Probe charges against assistant commissioner: HC tells TMC
The division bench of justice GS Kulkarni and justice Arif Doctor has also directed the Thane civic chief to submit a report in three weeks, disclosing action taken against the assistant commissioner, Faruk Shaikh.
The judges passed the order after noticing allegations made by a petitioner, Feroz Badruddin Khan, who has filed a petition complaining about seven illegal buildings in Mumbra. In his petition, Khan specifically claimed that the assistant municipal commissioner 'was privy to an unauthorised construction of 13 illegal buildings', and that the civic official was charging ₹ 200 per square feet for unauthorised constructions.
The judges said that as a constitutional court, they cannot overlook such serious statements made on oath and ordered the TMC commissioner to undertake a preliminary inquiry into the allegations and consider initiating criminal proceedings, 'for the reason that such allegation against the officer and his accomplice prima facie amounts to an allegation of an offence being committed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 or other relevant laws.'
During the course of hearing, TMC also informed the court that they have completely demolished 10 of the 17 illegal buildings constructed on agricultural lands belonging to a widow, Subhadra Takle, pursuant to earlier court orders. They added that two of the remaining buildings have been demolished to the extent of 80% and remaining five were partially demolished and the work of demolition was going on.
However, on Monday, a huge mob gathered at the site, known locally as Khan Compound, and took to the streets to protest against the TMC's ongoing demolition drive.
As JCB machines arrived at the site for the demolition, angry residents raised strong objections. Heated arguments erupted between TMC officials and the locals. To control the tense situation, a large police force was deployed in the area. The crowd, however, dispersed after an hour.

A delegation of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs on Sunday visited the Jai Hind Camp in Vasant Kunj, south Delhi, home to Bengali-speaking migrants mostly from West Bengal's Cooch Behar, days after power supply was discontinued in the area on the directions of the Delhi High Court. The delegation, comprising Rajya Sabha members Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale, said the slum dwellers told them that they have been living without electricity for the last five to six days. 'We found that there are hundreds of families from Cooch Behar that have been living here for the past 20-25 years. The majority of them work as rag-pickers, and they are being asked to move as the private owners of the land want them out. We will send a detailed report to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,' said Mr. Roy. The TMC MP appealed to political parties and social organisations to help the residents of the camp, whom he said were living in 'subhuman conditions'. 'Just because they are Bengali-speaking, they are being targeted by the authorities and subject to inhuman actions. We must find some place for them to live,' he said. Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of being 'anti-Bengali', Ms. Banerjee, last week, in a post on X, said, 'There are over 1.5 crore migrant workers in Bengal who live with dignity. But the same cannot be said for BJP-ruled States, where Bengalis are being treated as infiltrators in their own country. Speaking Bengali does not make one a Bangladeshi. They are as much citizens of India as anyone else, regardless of what language they speak.' The police had conducted a verification drive in the area last year, following Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena's orders.

Mamata Banerjee to lead Kolkata protest on July 16 over migrant harassment row
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a TMC procession in Kolkata on July 16 to protest against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants outside the state, a minister said on Sunday. TMC leaders, workers, and supporters from Howrah, Bhangar, Dum Dum, and Salt Lake will participate in the rally.(HT Photo) The two-km march will begin from College Square in the northern part of the city around 1 pm on Wednesday and culminate at Dorina Crossing in central Kolkata, state finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said. "Bengali migrant workers facing harassment in Odisha and Maharashtra": Congress' Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury writes to President Murmu's; seeks intervention
New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to the President of India, expressing grave concern over the ongoing harassment, illegal detention, and physical abuse of Bengali-speaking migrant workers in states like Odisha and Maharashtra. In his letter, he highlighted that these workers are being wrongfully targeted due to their appearance and linguistic accent, under the false suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. In the letter, Chowdhury stated, 'I wish to bring to your kind attention the very sad and cruel fact about the harassment, humiliation, threats as also illegal detention and physical torture a large number of Bengali migrant workers who are eking out their living as daily wage labourers engaged mostly in un-skilled and semi-skilled occupations in different parts of states like Odisha, Maharashtra are being subjected to. The fact that the physical appearance and accent of the language spoken by these migrant workers, who are bona fide Indian citizens, is similar to that of Bangladeshis is being used as a pretext to harass, humiliate, physically assault and hold these innocent people in detention.' He further noted the significant economic contributions of these workers, saying, 'I would also like to reiterate that those lakhs of migrant workers who were compelled to venture into other states for their livelihoods also contribute significantly to the revenue kitty of the State Government through their remittances. Now those migrants are supposed to be rendered unemployed as they are the victims of witch-hunting of Bangladeshis resulting large-scale repatriation (returning back) to their respective destinations, much to the distress of them.' Urging immediate intervention, Chowdhury pleaded, 'I therefore earnestly plead for your kind intervention by way of taking appropriate measures to see that innocent Bengali speaking people who are bona fide Indian nationals working as labourers in Odisha, Maharashtra and other states are not subjected to harassment, humiliation, torture and loss of livelihood.' Meanwhile, TMC, through its official X handle, has released a video featuring TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, alleging a 'witch hunt' against Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. The party claims that Bengali workers are being harassed, detained, and deported across borders, while legitimate Indian citizens are receiving NRC notices solely for speaking Bangla. AITC accused BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari of labelling these individuals as 'Rohingyas' to communalise the issue and deflect from what they describe as a systematic targeting of Bengalis. The party further stated that Adhikari and his associates are 'enemies of Bengal and Bengalis' and predicted their rejection in the 2026 elections. No official response has been received from the BJP or Suvendu Adhikari at the time of reporting. (ANI)
