Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 54: a history of the number and who wore it best

USA Today2 days ago
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 54 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 54 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 54 wearer: C Zach Frazier
One of the best young centers in the NFL — second-year Steeler Zach Frazier is the current No. 54 wearer. Drafted with the 51st overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Frazier was stellar in his rookie season — earning the Joe Greene Great Performance Award and being named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. To say Frazier shows great promise is an understatement — as he looks to improve even further in Year 2 with the Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers offense in 2025.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 54:
Best No. 54 in Steelers history: LB Hardy Nickerson
No. 54 doesn't have as storied a history as some other historic Steelers jerseys, but the best Steeler to ever wear the number is Hardy Nickerson. Drafted with the 122nd overall pick in the fifth round of the 1987 NFL Draft, Nickerson played six seasons with the Steelers from 1987 to 1992 — compiling 426 combined tackles, five forced fumbles, and 9.5 sacks during his time in Pittsburgh. He would leave the Steelers to sign with the Buccaneers in 1993 — earning five Pro Bowl nominations, two First-Team All-Pro selections, and two Second-Team All-Pro selections in Tampa Bay. Despite playing his best football outside of Pittsburgh, his consistent production and leadership make him the greatest Steeler to ever wear No. 54.

NFL quarterback Josh Allen says he's cutting out these 2 foods — and his diet is 'probably the best it's ever been'

The Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen sticks to a protein-heavy diet and steers clear of dairy. He also works out four days a week, usually alternating between upper and lower body workouts. His recovery routine includes tools such as an infrared sauna with red light functions. The NFL player Josh Allen, 29, isn't just training hard; he's also eating clean. In an interview with GQ published Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills quarterback spoke about his fitness routine and how staying in shape starts with his plate. Allen, who married the actor Hailee Steinfeld in May, said his diet had never been better. "Honestly, right now, it's probably the best it's ever been, partly because I wanted to look good for some recent events in my life. I was making sure that I was staying fit and slim so I could fit in the clothes," Allen told GQ. He said he's not extremely hungry when he gets up in the morning, so he usually eats a light breakfast or lunch. "Sometimes I don't eat breakfast, and I don't follow the intermittent fasting diet," he said. His diet is heavy on protein, including steak, chicken, and fish. "Sushi is like my favorite food right now, so it's helped me with diversifying my proteins and what carbs I'm taking in. But I'm not sitting here counting calories," he said. When he goes back to Buffalo for training, there's a chef who cooks for the team at least twice a week, he said. "I'm also taking the butter and dairy out, trying to eat very clean," he added. In terms of exercise, Allen said he trains four days a week — Monday through Thursday — usually alternating between upper and lower body workouts. On days he feels like doing a full-body workout, he goes for a swim. "I grew up swimming competitively, and especially for what I do in my job, swimming is so good for my body," he said. Allen said he tries to get at least 8 ½ to 9 ½ hours of sleep a night. He's also added some modern tools to his recovery routine — most recently, an infrared sauna with red light functions. "Me and my wife have been doing that almost daily," he said. Allen isn't alone. Staying on top of diet and fitness is practically a full-time job for NFL players. Raheem Mostert, who plays for the Las Vegas Raiders, previously told Business Insider he takes an "everything in moderation" approach to his diet. Though he doesn't restrict himself too much, he's willing to make smarter choices to feel his best. "Prime example; if I'm eating a burger, I probably have no cheese on it just because I know that it's an inflammatory issue for me," Mostert said. "So I try to cut out those little things." The executive chef for the Kansas City Chiefs, Erin Wishon, told BI that a popular breakfast item among players was steak and rice. "The steak, particularly a lean beef tenderloin filet, provides high levels of protein, iron, vitamin B12, and healthy fats. Paired with rice, which offers quick carbohydrates, this combination makes for a highly satiating meal, especially for those with lean dietary preferences," Wishon said. On the other hand, Roman Montijo, a registered dietitian who's the Philadelphia Eagles' performance chef, told BI that bone broth and breakfast quinoa were favorites among the players. A representative for Allen didn't immediately respond to a request for comment sent by BI outside regular hours. Read the original article on Business Insider

