ASU coach: New York Giants' Cam Skattebo is 'all-ball,' has 'elite' football IQ

Even before getting drafted by the New York Giants, there was hype surrounding running back Cam Skattebo. The Giants took Skattebo in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft in hopes that he can complement the running style of Tyrone Tracy. Skattebo, who played at Arizona State University, recently received heavy praise from his former running backs coach, Shaun Aguano. "Great personality," Aguano told the Giants Huddle Podcast. "Intense guy that played the underdog mentality the whole time. What people don't understand, and you don't find this too much, is he loves football. He's an all-ball guy. That kind of persuaded me to jump on him real quick and persuade him to get to Arizona State. His football intelligence is probably one of the most elite things about him, as well as his athletic ability. But he understands the game of football and loves the game of football." Aguano was involved in recruiting Skattebo to play for Arizona State after playing the first two seasons of his college career at Sacramento State. After going in the fourth round of the draft, you can bet Skattebo is going to play with a chip on his shoulder in his rookie year and beyond. With the emergence of Tracy last season, Skattebo and his counterpart could be a great running back duo for years to come for the Giants. With Skattebo's aggressive running style and high football IQ, he fits the mold of the type of player head coach Brian Daboll looks for: "Smart, tough and dependable." The praise Skattebo received from his former running back coach only adds to the hype around the Giants' rookie running back.

Jaxson Dart named New York Giants' Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate

When the New York Giants drafted quarterback Jaxson Dart out of the University of Mississippi, head coach Brian Daboll made it clear that veteran Russell Wilson was the starting quarterback. Although that still seems to be the case, over the last couple of weeks, there has been speculative chatter that the Giants have not ruled out starting their rookie to start the season. Pro Football Network recently released a list of the top Offensive Rookie of the Year candidates for all 32 NFL teams, and Dart was the top candidate for Big Blue. New York Giants: Jaxson Dart, QB How much Jaxson Dart will play in 2025 is still unknown. However, what we do know is that the Offensive Rookie of the Year award has historically been given to quarterbacks, with 11 such winners since the year 2000. Dart's 2024 season with the Ole Miss Rebels shouldn't be understated. He had a QB+ grade of 90.5 last season in Oxford, the highest of any quarterback in the FBS and the 15th-highest QB+ grade since 2019. If Brian Daboll can get Dart reproducing similar numbers in his rookie season, then the award could very well be heading to the Big Apple. Realistically, Dart is the Giants' candidate by default, as the team's draft class consists of only four offensive players. Other than Dart, the Giants have offensive lineman Marcus Mbow (fifth round), running back Cam Skattebo (fourth round), and tight end Thomas Fidone (seventh round), all of whom have to climb the depth chart to make the starting lineup. In Dart's case, it's well documented that Daboll is pretty enamored with his rookie quarterback. With the Giants' schedule being among the most difficult in the NFL, if the team's record isn't promising in the early part of the season, we could see Dart sooner rather than later. Depending on how much Dart plays, he could certainly be an Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, especially with a big-time target like Malik Nabers to throw the ball to.

