join the world's elite for the showpiece at Portrush this week.
Amongst the former Champions who will be competing is Darren Clarke, the local hero who collected the trophy the before Els at Royal St George's.
Clarke's countryman Rory McIlroy is one of the hot favourites for the crown and former Ryder Cup skipper Paul McGinley believes he's good to go on home soil.
He said: 'There's always next level for Rory. What can be more motivating than playing an Open Championship a few miles up the road from where you are brought up on a golf course you are very familiar with in front of your home crowd?
"He'll certainly be energised around that. He will have huge support behind him and it looks like there are a couple of green shoots in terms of his form.
"In my view he's a better player now than he has been at any time in his career. He has more variety of shots
'One of the things he has added to his armoury is what Tiger [Woods] called the stinger shot. He's very good at that now.
"He hits the ball 35 feet off the ground when he plays it where his normal height is about 120 feet. It gives him a safety shot that he wouldn't have had last time he played the Open at Portrush.
'He's a much better wedge player now as well and there's going to be a lot of holes for him at Portrush where he will have a wedge in his hands.
'The third part of it is his putting. He is putting more consistently now than I've ever seen him in his career. Brad Foxon (putting coach) has been a hugely important addition to his team. He looks like he is going to hole the putt now.
"It's not wishy-washy. When the ball leaves the putter head it looks like it has got a place to go. All in all I think he's in a better place to put up a really good show.'

Bob MacIntyre 'has the balls' to win The Open as Kiwi pal insists Scottish star is in the world class category
Kiwi star Fox believes the Scot can take home the Claret Jug next weekend Ryan Fox is adamant pal Bob MacIntyre has the balls to win The Open. The Scottish star heads to Royal Portrush aiming to burst into the elite Major club. MacIntyre almost made the jump last month when runner-up at the US Open and has now set his sights on going one better at the 153rd Championship. Fox, who played alongside the Oban hero at Oakmont and also when he made the PGA Tour win breakthrough in Canada, was again at his side during the final round of the Genesis Scottish Open. The Kiwi reckons MacIntyre's exploits helped him in following suit of grabbing two PGA Tour wins this term and believes the Tartan star has shown he's got both the game and the bottle to get his talented hands around the Claret Jug. Fox said: 'There's no flaws in this game. I saw that on the Saturday US Open. He played fantastic. Obviously he played great on the Sunday and JJ [Spaun] did something incredible to beat him. 'If you're Bob sitting in the clubhouse with two to play and you're tied for the lead, you'd probably think in worst case: I'm in a play-off here. Fair play to him, he was a great sport about it seeing JJ finish birdie, birdie and what else can you do? 'He did everything, he can control well and the other thing that Bob is very, very good at is, when he gets in the mix, he hits all the shots that you need to hit. He's proven that over here, in the US, in the Ryder Cup and you can't really teach that trait. 'You've got that deep down inside you that, when the pressure comes on, you actually stand up and 'balls-up' for want of a better term. And Bob is really really good at that. "He does everything really well without anything sort of jumping out at you going: He's phenomenal at this. But when you actually break it down he drives it really good, he gets really good on shots, his short game's really solid, he holes a lot of putts. 'You put that together you've got a world-class golfer. I don't want to speak for Bob, it's almost but when you live it a little bit, it's easier to believe it and I think winning in Canada last year, winning here, playing on the Ryder Cup, he's living it. 'I think it just gave him that confidence of I am one of the best players in the world. He always kind of had it, but I feel the same way. Some people can talk themselves into it. Obviously that six, eight week period I just had, I mean it was life-changing basically. Unbelievable. 'Winning once on the PGA Tour was a dream come true. Doing it twice still feels like a dream to be honest and it looked great to follow in Bob's footsteps. 'Seeing him do what he did last year I think kind of proved to all the guys out here that our guys can compete over there. Matt Pavon earlier that year as well. It was nice to copy those guys this year.' Fox is building his own bid for The Open and said: 'I was in Portrush trying to play a practise round, although the weather was not very kind to us. If we have a couple of days like that for the Open, I think it might rival Carnoustie if it's like that again. 'But it was good to be back. A fantastic golf course, fantastic part of the world and it's great to play a couple of weeks of links. I think we all want some wind to make it interesting, but two weeks of sunshine and no rain and some warm temperatures will be pretty nice.'

The Open: Warning issued to fans heading to Portrush amid significant weather change
The caution comes after warm and sunny weather over the weekend, which saw temperatures soar to 30C in Magilligan, Co Londonderry on Sunday. Showers are predicted for the majority of the week ahead, which coincides with the tournament in Royal Portrush. Tuesday, the third day of practice at the Open, will see cloudy skies with some showers and predictions of thundery conditions. The Open at Royal Portrush: What happened in 2019? However, there will be a return to some sunny spells with highs of 21C later in the day. Wednesday will see dry and sunny spells with highs of 22C. The first day of competition on Thursday will see a return to the showers, as temperatures will reach a maximum of 22C with some cloud cover. Scattered showers are in store for Friday with some bright spells and highs of 21C predicted. Practice got underway at the tournament earlier today as star attraction Rory McIlroy was first on the course, before thousands of golfing fans begin flocking to the seaside town. With a large number of fans heading to Portrush to watch the practice and competition hoping to get a glimpse of the likes of McIlroy and Shane Lowry, police have warned travellers to take extra care. Visitors have also been urged to avail of public transport for the event, with a Translink strategy having been put in place for those making the journey. 'We are advising road users to be mindful of the change in weather this morning here in Portrush, with more rain on the forecast,' said a spokesperson. 'If you are travelling to The Open today, please take extra care on the roads, as road surfaces are very slippery due to excess water. 'Reduce your speed and give more vulnerable road users such as cyclists and motorcyclists more room than usual, and don't take any risks when overtaking. 'Please also be reminded of the transport options available to you via our partners at Translink, with bus and rail options running again today. 'Remember to take your time and exercise caution. We want everyone to arrive here safely to enjoy their day.' Meanwhile, officers also reminded the public of an air exclusion zone over Royal Portrush this week for The Open. The restrictions will be in place from 4.30am to 9pm every day until July 21. The exclusion zone will restrict the use of drones and aircraft flying below 1,400 above sea level from entering the area above the course. These restrictions do not apply to police air support units, emergency medical services or those from the maritime and coastguard agency. 'These restrictions, which also cover the use of drones, are necessary to ensure public safety throughout the event,' a police spokesperson said. 'We have already made contact with clubs, associations and societies that we are aware of, who would regularly utilise airspace to ensure they abide by these restrictions. 'It's also worth noting, if you are detected breaching this order and end up with a criminal record, your travel and career prospects will be negatively affected.'
