Row over Telangana Film Awards named after Gaddar as BJP, Cong trade fireworks
However, the event has sparked a row between the Congress and the Opposition BJP. Some BJP leaders are unhappy with the state film awards being named after famed Telugu poet and balladeer late Gaddar, who was also a former Maoist ideologue.
Before Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, these awards were given as the Nandi Awards in the undivided state.
This is not the first instance of the BJP expressing its opposition to Gaddar, who passed away in August 2023. In February this year, when the Revanth Reddy government suggested Gaddar's name for a Padma Shri award, Union Minister of State and former Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the Centre would never confer this civilian honour on 'Gaddar and his Naxalite comrades, who had caused the deaths of hundreds of BJP, Congress and TDP workers'.
At the time, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had lashed out at Kumar without naming him. 'If you insult Gaddar one more time, we will name the street on which the BJP office stands (in Hyderabad) after Gaddar. How will you go about without naming Gaddar anna (brother) in your address, we would like to see,' the CM had then said.
Now, on the TGFA event, state BJP spokesperson Krishna Sagar Rao told The Indian Express, 'It (naming the awards after Gaddar) sets a bad precedent. Our question is simple: How is Gaddar, who followed a path of violence against elected governments, related to the film industry and its artistes? Why will actors and technicians be proud to hold on to an award that is named after such a person,' he asked.
The Congress has, however, strongly defended its government's decision to name the film awards after the revolutionary poet. 'Gaddar is a cultural icon. Telangana's history is richer by his name and his contribution. Only the BJP can have a problem with him and our CM has said that Gaddar cannot be dispensed with,' a Congress leader said.
Telangana Congress spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin said, 'The BJP is raising some baseless allegations. The awards reflect the true spirit of inclusion.'
Born as Gummadi Vittal Rao, Gaddar was studying engineering when he was drawn to the Dalit Panthers and the Naxalite movements in the 1980s. He went underground and joined the People's War Group, a Naxal outfit that was later banned in Andhra Pradesh. He also toured Chhattisgarh and Odisha. He, however, distanced himself from the Maoists in the 2000s.
Known as a fiery singer and the 'people's balladeer', Gaddar had returned to prominence during the Telangana statehood agitation beginning in 2009 and penned several songs for this movement. Once only seen in a dhoti, red shawl and a wooden staff, Gaddar had transformed by then, wearing full-sleeve shirts and pants. He also wrote songs for the mainstream film industry, including 'Bandenaka Bandi Katti' in the 1979 film 'Maa Bhoomi'.
Amid the current face-off between the Congress and the BJP, some Telangana activists pointed out that three Gaddar awards – for best feature film on history, best music director, and best make-up artist – were also given to the film 'Razakar: The Silent Genocide of Hyderabad', which was produced by Telangana BJP leader Gudur Narayana Reddy.
'A propaganda film by BJP leaders targeting and spreading hate against Hyderabadi Muslims under the guise of the Razakar movie, has been awarded best film. Shockingly, the Telangana Congress and CM Revanth Reddy are endorsing the director's views,' Hyderabad-based civil rights activist S Q Masood alleged in a post on X.

No slums will be demolished, open to policy change: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
Facing fire from the Opposition and dissent within party ranks over the ongoing slum demolitions in the Capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Friday said her government is open to amending Delhi's slum policy — countering claims that the BJP is reneging on its promises to the urban poor. Calling slum dwellers the 'backbone of Delhi's working class,' Gupta announced a halt on all demolitions unless alternative housing is provided in advance. The Delhi government has also made it clear that no slum will be removed in the Capital. Gupta directed land-owning agencies like the Railways, Delhi Development Authority, and other departments to 'immediately cease' any eviction drives and warned that her government would approach the courts if necessary. Her statement comes weeks after eviction notices were served to residents of a jhuggi cluster in R K Puram, an area where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier assured slum dwellers that 'no jhuggi would be demolished'. The BJP has also faced internal criticism from its MLAs and booth workers, who had campaigned extensively in slums with the slogan 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makan'. Since the BJP government has taken charge in Delhi, major slums have been demolished over the past few months: Madrasi Camp (340 structures demolished), Bhoomiheen Camp (344 structures demolished), Jailer Wala Bagh (300 structures) and Taimoor Nagar (100 structures). Criticising both AAP and Congress, accusing them of historic neglect and using slum residents merely as 'vote banks', Gupta said: 'The Congress named colonies after their leaders but gave nothing. The AAP promised the world, but didn't even ensure clean drinking water or drainage. They pushed these communities into neglect and addiction.' She also announced that 50,000 unallotted flats in Outer Delhi — long left in disrepair — will be renovated under the PMAY-Urban and handed over to slum dwellers. The Centre has allowed Rs 732 crore, previously underutilised under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, to be repurposed for this housing initiative. In response to Gupta, AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Rekha Gupta and her party have been bluffing the poor residents of Delhi for many months now. If Rekha Gupta is actually serious about what she is saying, then she should ask the central government and its agencies — DDA, Railways, and L&DO — to withdraw cases against these JJ clusters in the High Court and the Supreme Court.' Attempting to reframe the demolition narrative, Gupta claimed the BJP is the first government to pair evictions with actual housing handovers, unlike her predecessors. 'Previous governments simply watched slums grow. We are finally giving people homes — and dignity,' she said. She said slums are an inseparable part of the national capital and asserted that her government is making sincere efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.

