Elizabeth Olsen Faces the Ultimate Romantic Dilemma in A24's Eternity
This morning, the acclaimed indie studio debuted the first official trailer for Eternity, a high-concept romantic comedy set in the great beyond, starring Elizabeth Olsen (His Three Daughters), Miles Teller (The Gorge), and Callum Turner (Masters of the Air). The film, directed by Dating Amber's David Freyne, will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September before hitting theaters in November, and it's already shaping up to be one of A24's most buzzed-about releases this year.
A Love Triangle That Transcends Death
The premise? Simple in theory. Chaotic in execution.
In Eternity, when people die, they aren't immediately whisked away to Heaven or Hell. Instead, they're given one week, seven ethereal days, to decide where, and more importantly with whom, they want to spend forever. And for Joan (Olsen), death is only the beginning of her problems.
Freshly deceased, she finds herself reuniting with her recently dead husband Larry (Teller), the man she built a life with. But the cosmic curveball comes in the form of Luke (Turner), her long-lost first love who died tragically young and has spent decades in the afterlife waiting for her. Joan now faces the impossible: choose the comfortable love she knew or the soul she never got the chance to grow old with.
'A lot has happened in a week,' Joan sighs in the trailer. 'You died. I died. I've just been reunited with both of my dead husbands, and I have to pick where to spend eternity.'
The trailer wastes no time diving into the romantic tug-of-war, teasing everything from heaven-adjacent group therapy sessions to surreal bureaucratic afterlife limbo, complete with clipboards and snarky guides. It's 'The Good Place meets The Notebook' with a twist of existential chaos.
A Dream Team Behind and In Front of the Camera
Eternity boasts a powerhouse team both on screen and behind the scenes.
Elizabeth Olsen leads the cast with the charm and vulnerability she's become synonymous with, bringing unexpected warmth and comedic timing to a character teetering between heartbreak and hope. In a recent interview with Extra, Olsen hinted at the film's old-school rom-com roots: 'It's real fun. It's a callback to Billy Wilder films. I think it's gonna be a special romantic comedy that we're all really proud of.'
Miles Teller, fresh off Top Gun: Maverick and Apple TV+'s The Gorge, brings his signature swagger and depth as Larry, the solid husband Joan built her life with. Meanwhile, Callum Turner delivers as the hauntingly tender Luke, whose wartime death robbed both of them of a future. Rounding out the ensemble are John Early, In the Heights' Olga Merediz, and Oscar-winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers), who's fast becoming the comedic scene-stealer of the moment.
Behind the camera, director David Freyne is no stranger to heartfelt stories in unlikely circumstances. After his acclaimed 2020 LGBTQ+ rom-com Dating Amber, Freyne returns to the genre with an otherworldly twist. He also co-wrote the film with Pat Cunnane, a former Designated Survivor writer, whose original script appeared on the 2022 Black List, Hollywood's annual roll call of the best unproduced screenplays.
Producers Tim White and Trevor White, best known for Oscar-nominated titles like King Richard, are on board under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner. And with A24's Midas touch, Eternity has all the ingredients of a festival darling and awards-season sleeper.
A24's Hot Streak Continues
A24 is having a year, and Eternity is the latest jewel in its halo.
The studio's romantic gamble follows the success of Materialists, Celine Song's follow-up to Past Lives, which also featured a steamy love triangle, that one between Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. That film grossed over $52 million globally, setting a high bar for indie rom-coms and proving audiences still crave sharp, character-driven love stories with soul.
And A24 isn't slowing down. Up next is Architecton (August 1), Viktor Kossakovsky's documentary on Berlin architecture. Then comes Highest 2 Lowest from Spike Lee starring Denzel Washington and Ne Zha 2 (August 22). October brings The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, directed by Benny Safdie, followed by Marty Supremestarring Timothée Chalamet on Christmas Day.
With Eternity, A24 is clearly betting that a story about love beyond death will resonate just as deeply as Song's meditation on fate and timing.
TIFF, Then Eternity
Eternity is set to have its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, which runs from September 4 through 14. Early buzz suggests it could be one of the event's emotional high points, especially as Olsen's performance is poised to anchor one of the most complex, genre-blending romantic narratives in recent memory.
Can love that never had the chance to grow compete with a love that weathered decades of reality? Can two wildly different kinds of romance both be right? And if you had to choose just one person to spend eternity with, how would you know?
Those are the questions Eternity is asking, and if A24's track record holds, it won't be giving us easy answers.
Eternity opens in theaters this November. Watch the full trailer below.

