Southwick Motocross 2025 preview: Top finishes, previous winners, historic results, who to watch
Jett Lawrence is the defending champion of this race, which is part of an incredible 19 overall victories in 20 Pro Motocross rounds. However, this race will be the last time in 2025 that this distinction will hold true. Last year, Jett injured his thumb in a practice crash following the Southwick event and missed the remainder of the season, only to return and win two of the three SuperMotocross Championship rounds and the championship.
Dan Beaver,
Jett's sweep of the motos last week moves his total to 34 of 40 races.
NBC Sports analyst Ricky Carmichael has the most wins on this track with eight, while second-place Jeff Stanton has four. The winningest active rider is Eli Tomac, who sits third on the chart with three. He could move up one spot to tie Stanton for second on the list, or the more likely alternative is that Jett will move up one position and tie Tomac for third.
A Remarkable Headline
However, regardless of those outcomes, this will be a special race, as this venue often favors dark horses. Jett and Eli are the only riders in the field with multiple overall victories, and 16 others have one each. Dylan Ferrandis is included in that list, but the vast majority of the field has not yet won at The Wick. Justin Cooper and Aaron Plessinger are poised to capitalize on the egalitarian nature of this venue.
Fans should add Hunter Lawrence's name to that list as he is one of five riders who have swept the top five in the first four rounds alongside Jett, Tomac, Plessinger, and Cooper. And Hunter is tired of finishing second, having done so seven times in his career without an overall victory.
RJ Hampshire is the only other rider with four top-10s to his credit in 2025.
Remarkably, in three seasons — one of which was shortened by injury — Jett has already moved to 10th on the all-time 450 Motocross wins list. If he scores the overall victory this week, he will tie James Stewart and Jeff Stanton for eighth.
250 Notes
Haiden Deegan looks to defend his 2024 Southwick victory, a task made easier by the departure of Chance Hymas following an ACL injury last week at High Point. Deegan has dominated the first four rounds with two 'perfect' days. He was the fastest qualifier and swept motos in two rounds (Hangtown and High Point), marking the first time that has been accomplished since Dylan Ferrandis in 2020.
All three of Deegan's victories this season came after he swept the motos.
But winning back-to-back races at The Wick is difficult. In the past 11 rounds on this track, there have been 11 different winners, according to WeWentFast.com.
Jo Shimoda could emerge as Deegan's fiercest competitor this week. Southwick is his best track with four podiums in four rounds. In that span, he's accumulated two moto wins, but they came in the past two seasons in the second race of the day after he experienced terrible starts. Shimoda was 6-1 in 2023 and 9-1 last year before finishing third overall. He'll need to get off the gate quickly in Moto 1 this week to reverse the trend.

Confidence high for another playoff run for reigning Cup champ Joey Logano despite results
Reigning Cup champion Joey Logano has one top-10 finish in the last eight races, but he and crew chief Paul Wolfe see progress by the team that could lead to another title run. Logano claimed a playoff spot with his victory in Texas in early May. But since placing fourth at Nashville in early June, Logano has not finished better than ninth. He'll look to change that Sunday at Iowa Speedway (coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network). 'When I sat down with Joey a couple of weeks ago and just kind of laid out the playoff rounds and what tracks are where, obviously it's a little different again this year, I told him I feel pretty good, there's a pretty clear path, 'Wolfe told NBC Sports ahead of last weekend's race at Indianapolis. ' … There's no reason if we do our jobs that we can't be in Phoenix again.' Nate Ryan, After winning only once in the regular season last year, Logano won three playoff races on the way to his third Cup title. Fifteen of his 37 career Cup wins — 40.5% — have come in the playoffs. While Logano finished 14th at Dover and 32nd at Indianapolis the past two weeks, both races showed promise for the team, Logano said this week on 'The Morning Drive' on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. 'Dover has notoriously been our worst racetrack, and we were pretty good there,' he said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. 'Like we weren't great, we weren't going to go up there and win the race, but we can run the top six to 10. That's way better than last year. 'In Indy, we had better speed than we had last year and we were positioned to win that race if we can just keep air in the tire.' Wolfe's strategy had Logano as the lead car that had made its final pit stop before a right rear went down 25 laps from the scheduled finish. Logano's race was made worse when he was collected in a crash on the first of two overtime restarts. 'There is some momentum behind the 22 right now, behind Team Penske, that there's some good things going,' Logano said this week on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. 'I mean, if I look at Indy alone, (teammate Austin Cindric) was probably the best car, probably the car that could have won the race. Had a flat tire, too. Then we were next in line. I feel like that's a good thing. We're not that far off.' Wolfe said a tire test last week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway went well for the No. 22 team. New Hampshire will host the opening race of the second round of the playoffs in September. 'I feel confident in where we're at,' Wolfe said ahead of Indy. 'We had a great two days up in New Hampshire, which was encouraging. I think the driver probably has some pretty good confidence after the test as well.' Dustin Long, That Logano did the Goodyear tire test at New Hampshire was a part of Wolfe's strategy to make a run at back-to-back Cup titles. 'As we looked at the testing schedule in the offseason, all the Ford teams divvy them up and then we divvy them up amongst our company,' Wolfe said. 'So we're like where do we want to go, what's going to be most productive for us? 'There's different theories and approaches. Do you go test at the track that is your weaker track, or do you go somewhere that is your strength and really make it better and know that you have a legit chance to win that race? 'That was kind of the approach I took, was, hey, we know (New Hampshire) is a really good track for us, it is a short track, obviously, Phoenix, the final race, is a short track, let's take that one and make that one even a step better than what we've been and that was our approach.' Wolfe admitted he had to convince Logano that it would be best to test at New Hampshire than do a tire test elsewhere. Teammate Ryan Blaney took part in a tire test at Charlotte and Cindric did the tire test at Iowa earlier this season. 'Joey, at first, when we discussed it, (he was saying) we're not very good on intermediates, should we take the Charlotte test?' Wolfe said. 'I said let (Blaney) have that, he's typically our fastest car on the high-speed tracks. Maybe they can learn something there that helps us all. 'I feel like if we're going to go somewhere and really dial in a setup, Joey's going to do it as good or better than any one of our drivers in our company. I feel like we've shown that over the years. 'When we go to Phoenix for these championship races, us and (Blaney) are running the same setup because it works and we've developed it throughout the year and testing and that's kind of what we did (at New Hampshire) and we feel good about it.'

