Congress postpones protest due to Shibu Soren's demise
Bengaluru: The Congress party's planned protest rally against electoral malpractice, led by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has been postponed to August 8, following the demise of veteran Jharkhand leader and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren. This was announced by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Monday. Speaking to the media at Freedom Park, Shivakumar said, 'Shibu Soren was a towering tribal leader and a longtime ally of the Congress. As a mark of respect, the protest scheduled for Tuesday has been rescheduled. The final rites of Soren will be held on Tuesday at 3 PM, and hence, we have decided not to proceed with the protest on a day of national mourning.' He urged party workers, leaders, and supporters to retain all the preparations made for the event and assured that the protest would take place at the same venue and time on August 8. Shivakumar emphasized that Rahul Gandhi's scheduled press conference in Delhi has also been postponed. 'After the final rites tomorrow, further details will be announced,' he added. Reflecting on Soren's legacy, he said, 'Shibu Soren stood firmly with the Congress during critical times, including the tenure of former PM PV Narasimha Rao. We supported his government, and he supported ours. We pray for his soul to rest in peace.' Despite the Varamahalakshmi festival on August 8, Shivakumar said party duties take precedence. 'We are not against people celebrating the festival or offering prayers, but we expect full support for the party's cause,' he said, appealing to all Congress leaders and workers to participate in the asked about BJP's counter-protest in support of the Election Commission, Shivakumar responded, 'In a democracy, protests and criticism are welcome. But the Election Commission should be neutral. It must act fairly and serve justice. During the Assembly elections, our candidate from Mahadevapura filed a legitimate complaint, but the response was inadequate. Now, our internal study has revealed more evidence which we will present to the public. Let the people decide who is right and who is wrong.'Regarding the Congress Legislature Party meeting, Shivakumar mentioned that the leaders are considering calling one soon to coincide with the protest and discuss future strategies. The Congress party's protest, now set for August 8, is expected to see a massive turnout, with the spotlight on alleged voter fraud and the party's demand for accountability from electoral institutions.

Cabinet To discuss SC QUOTA report on AugUST 7
Bengaluru: The long-awaited final report on internal reservation among Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Karnataka has been submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah by the commission headed by retired High Court judge H.N. Nagamohan Das. The voluminous report comprises 1,766 pages, including survey data, annexures, and six key recommendations. The commission conducted a state-wide survey between May 5 and July 6, 2025, covering 27,24,768 SC households and 1,07,01,982 individuals. The report aims to provide a comprehensive basis for intra-reservation within the SC community, as per constitutional and judicial guidelines. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, CM Siddaramaiah confirmed receiving the report and stated that the cabinet will deliberate on its contents in the upcoming meeting on August 7. 'The report has been submitted today, but we have not reviewed its contents yet. It will be discussed in the cabinet meeting,' he said. Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara described the report as historic and noted that its implementation would be deliberated by the cabinet. Minister K.H. Muniyappa expressed confidence that the recommendations would be implemented, while Social Welfare Minister R.B. Thimmapur reiterated the government's commitment to act on the findings. Thimmapur also recalled that the commission was initially set up by former CM S.M. Krishna. He criticized the BJP for rejecting the Sadashiva Commission report and affirmed that the Congress government is determined to ensure justice through internal reservation. The Nagamohan Das Commission was constituted in January 2025 to study sub-categorization among SCs due to lack of accurate data. The interim report, submitted on March 27, 2025, led to cabinet approval for a detailed socio-educational survey. The commission's recommendations are based on educational backwardness, inadequate representation in government jobs, and social indicators. It aligns with Supreme Court directives that allow sub-categorization under Article 14 of the Constitution, provided no existing beneficiary is excluded. The cabinet's decision on the implementation is expected to shape the future of reservation policies for SC subgroups in the state.

‘Unable to accept erosion of its dominance': After India, Russia hits back at US on inflated tariffs over oil trade
Days after Trump unveiled a new set of steep tariffs, Russia on Monday responded to the US administration for increasing tariffs and imposing sanctions on the country, accusing the government of using 'neocolonial' policy against specific countries to maintain Washington's hegemony. Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in a statement, said no tariff wars or sanctions 'can halt the natural course of history'. Calling sanctions and restrictions a 'regrettable reality' of today's historical stage that affects the entire world, she said that the US is unable to come to terms with the 'loss of hegemony in the emerging world order.' 'Sanctions and restrictions have unfortunately become a defining feature of the current historical period, impacting countries across the globe. Unable to accept the erosion of its dominance in an emerging multipolar international order, Washington continues to pursue a neocolonial agenda, employing politically motivated economic pressure against those who choose an independent course on the international stage,' she said. Russia asserted in its statement that 'no tariff wars or sanctions can halt the natural course of history.' Zakharova further said that Russia will deepen in cooperation with countries of the Global South, and resist the 'unlawful unilateral sanctions.' The response issued by Russian Foreign Ministry came hours after India issued a strongly worded statement over US imposing inflated tariffs on New Delhi for indulging in trade with Moscow in the middle of the Russia-Ukraine war.