Dipali Sharma , who is stepping into the spotlight as the lead in Ektaa Kapoor's Pyaar Se Bandhe Rishte, is overjoyed about this new chapter. She spoke candidly about her path in the entertainment industry, landing the lead role in Ektaa Kapoor's show, and her experience working alongside Avinash Mishra. Tell us a little about your journey? I began my career as an engineer, but deep down, I was always passionate about storytelling and performing. Trusting my instincts, I made a bold decision to leave my job and step into the world of acting. I started out with television shows, which helped me build a strong foundation in the craft. In 2021, I made my debut in a Telugu film. Since then, I've been thankful for each opportunity and remain excited about taking on roles that challenge and inspire me as an artist. How does it feel to be a lead in Ekta Kapoor's next? Of course, it feels incredible. I've previously worked with Balaji on Barsatein and Yeh Hai Chahatein, but this project holds a special place in my heart because I'm playing the lead this time. What makes it even more exciting is that it's Balaji's first finite series on YouTube. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Candi: New Container Houses – Take A Look At The Prices! I believe in destiny. Having a godfather can be an advantage, but not having one doesn't mean you're at a disadvantage. If something is truly meant for you, you'll find your way—sooner or later. Some people are shown the way, while others create their own. Both paths are meaningful, but building your journey from scratch is what defines a true legacy. How is it working with Avinash Mishra for this one? Working with Avinash has been a truly pleasant experience. He's not just respectful and well-mannered, but also someone who contributes thoughtful ideas on set. His creative suggestions really enhance the process, and based on my experience, he's an excellent co-actor to work with. 100 day's work: TMC, CPM & Cong mull contempt plea after Centre fails HC deadline
Kolkata: With the Calcutta High Court-mandated Aug 1 deadline to Centre to resume the 100 days' work programme in Bengal getting over on Friday, Trinamool, CPM and Congress spoke in one voice to target BJP for ignoring the state's poor. The parties indicated they would move court against Centre for contempt. On June 18, the HC had directed "prospective implementation" of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (MGNREGS), suspended in Bengal for close to three years, from Aug 1. Saying that the scheme could not be "put in cold storage for eternity", a bench led by the Chief Justice had allowed Centre to impose special conditions and restrictions to check the irregularities and for recovery of money misappropriated in the past. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "This is blatant discrimination. People have worked but have not been paid. Uttar Pradesh, as per Centre's own data, has the highest number of fake job cards but it still gets funds. They are even disregarding HC orders to browbeat Bengal. This is sheer contempt of court." CPM has been protesting at block levels over the past month demanding restoration of 100 days' work and for non-payment of pending wages. "If 100 days' work is not restored following the court order, we will take it to the streets. We are also looking at taking legal recourse," CPM state secretary Md Salim said. Pradesh Congress president Subhankar Sarkar said: "Investigation into cases of corruption should be done. But that cannot be used as an excuse to deny the scheme that has a huge impact on rural livelihoods. If necessary, Congress will take legal recourse. The state govt, on the other hand, should come out with a white paper on the accounts of 100 days' work." Bengal BJP said there was lack of clarity in the high court's order. "The court, on the one hand, said that 100 days' work cannot be stopped. On the other hand, it has given a go-ahead to the investigation into allegations of corruption and agreed to Centre imposing conditions," state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said. "The CM met the PM with a delegation of parliamentarians. She said that the matter will be resolved through secretary-level meetings between Centre and state. The meetings never took place," Bhattacharya added.
