From the Archive: 1977 Mazda GLC Drive
Mazda has just announced a new subcompact hatchback sedan called the GLC, but before you start looking for hidden meaning in the GLC name, you may as well know that there isn't any. It's just a collection of letters, and you're free to read into it whatever you will. However, Mazda suggests Great Little Car. So much for modesty.
The GLC is a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sedan. In specifications, it is very similar to a Chevy Chevette. In real life, it seems much better. Externally, it looks like a Chevette that has started to dissolve. The Chevrolet's sharp edges are replaced with soft curves. Nowhere on the GLC will you find the over-decoration that has become a trademark of Japanese cars.

While the GLC's shape is that of the Chevette, its dimensions vary only slightly—4.3 inches shorter than the Chevette, 3.2 inches less wheelbase, 1.4 inches wider—and it seems a happier compromise. The extra width makes the interior less cramped, the lower beltline gives the passenger compartment an airy feeling, and typical of Mazda, the front seats have an adjustment range of 6.3 inches, which gets you far enough away from the wheel to think you're in a far bigger car.

The GLC is Mazda's economy car and is therefore not scheduled to have a rotary engine. A 1300 cc four-cylinder is the only choice, but you can back it up with a four-speed manual, five-speed manual, or three-speed automatic transmission.
Our driving impression was based on a brief fling in pre-production models at Mazda's Miyoshi proving ground in Japan. In that session, the GLC was a real charmer. It's roomy, the ride is comfortable, and the car's behavior is so predictable you get the feeling you've driven it before. The five-speed is crisp, and the pedals are perfect for heel-and-toeing. Mazda plans to bring the base GLC into the U.S. for less than $3000. At that price, it really is a great little car.

Li Auto (NasdaqGS:LI) Reports Over 1.33 Million Deliveries Year-To-Date
Li Auto recently announced significant delivery figures, reporting the delivery of 36,279 vehicles in June 2025 and reaching 1,337,810 cumulative deliveries for the year. Despite the company's robust sales performance, its share price increased by 5% over the last quarter, closely aligning with broader market trends, which saw a 14% increase over the past year. The downward revision of delivery outlook due to a sales system upgrade likely subdued additional gains, while broader economic concerns, including trade talks and labor market data nationwide, added weight to Li Auto's modest price appreciation. We've identified 1 possible red flag for Li Auto that you should be aware of. AI is about to change healthcare. These 25 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10b in market cap - there's still time to get in early. The recent delivery update from Li Auto, coupled with a modest 5% share price increase over the last quarter, reflects mixed market sentiment, partly due to the revised delivery outlook necessitated by a sales system upgrade. Despite these challenges, Li Auto continues to bolster its position in the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market through investments in autonomous driving and battery electric vehicles. Over the past year, Li Auto's total return, including dividends, reached 37.94%, indicating a stronger performance compared to the 13.9% return of the broader US market during the same period. This highlights the company's growth potential and resilience despite sectoral and broader economic pressures. Looking forward, the company's focus on expanding its product offerings and supercharging networks may enhance its revenue trajectories and customer acquisition efforts. However, the competitive pressures and increased AI-related investments pose a potential risk to margins and cash flow. The consensus analyst price target for Li Auto stands at US$33.69, a 24.9% potential upside from the current share price of US$25.68, indicating room for market optimism regarding future earnings, which are forecasted to grow by 23.72% annually. Investors should carefully weigh these forecasts against the potential impact of intensified market competition and investment-related strains on profitability. Renault to Post $11B Losses After Nissan Stake Revaluation
Renault SA RNLSY has announced that it will recognize losses of $11 billion in the first half of 2025 to clearly reflect its current stake in Nissan Motor NSANY. France-based automaker Renault currently owns 35.7% of Nissan, with 17.05% held directly and the remainder through a trust. As Nissan has been struggling with declining sales, outdated product lines and Trump's tariff policies, Renault has gradually loosened ties. As Renault's valuation of its investment in the Japanese automaker was well above its share price, it has now decided to reflect the value of holding directly in equity based on Nissan's share price. Following Nissan's inability to recover from the crisis sparked by the 2018 removal and arrest of former chairman Carlos Ghosn, combined with recent struggles due to the emergence of electric vehicles, Renault has been lowering its stakes after two long decades of partnership. Renault now partners with Nissan only in specific projects instead of large integrations. Nissan's reported loss of $4.5 billion for the financial year ending March and its suspended forecast for the current year also raise concerns. The adoption of a new accounting method, although it results in a significant non-cash loss, will benefit Renault by reducing volatility in its earnings without causing fluctuations in full-year guidance or dividend payouts. Renault will delay its payments to suppliers as it has to free up short-term funds. Nissan continues to navigate its way through existing pressures while also being on the lookout for a new CEO. Meanwhile, the strategic and operational commitments between the Renault Group and Nissan will remain the same. Shares of RNLSY and NSANY have slumped 9.6% and 30.7%, respectively, over the past year compared with the industry's 16.3% decline. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research RNLSY and NSANY currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A few better-ranked stocks in the auto space are Ferrari N.V. RACE and Luminar Technologies LAZR. While RACE currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), LAZR carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for RACE's current-year earnings is pegged at $9.89 per share, indicating a 7.97% year-over-year earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 10.75%. RACE's shares have gained 18.1% in the past year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Luminar's 2025 loss is pegged at $4.29 per share, indicating an improvement of 53.57% from year-ago levels. The company's earnings beat the consensus estimate in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average surprise of 11.79%. Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research?
