Aam Aadmi Party leader Paramjit Mehta's father and Bathinda hotelier Amarjit Singh Mehta was unanimously elected as the president of the Punjab Cricket Association, while two other AAP leaders, Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh and the party's Punjab general secretary Deepak Bali, who is also advisor to the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Board, were unanimously elected as secretary and vice-president, respectively.
The elections for the PCA officer bearers and apex council members were held at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA New International Stadium in Mullanpur on Saturday and all the office bearers as well Apex Council were elected unanimously. Mehta, a hotelier based in Bathinda, was earlier elected as the PCA president in 2023.
'I am grateful to the PCA members for giving me the opportunity and for being elected unopposed. My main focus in this tenure will be developing sports infrastructure in rural areas. With Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann's vision to promote sports in every part of Punjab, we will promote and spot talent through fair selection policies. PCA has always been known for its hospitality, and since the new PCA stadium will be hosting its first women's international matches as well as its first men's international match this year, we will work towards making them a historic moment. Apart from this, we will also open the PCA Club membership at the new Mullanpur Stadium in the coming months,' Amarjit Singh Mehta told The Indian Express.
Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, the richest legislator in Punjab with reported assets worth around Rs 250 crore, began his political journey in 1995 when he represented Ward 21 in the Mohali Municipal Council elections and served as the senior vice-president of the council. Singh, a former mayor of Mohali, had contested the Lok Sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib as an SAD-BJP candidate in 2014 but lost. In March 2022, Singh won the SAS Nagar Assembly constituency on an AAP ticket, defeating Congress's Balbir Singh Sidhu by 34,097 votes. Singh, who has replaced Dilsher Khanna as the association secretary, said that one of the targets of the association is a new T20 league apart from conducting village-level tournaments in Punjab.
'This is my first tenure in any capacity with the PCA. I believe the experience of being an MLA, where you serve people, will come in handy. We will aim to start a new T20 League, apart from promoting village and block-level tournaments to spot talent and promote sports in the state. PCA hosted IPL matches for the past two years and also hosted the play-offs. We will make sure that the PCA's new international stadiums are counted among India's best stadiums,' Singh told The Indian Express.
Apart from Mehta, Singh and Bali, Sunil Gupta, the incumbent PCA treasurer and the vice-chairman of the Punjab Economic Policy and Planning Board, with the rank and status of Cabinet Minister, was also unanimously elected as the PCA treasurer. Siddhant Sharma was unanimously elected as the joint secretary of the association.
Last month, Dilsher Khanna resigned from the post of PCA secretary. Khanna, 33, an alumnus of Doon School and Delhi University and also a certified pilot, was elected as the PCA secretary in 2022 when former cricketer Gulzar Inder Singh Chahal was elected as the PCA president at the association's Annual General Meeting. Chahal had resigned four months after his election, with reports of alleged irregularities during his term coming to the fore. Former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh too accused Chahal of being involved in alleged irregularities.
Post the Annual General Meeting, PCA honoured Uday Pratap Saharan, captain of winning Punjab U23 team in Col CK Nayudu Trophy, VRV Singh, coach of Punjab men's U23 team, Umesh Gill, captain of second placed Punjab U16 team in Vijay Merchant Troph, RP Singh, head coach of Punjab U16 team, Jyoti, captain of second placed Punjab U15 women's team in women's U15 One Day trophy and Yograj, head coach of Punjab women's U15 team.