Von Miller Sends First Message to Commanders Fans Following Contract Report

Von Miller Sends First Message to Commanders Fans Following Contract Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Von Miller has had a storied career. He's played 13 seasons in the NFL and is regarded as one of the best linebackers of his generation. After spending a decade with the Denver Broncos, Miller moved onto the Los Angeles Rams for one season. And most recently, he played three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. The now 36 year old has won two Super Bowls (2015 and 2021) and is the active sacks leader (129.5), ranking No. 16 in sacks in NFL history. He was also named Super Bowl MVP in 2015. And now, Miller will reportedly play for his fourth team of his career, the Washington Commanders. After being released by the Bills in early March, it was reported on Wednesday that Miller will be signing a one-year deal with the Commanders. Immediately following the news, Miller took to social media, sending his first message to Commanders fans. "DC ...What's good?" Miller posted to his official X account. Miller also posted two images of himself in a Commanders jersey on his official Instagram account. Miller will join a Commanders team that is on the rise and currently possesses a mix of young talent and talented veterans. Commanders quarterback, Jayden Daniels, is getting set to enter his second season in the NFL with high expectations. As for the defense, Miller will join fellow veteran LB, Bobby Wagner. The Commanders also have veteran cornerback, Marshon Lattimore on their roster. Both Wagner and Lattimore will enter their second season with the Commanders. The Commanders finished last season with a 12-5 record, their first season above .500 since 2015. They made it to the NFC Championship before getting eliminated by the eventual Super Bowl champion, Philadelphia Eagles. Miller's contract won't become official until he passes a physical with the team, and time will tell if he'll be ready and available for the Commanders first preseason game in just three weeks on August 8. Identifying 4 Best Mitch Keller Trade Destinations

The Pittsburgh Pirates went into the All-Star Break nearly 20 games below the .500 mark, poised to be sellers at the trade deadline on July 31. Among the club's top players prominent in MLB trade rumors, starting pitcher Mitch Keller is generating strong interest. An All-Star selection in 2023, Keller is getting better as the season unfolds. The 29-year-old is performing like a front-line starter worthy of a spot in a playoff rotation, increasing his trade value in the process. It makes it all the more likely that Pittsburgh moves him at the MLB trade deadline. Related: Let's evaluate some of the best trade destinations for Keller. Chicago Cubs The Jameson Taillon injury further depleted a Chicago Cubs rotation that is still hurting after Justin Steele underwent Tommy John surgery. Acquiring a half-season rental is certainly an option, but a club that intends to make Kyle Tucker one of the highest-paid MLB players this winter must find a cost-controlled starting pitcher. Enter Mitch Keller. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that Chicago has had multiple talks with Pittsburgh about acquiring the All-Star pitcher, and it's easy to see why there's so much interest. Mitch Keller contract (): $15.411 million salary (2025), $16.911 million salary (2026), $18.411 million salary (2027), $20.411 million salary (2028) Keller is showcasing his best stuff amid the added spotlight of MLB trade rumors. In his final six starts before the All-Star Break, he posted a 1.96 ERA with a 27-7 K-BB ratio, allowing just 24 hits across 36.2 innings pitched. While he doesn't have elite swing-and-miss stuff, Keller keeps the ball in the yard (0.68 HR/9) and racks up quality starts, which is exactly what Chicago needs. Related: Boston Red Sox A 10-game winning streak right before the All-Star Break ensured the Boston Red Sox will be buyers at the MLB trade deadline. With that established, the front office now must go out and find starting pitching. Ideally, it would be a cost-controlled starter, since Alex Bregman will likely want a new deal to re-sign this winter and Boston could also pursue Kyle Tucker. Mitch Keller stats (): 3.48 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 92-27 K-BB ratio, .237 batting average allowed, .644 OPS allowed across 119 innings pitched While Keller doesn't miss many bats (18.7 percent K-rate), he generates a lot of ground balls (44.8 percent), so he wouldn't be at high risk of giving up a lot more home runs in the AL East. There could even be a path to Boston making a three-team deal, with Jarren Duran going to the San Diego Padres and some of the Padres' prospects going to Pittsburgh. Keller might not have an extremely high ceiling, but he's the caliber of starter Boston needs and his contract is relatively team-friendly. Related: Toronto Blue Jays It's quite remarkable that the Toronto Blue Jays are tied for the most wins in MLB (25) since June 1, despite their starting rotation ranking 24th in ERA (4.87) over that 38-game span. Kevin Gausman might turn things around and Max Scherzer could stay healthy, but this isn't a group Toronto can feel safe betting on long-term. Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins has made it clear the team will be ultra-aggressive this summer, and that's the kind of approach it will take to acquire a playoff-caliber starter who is under contract through 2028. Acquiring Keller would add stability to the rotation, and Toronto could feel confident he would regularly provide quality starts, often working six-plus innings. Also Read: Detroit Tigers Starting pitching hasn't always been an area of need for the Detroit Tigers. Unfortunately, Jackson Jobe underwent Tommy John surgery in June, and Jack Flaherty's ERA sits at 5.40 over his last 14 starts. Given this club's aspirations and the fact that Jobe will miss most of next season, it might be wise to acquire another long-term starter. The Tigers absolutely have the depth and talent in their farm system to pull off a trade for Keller. If they are willing, Detroit could even expand the deal to include Pittsburgh's All-Star closer, David Bednar. While it would mean dealing a significant blow to the farm system, the Pirates would emerge as the big winners of the MLB trade deadline and Detroit would have an elite pitching staff heading into October.
