People urged to plant saplings to improve greenery
On Thursday, to celebrate World Environment Day, a large-scale programme was taken up in the district to plant saplings and remove plastic waste from canals and drains under 'Vanam-Manam.'
As part of this, collector Nagarani, District Superintendent of Police Adnan Nayeem Asmi, district Joint Collector T Rahul Kumar Reddy, DRO Mogili Venkateswarlu, and district officials from various departments enthusiastically participated in the sapling planting programme at Collectorate here.
Later, collector Nagarani participated in the programme to remove plastic waste along the Vissakoderu canal and on the footpaths at the overpass on JP Road. She inspected the waste removal work being done in the canals under the auspices of the Irrigation Department and made several suggestions to the irrigation officials. As part of the waste removal, the soil placed on the banks was ordered to be moved to another area in a day or two. She ordered that the waste removal work in the four main canals in Bhimavaram town be completed on a war footing.
She advised the municipal and police officials not to allow coconut shells along the canal banks under any circumstances and that action should be taken against this.
Speaking on the occasion, collector Nagarani said that a programme to plant 3.85 lakh saplings has been started across the district as part of World Environment Day. Preparations have been made for planting saplings in government offices, places, roads, along the canal banks and panchayat places.
She asked the people to be partners in this and to bring about a change in the climate by planting saplings in the house premises and in open spaces outside. She said that nurseries have been developed in Venkataramannagudem, Seetharampuram and Konithivada villages of the district under the supervision of the Forest Department. She said that plants are the oxygen for humans and it is everyone's responsibility to plant trees in large numbers.
She said that staff from all departments took part to remove waste in the canals. District Additional SP V Bhima Rao, District Forest Officer D Asha Kiran, and others participated in the programme.

Noida and Ghaziabad to hear sirens as NCR gets ready for emergency response drill
Noida: Emergency sirens will be activated at 10 locations across Noida and Ghaziabad on Friday as part of a nationwide Suraksha Chakra disaster preparedness exercise. The drill will simulate earthquake and chemical hazard scenarios, with NDMA and NDRF officials evaluating district response capabilities and coordination. Sirens had gone earlier gone off in parts of Ghaziabad and other districts on May 7, a day before Operation Sindoor, as a part of a nationwide mock drill led by NDMA. In Ghaziabad emergency sirens were sounded near the Collectorate and other identified zones, prompting coordinated responses from civil defence units, police, and medical teams. Drills were also held in Noida as a district-level initiative. The drill simulated an air attack scenario, with mock evacuations, triage of 'victims', and rapid deployment of response teams. The upcoming exercise, which will begin at 9am, will be conducted simultaneously across 18 NCR districts. ADM (finance/revenue) Atul Kumar said, "Departments have been directed to be on-site before the drill begins and ensure that all arrangements are in place—from route maps and ambulances to communication systems and rescue tools." District magistrate Medha Roopam also reviewed preparations on Thursday and emphasised that the mock drill is not just a formality but a real-time test of inter-departmental coordination and on-ground readiness. In GB Nagar, the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) at the Collectorate has been designated as the main communication hub. The DM's office will act as the command post. Sharda Hospital will serve as the medical camp, and Malakpur Sports Stadium has been marked as the relief camp. The drill will involve multiple agencies, including police, fire services, civil defence, health teams, municipal staff, and disaster volunteers. Five incident commanders have been deployed to lead operations at each location. In Ghaziabad, the five identified sites are Ingraham Inter College, VVIP Addresses Society in Rajnagar Extension, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation's Loni plant, District Joint Hospital in Sanjay Nagar, and Modinagar Tehsil Bhawan. "This is a community effort," said Saurabh Bhatt, ADM (finance/revenue), Ghaziabad. "Residents, hospital staff, and govt employees posted at the identified buildings will be part of the drill. The idea is to involve the people who would actually be at risk during a real emergency. The exercise will include evacuation, first aid response, coordination with emergency teams, and more." Bhatt added that the warning sirens will be triggered manually using portable public announcement systems. "PA equipment will be taken to each location to simulate the alert mechanism. The drill needs to feel real, especially for first responders and residents. We'll be judged on how well we coordinate and respond under pressure," he said. In Ghaziabad, the District Disaster Management Authority and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at the Collectorate have been designated as the main control room for the mock drill. The Police Line Ground will serve as the staging area.

‘Services of Lions Club during natural calamities is immense'
Lions Club has served people in emergencies and its service motto will always be appreciable, Deputy Commissioner Harshal Boyar has said. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a programme to install office-bearers at the Basaveshwar Kalyan Mantap in Yadgir on Wednesday. Fishermen seek action on petitions submitted at meetings
A majority of the fishermen from Kanniyakumari district raised concern over the delayed responses and negligent actions of the authorities towards the petitions submitted at the monthly grievance redressal meetings. These concerns were raised during the fishermen grievance redressal meeting held at the Collectorate on Wednesday. At the meeting, fishermen from various regions, including Marthandamthurai, Kurumbanai and other coastal areas, said that their petitions often receive either negligent replies or in many cases no response. The issue arose when a petitioner from Melakurumbanai claimed that he never received a reply for his grievance, requesting the distribution of free land pattas to the needy from the vacant land near Colachel bus stand. In response to his petition, Kalkulam Tahsildar had noted that the land was classified as Ryotwari and therefore could not be allocated for distribution of pattas to the poor. However, the petitioner stated that he had never received that reply online. This made other petitioners highlight the absence of officials in the meeting and negligence in taking timely actions. Dhasan from Enayam highlighted the poor condition of government bus service to their village. He said several buses had been cancelled and those that were still in operation in extremely poor condition, raising serious concerns about passenger safety. South Asian Fishermen Fraternity has submitted a petition demanding compensation for Kanniyakumari fishermen affected by ship wreck of Liberian Cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3, off the Kochi coast. The submerged containers pose a risk to fishermen nets and boats. Collision with these containers may damage or even sink fishing boats. Now that the fishing period ban to end in Kerala, fishermen from Kanniyakumari will resume deep sea fishing in Kerala's maritime zone. The petition urged that compensation similar to Kerala should also be secured by the Tamil Nadu government for the fishermen from Kanniyakumari and their fishing equipment damaged due to the submerged containers. Padmanbhapuram Sub-Collector Vinay Kumar Meena, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Department Deputy Director Chinnakuppan, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Assistant Directors and other officials were present at the meeting. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena joined the session later due to official commitments.