Elizabeth Olsen Rom Com Reactions, Avatar Fire And Ash Trailer
This week in Screen Time, I hype up how funny and great Bad Bunny was in Happy Gilmore 2. I also share what's all over my FYP — like a rom-com with Elizabeth Olsen and the third Avatar movie dropping amazing trailers — and what we've got going on over on BuzzFeed Celeb's YouTube channel, plus so much more. Listen, I even find time to share the classic Hollywood movies I think everyone should watch. Thanks for joining me! Happy Gilmore 2 — watch for: Bad Bunny and about 1,000 other cameos Streaming on Netflix I actually hadn't seen Happy Gilmore before this week. I know. I know. It was a big hole in my movie knowledge. So, I watched it, and then I dove right into Happy Gilmore 2. While I still like the original more, this was a very solid Adam Sandler movie, and what made it so great was how jam-packed it was with cameos. From real golf pros, like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, to actors and other famous figures, like Benny Safdie, Margaret Qualley, Steve Buscemi, Eminem, Travis Kelce, Post Malone, and more. It's really a who's who of who you can spot in this movie. While Sandler, Christopher McDonald, and Julie Bowen slip back into their roles of Happy, Shooter McGavin, and Virginia perfectly, it's actually Bad Bunny who stole this movie for me. He plays Happy's new caddy, Oscar, and he's so effortlessly funny. He fits into this movie so well, especially alongside Marcello Hernández as Oscar's cousin. Overall, it's a very fun movie that's worth watching. Adolescence — watch for: The most chilling debut performance from Owen Cooper Streaming on Netflix Leading into this year's Emmy Awards in September, I figured I would spotlight the Emmy-nominated shows that you should watch (or rewatch) before then. So, this week, I'm hyping up Adolescence, which I consider one of the best Netflix limited series in recent memory. Told in just four transfixing episodes that are one continuous shot, the series follows Jamie (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old, who is arrested and accused of murdering his classmate. Now, his family, therapist, and the detective in charge are trying to figure out what really happened. The show is filled to the brim with award-worthy performances from actors, like Stephen Graham, but it's Cooper's unbelievable, chilling performance as Jamie that is incredibly astounding. It's honestly hard to believe this is his first professional acting credit. You'll probably binge-watch this show in one sitting because it's that perfect and enthralling. These are some of my favorite things from my FYP, feed, and more: A24 released the trailer for their new film Eternity starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, and I'm already gnawing at the bars of my enclosure to be able to go see it. The film follows Joan (Olsen), who arrives in the afterlife with an impossible choice. She must choose to spend eternity with the man she spent her life with or her first love. That's right. We've got Lizzie Olsen in a rom-com making sad eyes like she's so good at doing, so I will inevitably be weeping. The movie will hit theaters this November. You can also watch the trailer below: The movie will hit theaters on Dec. 19. You can also watch the trailer below: This week, over on BuzzFeed Celeb, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach played a hilarious game of Cast Wars to celebrate The Fantastic Four: First Steps. And, let's just say, you think they play a great family on screen, they might be even closer off screen because they knew so much about each other's previous projects, but also about the Fantastic Four and Marvel overall. It's such a delightful and hilarious time: Also on BuzzFeed Celeb this week, we had the internet's 'white boy of the century,' Logan Lerman, swing by to answer all of our burning questions while playing with puppies. If you thought he was sweet before, wait until you watch the wholesome energy radiating off of this Puppy Interview. Not only did we get to know him a little better, but we also found time to talk about The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson, and much more. It's so cute: Where I answer YOUR questions about TV, movies, fandom, and more: Question: Which movies from before 1975 do you think everyone should watch at least once? For me, it's got to be The Sound of Music (1965) and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). I grew up a huge musical theater fan, so The Sound of Music has always been in my life, and I consider it one of my favorite movies of all time. Nothing compares to Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer's chemistry. I also have to say It's a Wonderful Life because it's the movie that made me fall in love with classic black-and-white movies. It really lives up to the hype and is one of the best Christmas movies of all time. Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart are mesmerizing together on screen, and watching them in this led me to seek out more of their films. I highly recommend it. And we're continuing the discussion over here: Tell me, which two movies released before 1975 do YOU think everyone should watch at least once? Well, that's all I've got for this week's edition of Screen Time. Come back every week to get more TV and movie recommendations, find out which celebs we're working with, and so much more! Have a question for me, or want to tell me what you're watching right now, or have a suggestion of what I should watch next? Tom Cruise & Ana de Armas Spark More Romance Speculation With Intimate Yacht Escape
Well, Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas have a lot to explain now that yachting holiday snapshots of them have emerged. Is this how all co-stars interact? It's hard to tamp down the romance speculation at this point after they were first spotted together in February. The Deeper stars were seen in Menorca, Spain, this week in photos captured by Hello! magazine. They were on the deck together, wearing large-brimmed hats to protect their skin from the blazing sun. De Armas wore a breezy white sundress, while Cruise sported a light-blue shirt and navy blue shorts. The moment looked intimate as they chatted casually, but there was no obvious PDA moment. The duo appears very comfortable together, and her dog is also on vacation with them — this looks more than a platonic work outing. To refresh your memory, a People source maintained that the two actors were 'just friends' in March after they were spotted together multiple times. The 63-year-old actor then praised the 37-year-old Ballerina star to Extra. '[Ana is a] very, very talented, great dramatic actress, comedic, tremendous ability, learns quickly,' he said in May. Still, their supernatural film has hit a major roadblock, which makes Cruise and de Armas' yachting adventure even more curious. According to Puck News, Warner Bros. passed on making the film due to the sky-high price of $275 million. Cruise is reportedly shopping the project around to other studios that can meet his pricing demands. Us Weekly has hinted that a romance between them is blossoming, describing it as 'low-key' and 'still new and in the early stages' as of May. The media outlet also dropped a bit of tea, claiming it was Cruise's ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz who finally got him to ask de Armas out on a date. De Armas was guarded during a May appearance on Good Morning America when she was asked about her friendship with Cruise. 'It's so much fun,' she said about their possible film. 'We're definitely working on a lot of things, not just one but a few projects. I'm so excited.' So, the holiday in Spain is an even bigger clue that Cruise and de Armas have something brewing, and it appears to be more than work-related.
