Chiefs' Chris Jones voted top interior defensive lineman by AP panel
While Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have carried the offense, Jones has done the same on the defensive end for the Chiefs with his knack of creating pressure at key moments playing a crucial role in Kansas City's success.
That helped Jones win the honor of being voted the top interior defensive lineman in the league by The Associated Press.
A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at interior defensive line, basing selections on current status entering the 2025 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.
Jones got seven of the eight first-place votes to go with one second to win the voting easily. Two other players were on all eight ballots with Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants getting the other first-place vote to come in second and Philadelphia's Jalen Carter finishing third.
Pittsburgh's Cam Heyward finished fourth and Quinnen Williams of the Jets came in fifth.
Seattle's Leonard Williams, Tennessee's Jeffery Simmons, Denver's Zach Allen and Carolina's Derrick Brown also received votes.
1. CHRIS JONES, Kansas City Chiefs
Jones' sack total of five last season was his lowest since his rookie season in 2016 but he still earned his third straight All-Pro selection after finishing second among all interior defensive linemen with 74 pressures in the regular season, according to Pro Football Focus. Jones' 72 sacks over the past seven seasons rank tied for fifth overall in that span and tied with Aaron Donald for the most among interior linemen.
2. DEXTER LAWRENCE, New York Giants
While most of the other players who got votes at interior defensive line are '3 technique' tackles who line up on the outside shoulder of the guards, Lawrence mostly plays nose tackle directly over the center. Those players are typically run stoppers since it is easier to double-team them in the pass game but Lawrence thrives at both. He had a career-high nine sacks in 12 games last season and his 103 pressures when lined up as a nose tackle the past three seasons are 80 more than any other player, according to PFF.
3. JALEN CARTER, Philadelphia Eagles
Carter was the anchor of Philadelphia's Super Bowl-winning defense last season. He has 10 1/2 sacks and 102 total pressures in the regular season in his first two years, according to PFF, and helps free up the edge rushers for the Eagles because he warrants so many double teams.
4. CAM HEYWARD, Pittsburgh Steelers
Heyward has shown no signs of aging as heads into this season at age 36. He had eight sacks last season when he earned his fourth first-team All-Pro selection. He has 63 1/2 sacks and 91 tackles for loss in the past eight seasons, earning Pro Bowl bids in seven of them.
5. QUINNEN WILLIAMS, New York Jets
Williams' production dipped last season as the Jets' defense struggled overall but he has been a consistent performer since being drafted third overall in 2019. He still has 176 pressures and 23 1/2 sacks the past three seasons.

Who drafted former Bucs top pick Jameis Winston land in 2015 NFL re-draft?
The NFL Draft remains the second-largest event on the NFL calendar, behind the Super Bowl. Like it or not, it also remains one of the biggest things that fans and media enjoy going back and analyzing to see "what could have been." Pro Football Focus has done a good job this offseason by launching a re-draft series, which we have been tracking here on Bucs Wire. In their latest draft, they looked back on, it just so happens to be one of the more impactful ones in recent memory for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise: The 2015 NFL Draft. In this draft, the Bucs had originally drafted quarterback Jameis Winston first overall in hopes he would be the franchise leader for years to come. That didn't pan out, so where does the former top overall pick land if he goes in the first round at all? Well, he didn't stay in Florida, but he didn't have far to travel. Sikkema has the Houston Texans selecting Winston with the 16th overall pick in the draft. He writes, "Houston desperately needed a franchise quarterback after Matt Schaub's decline and departure in 2013. Ryan Fitzpatrick provided a solid 2014 season but left for New York afterward. The best option in the 2015 draft was Jameis Winston, who posted a 74.1 passing grade and 112 big-time throws over five seasons as Tampa Bay's starter. Unfortunately, he also recorded the second-highest turnover-worthy play rate among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 dropbacks. Perhaps he could have fared better in a different environment." Perhaps Bill O'Brien would have been the coach to have Jameis Winston play his best football; we will never know. Also, Houston would have had a great defense to back up Winston, which also would have helped matters.