Waste to electricity plant may come up at dump yard

Trichy: The govt has initiated preliminary work to expand waste-to-electricity plants to major cities in the state including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy, said municipal administration minister K N Nehru on Sunday. In Trichy, it will be considered at Ariyamangalam dump yard. He said the govt is exploring an option to retrieve plastic waste from dump yards and utilize it in road construction. "Waste mounds in dump yards in major cities that have accumulated for over five decades are being cleared using a biomining method. The waste-to-electricity plant introduced in Chennai will be expanded to other cities as a long-term solution in another 3-4 years," Nehru told reporters on the sidelines of Oraniyil Tamil Nadu campaign held in E Pudur to add new members to DMK. He said no new infrastructure projects are viable in the 47-acre Ariyamangalam dump yard for the next 15 years except for public parks since the subsurface has accumulated plastic waste for decades. Responding to a question about his constituency, Trichy West, cornering a lion's share of new projects, Nehru said all 65 wards in the city are treated equally. On opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami's remarks about Rs 1,000 monthly assistance provided to women in the state, Nehru said, "We (DMK) introduced the scheme to provide financial assistance to women heads of the family. Who is he (Palaniswami) to say that people will not get the assistance? We will conduct more camps to continue and expand the coverage. "

Maharashtra govt puts one big condition on new liquor shop licences in the state

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday said that the government has made a rule that no licences for liquor shops will be given without taking the legislature into confidence. Earlier in the day, NCP (SP) legislator Jitendra Awhad claimed that the BJP-led Mahayuti government was planning to issue 328 new liquor shop licences to tide over "financial distress". He said this would drive the state, which is a land of saints, into alcoholism. Talking to media persons in Pune, Pawar said rules are diligently followed in Maharashtra as far as liquor licences are concerned. "We have made a rule that if licences for liquor shops in the state are to be granted, it should not be done without taking the legislature into confidence," said Pawar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Dhaka - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo In other states, the number of liquor shop licences is increasing, but Maharashtra follows rules and acts in this matter systematically, he said. "Our approach is different. If a shop is to be relocated, we give permission only as per the rules, and everything happens accordingly. There's a committee that makes every such decision. If women at some places raise objections, we shut down the liquor shops," said the deputy CM. Live Events The government will take action if allegations concerning liquor shops are found to be true, he asserted. Addressing a press conference earlier in the day, NCP (SP) leader Awhad said that Maharashtra's liquor policy would drive the state, which is a land of saints, into alcoholism and cause distress to lakhs of families. He claimed that the BJP-led Mahayuti government was planning to issue licences for 328 new liquor shops across the state to "cope with the financial burden of schemes like Ladki Bahin Yojana (under which eligible women receive monthly aid of Rs 1500)". "This liquor-driven policy to fill an empty treasury is a betrayal of families. To pay the Ladki Bahin (beloved sister), this government will cheat brothers, husbands and fathers. The Devendra Fadnavis government will go down in history for selling alcohol licences instead of preserving public health," he asserted. The state of saints like Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Tukadoji Maharaj and Gadge Baba is being reduced to a marketplace of wine and whisky, the MLA from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (SP) claimed. "Today, licences that were cancelled 50 years ago are being sold at Rs 1 crore, when the same are worth Rs 15 crore. I have a list of 47 directors of firms who are making the rounds of Mantralaya (for these licences). These are the people benefiting from this corrupt system," he alleged. This government does not care if water is available in every household but there must be full supply of alcohol, he said. "If this is their vision and model of governance, then sell the Gateway of India as well for money. When the state government tried something similar in 1974, stalwarts like Mrinaltai Gorhe, Ahilyabai Rangnekar, and Madhu Dandavate led an uprising that forced a rollback. Fifty years later, this government is testing the same fire again," Awhad said. He urged citizens of the state, especially women, to come out on the streets to oppose the state government's liquor policy. He cited the alleged sale of liquor in prohibited areas in the Yeoor stretch in Thane of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, adding that excise officials were hand in glove in this racket. Incidentally, on July 8, Ajit Pawar, who holds the finance and state excise portfolios, had informed the assembly that no new liquor licences have been granted in the state since 1972 though transfers of existing licences from one location to another are permitted following due procedure. He also told the assembly there was no legal provision under existing rules that allowed municipal corporations to pass resolutions revoking liquor licences within their jurisdiction. Pawar was responding to a calling attention notice given by Panvel BJP MLA Prashant Thakur regarding the cancellation of liquor licences in Kharghar and declaring it an alcohol-free zone.
