Marcos frustrated with SHS curriculum: Wala namang advantage

GMA Network18-06-2025
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has expressed frustration over the Senior High School Curriculum, noting that the system has "no advantage."
In an episode of the BBM Podcast, Marcos was asked about the call of Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada to rationalize the basic education system in the country by removing the senior high school under the K to 12 program.
'It's just expressing the same frustration that I expressed in the first place. It's costing more for the parents kasi nadagdagan ng two years pa... Sa ten years, wala namang advantage, wala namang naging advantage, hindi naman nakukuha sa trabaho eh. That's his frustration, that's also my frustration,'' Marcos said.
(It's costing more for the parents because there's an additional two years. In ten years, there's no advantage. They are not hired. That's his frustration, that's also my frustration.)
'So we'll see what the Congress will do. But while the law is still K to 12, basta't ang sinabi ko kay Sec. Sonny Angara, pagandahin natin nang husto habang nandiyan pa 'yan (let's improve it until it's still there),'' he added.
In August 2024, Marcos directed the rationalization of the SHS Curriculum as he wanted to ensure that SHS graduates could acquire high-quality jobs.
Meanwhile, in filing Senate Bill No. 3001, Estrada said that the SHS 'still has not fully achieved its goal' to produce skilled and job-ready graduates 12 years after the enactment of Republic Act No. 10533, also known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013.
Under the proposed measure, Estrada seeks to retain the fundamental principles of RA 10533, sans the SHS level in a bid 'to simplify the high school system while still making sure students get quality education that meets global standards.'
He recommended a one-year kindergarten education, followed by six years of elementary education, and four years of secondary education.
The revised SHS curriculum, which underwent extensive review and consultation from education stakeholders, will also be piloted in School Year 2025-2026. There are 841 schools set to participate in the pilot run.
One of the key features of the new curriculum is the reduction of core subjects from the 15 being offered per semester to just five that will be offered for a full year in Grade 11. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Philippine flag at Batasan gets a cleaning before SONA 2025

The giant flag in the session hall of the House of Representatives has been washed, ironed and re-hung ahead of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s State of the Nation Address (SONA). The flag—measuring 12 meters long and six meters wide—was taken down three days ago to be spot-cleaned, then washed in an industrial washing machine for 20 minutes by a cleaning firm that won the contract through a bidding process. After being washed, the flag was dried and ironed before being delivered to the Batasang Pambansa Complex in Quezon City on Thursday. Workers ironed the flag again before it was attached to a wooden pole operated by a machine and hoisted back up to loom over the session hall, where Marcos will deliver the SONA—the fourth in his presidency—on July 28.

Marcos backs proposed Blue Economy Act

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. will support the Blue Economy Act, which aims to help protect the country's coastal and marine ecosystems and resources, according to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro on Thursday. 'Sa lahat po ng ikagaganda ng ating environment, sa ating ikaaangat po ng taumbayan, mga mangingisda po, hindi po ito tututulan ng Pangulo,' Castro said in a press briefing when asked about the proposed measure. (The President will not oppose any measure that will improve our environment and will develop the welfare of the public, including the fisherfolk.) The Presidential Communications Office said that Senators Loren Legarda and Risa Hontiveros refiled the measure as they sought to promote stewardship and sustainable development of coastal and marine ecosystems and resources. In August 2024, the Senate approved on third and final reading Senate Bill No. 2450 or 'An Act establishing a framework for Blue Economy. The bill was approved by the House of Representatives on its third and final reading during the 19th Congress, but the Congress failed to ratify a reconciled version of the measure. The proposed measure commits the Philippines to harnessing its vast ocean resources for jobs, growth, and long-term marine protection. It further aligns the country with global efforts to safeguard and sustainably use the seas. If passed into law, this measure will adopt a blue economy framework, making marine wealth a pillar of the national economy and patrimony. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Ortega asks OVP to back claims on 'savings' if SC decides vs. impeachment

La Union Rep. Paolo Ortega V on Thursday dared the Office of Vice President (OVP) Sara Duterte to back up its claim that millions will be saved if her impeachment trial does not push through. "Kailangan niya ng cost-benefit analysis," Ortega said. (She needs a cost-benefit analysis for that.) "She can't throw around statements like that. Aralin muna nila maigi. Siguro hindi naman aabot sa P612.5 million ang gastos sa impeachment," Ortega said. (She should study it well first. I don't think impeachment expenses will cost P612.5 million.) Ortega was responding to the comments made by OVP spokesperson Ruth Castelo, who said that "we'll save millions and millions of money on the trial that is technically defective." Ortega, however, questioned her claim. "At this point, that's premature [for them to say]. Saan galing iyong matitipid? Saan galing iyong hugot niya?" Ortega asked. "Baka sa next press conference mag-present na sila ng matrix because what gets measured gets done. You don't throw such pronouncements around just for soundbyte," Ortega added. (Where will the savings come from? She should present a matrix in her next press conference.) "Right track" In the same press conference, Ortega also responded to the comments made by Senator Joel Villanueva, who said that he is hopeful that the Supreme Court will resolve the petitions questioning the legality of the impeachment soon so the Senate will know if it is on the "right track." "Regardless of what the Supreme Court needs from the House and the Senate, those can be complied with. There is no problem with that. Pero klarong-klaro naman po ang ating Saligang Batas. The impeachment court is an entity on its own," Ortega said. "The Supreme Court has to resolve these legal questions brought to them, but holding the impeachment trial is a leadership call. Besides, the Senate impeachment court already constituted itself," Ortega added. "The Senate will try and must try [the impeachment case], no matter what," Ortega emphasized. The impeachment case put forward by the House accuses Duterte of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes mainly due to alleged misuse of P612.5 million worth of confidential funds and for threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., his wife Liza and his Speaker Martin Romualdez of Leyte, among others. Castelo has said that Duterte is "ready" if the impeachment will proceed. 'The Vice President is ready, she's been saying that. And she's eager to be able to present her case or her evidence in the impeachment court so that once and for all, all doubts cast on her will go away. And that's what she wants,' Castelo said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
