Anupamaa's Sudhanshu Pandey Says He Grew Up In A 30-Room Haveli: 'We Were Middle Class'
Sudhanshu Pandey shares how growing up with middle-class values in a 30-room mansion in Gorakhpur shaped his journey in showbiz.
Sudhanshu Pandey has been part of the entertainment world for decades, trying his hand at modeling, music, acting, and even reality TV. While he was recently seen in The Traitors on Amazon Prime Video, where he made it to the finale, Sudhanshu says it's his upbringing that's kept him grounded all these years.
In a conversation featured on Varinder Chawla's YouTube channel, Sudhanshu was asked how he manages to stay humble despite his success. He pointed to his upbringing and background.
'I think the biggest strength for people like me is the background we come from and that background is a very simple, middle-class background. I have always felt that has been my strength because I have known my reality. I know where I come from and where I belong," he said.
Sudhanshu also shared that although his family lived in a large home in Gorakhpur, their lifestyle remained simple.
'My parental house was in a place called Gorakhpur. We are originally from Uttarakhand but my parental house was in Gorakhpur and it was a 30-room haveli. We used to have cows so I came from that background. Yet, we were all middle-class simple people," he revealed.
The actor believes the way his parents raised him played a huge role in shaping who he is today. 'The simplicity that came to me from my parents and our life, was so basic and simple that that is what my foundation was. And I think because that foundation was so strong, it never let me get shaken up at any given point in life."
Sudhanshu Pandey began his career as a model before transitioning into films and television. He made his Bollywood debut in Khiladi 420 (2000) and went on to appear in movies like Singh Is Kinng, Dus Kahaniyaan, Siyaasat, and Bypass Road. He was also part of India's first boy band, A Band of Boys, known for hits like Meri Neend. On television, his most notable role has been Vanraj Shah in Anupamaa. He also featured in web series like The Empire and The Traitors on Amazon Prime Video, where he reached the finale.

Karisma Had A Turbulent Life, Says Suneel Darshan: ‘She And Abhishek Bachchan Had Chemistry But…'
Suneel Darshan reflects on Karisma Kapoor's broken engagement with Abhishek Bachchan and calls her life 'turbulent but dignified'. Producer-director Suneel Darshan, who has worked with both Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan in the 2002 film Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya, has reflected on the former couple's high-profile engagement and sudden breakup. The filmmaker called Karisma's life 'turbulent" but praised the strength of the Kapoor sisters and their mother Babita for enduring personal and professional challenges. 'Destiny Played With the Kapoor Girls' In a conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Suneel Darshan described Karisma's journey as emotionally intense. 'Destiny has played a lot of turbulence in the life of the Kapoor girls," he said. 'They are fortunate to have the mother they do, who has always tried to protect them, even if it meant making mistakes in the process. Babita ji is not God. She's a human being and can make errors." He acknowledged the love and support the sisters received growing up. 'These girls were brought up with a lot of care and love. They were supported in their careers," he added, choosing not to go deeper into family matters. 'Karisma and Abhishek Had Chemistry' When asked about claims that Karisma and Abhishek lacked chemistry, Darshan disagreed strongly. 'Chemistry was there, you have to watch Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya. Their chemistry in the film reflected their real-life bond," he said. He said that the breakup wasn't due to a lack of connection but rather external pressures. 'Sometimes the issues from outside their inner space created the problems and disturbed the whole thing," he added. 'I thought everything was good until that point. I still feel both Karisma and Kareena, I will stand by them anytime." Karisma and Abhishek's Brief Engagement In October 2002, Jaya Bachchan publicly announced Karisma and Abhishek's engagement at Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday bash. However, by January 2003, the engagement was called off without much explanation, leading to widespread speculation in the media. Life After the Breakup Abhishek Bachchan went on to marry Aishwarya Rai in 2007. The couple shares a daughter, Aaradhya. Karisma Kapoor, on the other hand, married businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003 and later separated. She is now a single mother of two and continues to enjoy success as a performer and public figure. Karisma Kapoor's Marriage To Sunjay Kapur Was 'Abrupt', Says Suneel Darshan: 'She Became A Trophy'
Last Updated: Suneel Darshan opens up on Karisma Kapoor's 'abrupt' marriage to Sunjay Kapur, saying she didn't fit into Delhi culture and became a 'trophy' for the family. Filmmaker Suneel Darshan, who has worked closely with Karisma Kapoor, has opened up about her marriage to businessman Sunjay Kapur, calling it 'abrupt." Speaking to journalist Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel, Darshan reflected on Karisma's personal life, her bond with Sunjay's family, and how her life changed after the wedding. When asked if he reached out to Karisma after Sunjay Kapur's recent passing, Darshan responded with warmth and empathy. 'We've exchanged this thing… I've known the issue too deeply. Right from the first day, I've known exactly," he said, recalling how Karisma was best friends with Sunjay Kapur's sister since childhood. 'Some things just need to be buried," he added, hinting at Karisma's tumultuous married life. The Abrupt End of Karisma Kapoor-Abhishek Bachchan, and Sudden Marriage Darshan described both Karisma's breakup with Abhishek Bachchan and her wedding to Sanjay Kapur as sudden. 'I thought it was an abrupt decision… something had to do with the stars — not film stars — the stars," he said. He also suggested that the marriage may have followed the emotional aftermath of her broken engagement. 'One didn't know what it was… she was never seen as a couple with Sanjay before. Some things are destined to happen." Karisma Wanted to Be a Homemaker, Not a Socialite Darshan recalled how Karisma had envisioned a homely life post-marriage. 'She wanted to be a domesticated wife… She wasn't the kind who wanted to go play golf on a Saturday. She wanted to spend time at home," he shared. He described Karisma as someone grounded despite her stardom. She was 'a nice girl, a very nice girl like that… it's very sad." 'She Became a Trophy for the Family' Darshan didn't mince words when asked if Karisma had become a 'trophy wife' for Sanjay's family. 'I think that was where the problem came. That's what I heard," he said. 'She was placed into a world which was not hers. Delhi has its own culture and she wasn't fitting into it." Despite her fame, Darshan said Karisma was never pretentious and came from a legacy rooted in simplicity, being Raj Kapoor's granddaughter and a former No.1 heroine. But in her new life, 'she was in this palatial house with endless cars… and it just wasn't her world." Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband, Sunjay Kapur, passed away in June 2025. His death was attributed to a heart attack, possibly triggered by a bee sting during a polo match in the UK. Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor were married from 2003 to 2016. They have two kids together. First Published: July 25, 2025, 01:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