Stefon Diggs already setting the tone for QB Drake Maye with confident message
FOXBOROUGH — With six straight 1000-plus yard seasons, four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs has a lot of confidence when he steps foot on the field. And he's making sure that Drake Maye also feels confident whenever he targets the veteran receiver. Maye and Diggs have connected a lot during team periods throughout training camp, and when speaking with reporters on Thursday, the second-year quarterback detailed exactly what the receiver told him. "I think it's just his mindset, just attacking the football. A guy like that, with his stature, who's caught a lot of touchdowns in this league and made a lot of big plays, he wants to go get the football," Maye said. "And he tells me all the time, 'if the ball's in the air, it's going to be mine.' "So, I think it's comforting hearing that from those guys," he continued. "I think that's kind of starting to become something in the receiver room, that's the mindset. When the ball's in the air, go get it. So, I think it's comfortable hearing that. And it's comfortable, a guy who's also gone out there and proved it." However, Maye also takes just as much responsibility, acknowledging that a good play always starts with him. "It comes with me making a good throw as well," he explained. "So, just trying to do my part and let those guys — they get paid a lot of money too. So, let those guys make their plays, and just comes off the feeding off each other, of letting them do their part and doing mine." Diggs is more determined than ever, with his 2024 season ending early after he tore his ACL. His recovery was extremely speedy, as he was given the full go before the start of training camp, and he's already made numerous impressive plays. So, we'll just have to wait and see what he and Maye have in store when the regular season begins in September. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Rodri fitness update following Al Hilal injury scare ahead of Manchester City training return
Manchester City supporters can expect to see Rodri return to training as normal next week despite his injury scare at the FIFA Club World Cup, it has been reported. While the sight of Rodri limping off the pitch against Al Hilal earlier this summer may have caused concern at the time, all indications suggest that the incident was minor and has not resulted in any long-term fitness issues. The Spain international's role in Pep Guardiola's side has become increasingly crucial over recent seasons, and a full pre-season will be vital to City's hopes of starting the 2025/26 campaign with momentum, as well as Rodri's hopes of sufficiently building up match fitness after his recovery from last season's serious knee injury. Rodri played a staggering number of games prior to last season and largely only missed matches when unavailable through suspension. The Ballon d'Or winner featured heavily across every competition, maintaining his reputation as one of Europe's most consistent performers in the defensive midfield role. However, Pep Guardiola has previously admitted the team struggles without him, underlining the importance of his availability moving forward, further underpinned by the successive months City went without Rodri following his surgery on an ACL injury last October. With City gearing up for their returning to training and sole pre-season friendly against Palermo on August 9, Guardiola will want all of his key players back in shape as early as possible. Rodri's return to Manchester City training, particularly if he can participate fully from day one, will be a major boost as the club continues their preparations both domestically and abroad. According to the information of the Manchester Evening News' Tyrone Marshall, City medical staff will assess Rodri's fitness next week upon his return to pre-season training at the City Football Academy. It is reminded that the Spaniard was spotted limping out of his side's surprise defeat to Al Hilal at the FIFA Club World Cup with what appeared to be a minor problem, but the Ballon d'Or winner is expected to report back for training as normal on Monday. With Ilkay Gündoğan's future uncertain and Mateo Kovacic recovering from an Achilles injury, Rodri's presence in central midfield becomes even more critical in the short term. City are yet to finalise their squad for the coming season, with exits from the extensive squad roster still anticipated, largely concerning the likes of Kalvin Phillips, James McAtee, and Jack Grealish. Rodri's workload has been the subject of concern in recent months, with Pep Guardiola previously stating that the 29-year-old is in need of rest and perhaps a reduced schedule amid his non-stop run of appearances prior to his ACL setback. However, the player himself has continually maintained the stance that he has been managing his body well during his recovery process in recent months, and is capable of maintaining high physical output if monitored correctly. In the coming weeks, City's pre-season schedule – including the Palermo fixture and behind-the-scenes preparations – may offer valuable insight into how Guardiola intends to manage Rodri's minutes, with supporters hopeful of the midfielder playing a leading role. Should Rodri emerge from pre-season unscathed and sharp, Manchester City will be in a strong position to build around his presence once again – something that has proven essential to their domestic and European ambitions year after year.
