Ederson describes Manchester City exit rumours as ‘fake news'

PA Media/dpa Orlando Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has dismissed speculation he could leave the club as 'fake news'. The Brazilian has one year remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. The 31-year-old has spent the past eight years at City and helped the club win 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League. 'My future is here,' Ederson said. 'Some friends send me lots of news, but 99% is fake news. 'I understand you guys, you need the news, to put a 'like' on social media but there's a lot of fake news around my name. 'My head is here. It stays with City. It means everything to go back to the Premier League and to try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.' Ederson's comments come after number two keeper Stefan Ortega, who also has just one year remaining, refused to discuss his future when asked during City's Club World Cup campaign earlier this week. The 32-year-old German has largely remained in Ederson's shadow during his three years at the club. 'It's quite early for that question,' Ortega told media in the United States. 'I can't say anything about that, it's too early.' City endured a frustrating 2024-25 season, failing to defend their league title after four successive triumphs and exiting the Champions League before the last 16. In response the club have been overseeing a squad overhaul and it is not yet clear whether either goalkeeper is part of the long-term plans or if any contract negotiations are under way. Asked specifically about Ederson at his press conference to preview Thursday's game against Juventus in Orlando, manager Pep Guardiola said he did not know whether the Brazilian would stay beyond next season. He said: 'I don't know, but I am so pleased with what I am seeing in the training sessions and he is with us. 'He has had a spectacular decade with us and his contribution has been massive in many aspects.'

Dortmund top group at Club World Cup; Inter win to reach last 16

dpa Cincinnati, Ohio Borussia Dortmund beat Ulsan HD 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the last 16 at the Club World Cup from Group F along with Fluminense although the Brazilians were held 0-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in the other match. Dortmund were utterly dominant against their South Korean opponents but a little wasteful as they only managed a 36th-minute goal from Daniel Svensson. That was however enough to snatch first place in the group with seven points from Fluminense, who finished on five, one ahead of South Africans Sundowns who failed to get the win they needed to advance. Ulsan finished on zero points. In the last 16, Dortmund will face the Group E runner-up on Tuesday in Atlanta, while Fluminense take on the Group E winners a day earlier in Charlotte. 'In the end we deserved to advance together with Fluminense,' Dortmund coach Niko Kovac told streaming portal DAZN. 'We wanted to get through the group stage, we did that. The first half was decent given the heat. In the second half you could see that the lads preserved the lead.' Dortmund had newly signed Jobe Bellingham in the starting 11 again, and like in their previous match the substitutes following the game from the dressing room to keep out of the intense afternoon heat. Serhou Gurassy wasted an early chance when he aimed inches left for the Germans who were in complete control from the outset. Bellingham set up Guirassy to be denied by goalkeeper Jo Hyeon Woo before Bellingham blazed over. Dortmund finally broke the deadlock in the 36th when Bellingham set up Svensson to fire home after the South Koreans lost the ball just outside their penalty area. Jo made further saves, including a spectacular one with his foot against Pascal Gross, to keep Ulsan in the game. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was finally called into action as Ulsan became more adventurous after the break, most notably on his guard against Lee Jin Hyun on the hour. Dortmund finally woke up again as Julian Duranville fired into the side netting in the 67th, and Jo saved from Yan Couto in the 83rd in what was Dortmund's final chance. In Miami Gardens, Sundowns surprised Fluminense with a bright start as Tashreeq Matthews aimed right at goalkeeper Fabio in the eighth minute, and again from a tight angle a minute later. The Brazilians grew into the game and should have led from Ignacio's header off a corner kick, Jhon Arias fired wide on another major chance in the 36th, and Ignacio missed the target again narrowly in the 41st. Arias set up German Cano to fire against the near right post in the 67th on Fluminense's best chance while Sundowns failed to come close to the winner they would have needed to stay in the tournament. Fluminense will face Inter Milan in Charlotte after the Champions League finalists made the most of a River Plate red card to score twice in the last 18 minutes to win 2-0. Teenager Francesco Esposito scored his first goal for the club, minutes after Lucas Martinez Quarta had been dismissed. Alessandro Bastoni sealed the win with a left-footed strike from outside the box in stoppage time but there was still time for Gonzalo Montiel to follow Quarta in seeing red. River Plate missed out on the last 16 after Monterrey grabbed second spot in the group with a dominant 4-0 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds. Nelson Deossa opened the scoring in the 30th minute, quickly followed by goals from German Berterame and Jesus Corona. Bererame added a fourth in the closing minutes as the Mexican side booked a clash with Dortmund.

Real coach Alonso praises Jude Bellingham: ‘Has a lot of quality'

PA Media/dpa London Xabi Alonso says he 'loves' what England midfielder Jude Bellingham gives to Real Madrid. Bellingham scored his first goal of the Alonso era on Sunday as Real Madrid made light of Raul Asencio's early red card to beat Mexican side Pachuca 3-1 at the Club World Cup. Los Blancos will complete their group programme against RB Salzburg in Philadelphia knowing victory will take them into the round of 16 as Group H winners. Both teams are level on four points after two games, with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal on two. 'Obviously, he is going to continue being a key player for us,' Real manager Alonso said of Bellingham at his pre-match press conference. 'I love what he does in the centre of the field and how he participates in all the plays. 'He has a lot of quality, we saw it against Pachuca, and we are always close to him. 'Jude has a lot of ambition, he wants to improve and continue growing, and we want to continue seeing how he grows.' Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the Real squad, despite returning to training on Wednesday following illness. The France forward has yet to feature in the tournament. Alonso said: 'I was happy to see him on the field, but it was the first day he put on his boots and it's not good. 'We have talked about it ourselves after training and he prefers to be recovering and preparing for the round of 16.' Ferland Mendy and Eduardo Camavinga also remain out as Real renew rivalries with Austrian opponents they thrashed 5-1 in the Champions League in January. Alonso said: 'We have two objectives to win and finish first in the group. 'In the last match we had good feelings, despite having one less player, both with and without the ball. 'Hopefully the same can happen with Salzburg, who are a dynamic and intense opponent. 'I don't think it's a good idea to think that I'm not going to win the match, that's not a message for anyone. 'We don't want to propose something that is not clear and objective other than winning. 'Obviously, I have seen the table, but, obviously, we are going to win. 'For us, it (Club World Cup) is the most important title at this time. It is going to be demanding without a doubt, but we want to try.'