NY Giants Insider Reveals Truth Behind Russell Wilson's Offseason

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The national narrative doesn't support the idea that Russell Wilson could thrive with the New York Giants. Before the veteran gets under center for regular-season football, it's already assumed he'll be holding the clipboard soon enough. Two factors play into that thought. The first being that Wilson hasn't exactly had a handful of strong campaigns as of late. Following a forgettable stint with the Denver Broncos and a small stretch with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson is battling the "washed" narrative as a veteran quarterback. The second factor? Jaxson Dart. Whenever a franchise drafts a new quarterback in the early rounds, it leaves a fan base hungry to see the youngster in action right away. The hype gets fed by strong offseason performances as well. A strong spring for Dart has placed an obstacle in the face of Wilson. After seeing a good portion of spring practice sessions, Art Stapleton believes that Wilson isn't getting enough credit for what he put on display throughout his first offseason in New York. "All those being honest should give the same answer: It was Russell Wilson." "I admit it: would have been sooooo easy to just continue with the narrative that Russell Wilson is washed and Giants should move to Jaxson Dart right now as QB1," Stapleton continued. "But if I did that, it'd be so disingenuous." I admit it: would have been sooooo easy to just continue with the narrative that Russell Wilson is washed and Giants should move to Jaxson Dart right now as QB1 ... but if I did that, it'd be so disingenuous. I like everything I have seen from Dart, so that's not it. — Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) June 24, 2025 That's not to say that the Dart praise is a bunch of manufactured hype to fan the flames in the Wilson buzz. The Giants Insider added that he has liked "everything" seen from Dart this spring. But it seems Wilson's experience, with gas left in the tank, is just simply looking better. If that wasn't the case in OTAs and Minicamp, then the Giants would probably have to feel very worried after investing over $10 million in Wilson for the year. Read More: Jaxson Dart Makes Noteworthy Leap on NY Giants' Depth Chart As the Giants believe they can put up a strong fight in the NFC this season, it made sense for them to get an experienced passer under center, even if it's just for the year. New York just has to remain hopeful that Wilson can silence the noise that the acquisition of Dart brings. Last year, Wilson started 11 games for the Steelers. He completed 64 percent of his passes, throwing for over 2,400 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He went to the Giants, looking forward to playing with one of the most prolific young wideouts in Malik Nabers. Despite the national narrative, it sounds like the Giants are sold on the Wilson-Nabers duo, while Dart learns from the side, for the time being. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Over the past week, Odell Beckham Jr. has had the football world buzzing about a possible return to the New York Giants. As he continues to pander to the fan base, one key member of the team sent a message to the former star wideout. This whole ordeal began in New York last weekend when Beckham was in attendance for Fanatics "Fanatic Fest." While on an interview panel, a fan in the crowd shouted to OBJ and begged him to return to the Giants this season. He proceeded to give the crowd what they wanted, responding with "I got you." Earlier this week, Beckham would continue to create intrigue about his suiting up for New York once again. He posted a series of photos on Instagram of him and his son Zydn outside of Metlife Stadium. In the caption, Beckham reminisced on his time in the famous venue while opening up on the joy fatherhood has brought him. Among the most notable names to pop up in the comment section was standout wide receiver Malik Nabers. He too got in on the recruiting efforts, stating to Beckham that the job isn't finished yet. "We still got work to do," Nabers commented along with the smirking emoji. Long after Beckham's days in New York, Nabers has emerged as the latest touted receiver for the Giants. He put together an impressive rookie campaign after being drafted No. 6 overall, racking up 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. Nabers also passed OBJ in the Giants' history books, setting a new rookie single-season reception record with 109. NFL Analyst Makes Massive Jaxson Dart-Russell Wilson Claim

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Russell Wilson has received rave reviews since setting foot on the field for the New York Giants. Still, that doesn't erase the fact that there is a first-round rookie waiting in the wings. Jaxson Dart was drafted early enough for the Giants to be eager to get him out on the field. He's the quarterback of the future, and everybody knows it. Since the Giants have the mentality of a contender, they don't seem interested in getting Dart on the field so soon. They signed Russell Wilson to take advantage of the 36-year-old's experience, but the NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah isn't buying the idea that Wilson will be a full-time starter in 2025. "Everything I've read about Dart seems to be pretty positive," Jeremiah said during his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show. "I think he's got a chance to play pretty darn early here. We'll see how it goes." In order for Dart to get on the field as early as Week 1, a lot would have to happen. The rookie would need to look like a seasoned veteran, while Wilson would have to struggle. So far, both quarterbacks have earned praise for having a strong offseason. As a result, Dart reportedly began to jump ahead of Jameis Winston on the depth chart. Read More: NFL Analyst Utters Bold Take on NY Giants Rookie Jaxson Dart Leapfrogging Wilson won't be as easy, but Jeremiah believes that putting the redshirt on Dart doesn't seem like a sure path for New York, even after Wilson's praise-worthy spring. Jaxson Dart #6 of the New York Giants during rookie minicamp at NY Giants Quest Diagnostics Training Center on May 09, 2025 in East Rutherford, New Jersey."I think he's got a chance to play pretty darn early here," Jeremiah said of Dart. "We'll see how it goes. You just kind of listen to the words of Brian Daboll, and you get the sense that [Dart] was his guy. He's invested in him. He seems to really, really like him. He had Josh Allen, and once they got him in there, they were able to learn through some of the mistakes and get to a really good place. It sounds a little different, the way he's talking about [Dart]." Whether the Giants had Dart or not, Wilson was sure to have a lot of doubters in front of him when he signed this offseason. While Wilson is one of the most recognizable active players at the quarterback position, he's struggled to live up to his Seattle Seahawks playing days. Read More: Odell Beckham's Latest Post Stirs NY Giants Reunion Talk During his final season with the Denver Broncos, Wilson achieved a 7-8 record, throwing for 3,070 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Last year, he went 6-5 as the starter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, tossing 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, while tossing for over 2,400 yards in the air. Only time will tell if Jeremiah's prediction is correct, but one thing is for sure: Wilson would have to thrive in order to keep fans from pounding the table for Dart to start.