NFL Analyst Pumps Brakes on Hype Around Commanders QB Jayden Daniels
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Last season, Jayden Daniels burst on the scene in a big way for the Washington Commanders after being drafted No. 2 overall. While many are ready to crown him the next big thing at the position, one analyst feels things are being handed to him a bit too soon. When a team drafts a quarterback that high, they hope he can be a pillar for the franchise for years to come. Washington didn't have to wait long to see Daniels prove himself, as he put together one of the top rookie campaigns from a QB in league history. While navigating his first year in the pros, he nearly helped the Commanders reach the Super Bowl. They pulled off a pair of upsets in the postseason, but their run came to an end against the Philadelphia Eagles in the conference championship. Following his impressive showing last year, the hype around Daniels has gone through the roof. Many have dubbed him one of the league's best QBs already, and personnel within the league tend to agree. In ESPN's latest poll of the NFL's top ten quarterbacks, Daniels came in at No. 5. Some of the players he finished just ahead of include Matthew Stafford, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts. He feels such an honor is a bit premature, and he wants to see a little more from the Commanders' star before putting him in this conversation. "I think he had the greatest rookie season we've ever seen by a quarterback in NFL history and he got his team to the NFC Championship game," Schrager said. "I'd like to see the body of work though. I know if you're a Jayden fan or a Commanders fan you're rolling your it another year before we put him in that conversation." .@PSchrags thinks Jayden Daniels is ranked too high on the top NFL QB's list. Do you agree? 🤔 — First Take (@FirstTake) July 15, 2025 Also read: Analyst Gives Bold Take on Commanders Star Terry McLaurin's Holdout Daniels has loft expectations heading into year two, but the pieces are in place for him to continue ascending to a superstar talent. The Commanders upgraded the cast of talent around him to make sure he avoids the infamous sophomore slump. If Washington is able to get Terry McLaurin back in the fold, the second-year QB will have all he needs to back up all the buzz around him. Daniels will officially begin ramping up for the 2025 campaign next week when Commanders veterans report to training camp. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Bryan Braman spent his final moments with his daughters before dying of cancer
Bryan Braman was surrounded by those he loved most in the weeks leading up to his death. The 38-year-old former NFL player, who won his first and only Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018, died on Thursday, July 17, due to 'a rare, aggressive form of cancer,' according to ESPN. Braman's agent, Sean Stellato, confirmed his death in a phone interview with KPRC 2. 'I got the horrible news early in the morning after one of his best friends reached out and said that he took his last breath while surrounded by friends and family,' Stellato told the news outlet. He went on to describe Braman as 'unselfish' and 'generous,' even when he didn't need to be. 'Bryan, people saw this enormous human being, but his heart was big as his body. His spirit was so motivating. He was so real and genuine with everybody. That made him special,' he added, per KPRC 2. In an interview with People, updated July 18, Stellato spoke of how much Braman loved being a father. 'He loved his two girls so, so much. They were everything, his legacy,' he said of the football star's daughters, who 'spent the last two weeks with him when he was dying.' Braman was a proud girl dad to Blakely, 11, and Marlowe, 8, according to The Guardian. Braman was signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and quickly became a fan favorite for his play on special teams, which had him pegged as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2012, per CNN. He signed with the Eagles in 2014 and again in 2017, spending a total of four years with the team, according to Pro Football Reference. In 2018, after beating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII, Braman enjoyed a special moment with his agent as they celebrated the win on the field. 'Him and I cried in each other's arms when he won Super Bowl LII on the field. And I was holding his daughter in a photo, which was really cool,' Stellato told People. He further described Braman as a 'gentle giant,' despite his 6'6'', 250-pound frame. 'He'd be the first one to hold the door for someone, to give a few dollars to someone that was homeless, because he was homeless in his earlier days,' says Stellato. Braman reportedly sold his vehicle to help pay for treatment According to The Associated Press, Braman was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. A GoFundMe page, created in February in honor of Braman, confirmed that the Spokane, Washington, native 'is currently fighting a life-threatening cancer that requires an extensive 12-week treatment program.' 'He is required to have a 24-hour caregiver,' the GoFundMe description read. 'He has no home currently as he has had to pay our of pocket for much of his treatment, and even sold his last vehicle to raise the money for the motel fir this week,' the description continued. In an update on June 20, the organizer of the GoFundMe confirmed that Braman was home with his family after 'undergoing a Car-t cell reprogramming treatment program,' per the page. The football star underwent multiple surgeries, but the cancer continued to fight back. 'They have tried all of the various treatment options, and unfortunately, none of them are working against this cancer,' the update continued. 'But Bryan has not given up.' Several teammates and NFL players have donated to the cause, including J.J. Watt, Rasul Douglas, Chris Long, Quandre Diggs, Duane Brown, Brent Celek, Chris Ballard and Brian Cushing. Braman finished his NFL career with 56 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries in 97 games played over seven seasons. His last game — the Super Bowl win — turned out to be the biggest of his career.
