The story: After a family tragedy, martial arts prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) leaves Beijing with his doctor mum (Ming-Na Wen) for a fresh start in New York City. She makes him promise no more fights, but he is a new kid in town facing bullies. Plus, he has a beloved four-decade lore to honour.
Karate Kid: Legends is the sixth film in The Karate Kid franchise dating from the 1984 Hollywood sleeper hit. It is the classic rite of passage of an outsider teen meeting a girl, Mia (Sadie Stanley), and attracting unwanted attention from her psychotic karate champion ex-boyfriend Conor (Aramis Knight).
Mia's dad (Joshua Jackson) owns the neighbourhood pizzeria. He was a prizefighter, and there is a cute bit of role-reversal, where Li coaches him for a comeback match to pay off his debt.
Li is otherwise the acolyte. Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan first played Shifu Han in 2010's The Karate Kid and returns as Li's revered mentor from China, while Ralph Macchio, the original Karate Kid, is now sensei Daniel LaRusso with a Netflix spin-off series Cobra Kai (2018 to 2025).
The two masters journey in to teach Li a hybrid of Han's gongfu and LaRusso's karate, which is the teen's only chance of defeating Conor in the inevitable climactic tournament.
Feature debut director Jonathan Entwistle brings together every past iteration for a remake-revival-crossover that is charming in its corniness, despite a formulaic story.
Beyond the nostalgia, it introduces an Asian hero. And 25-year-old Wang (American Born Chinese, 2023) is an appealing newcomer, who reclaims the martial arts tradition with his humorous and acrobatic moves.
Hot take: Part fan service, part generational update, there is much to like in this legacyquel.

The story: Two priests must overcome their differences and work together to free an innocent soul from the devil's grip.
Emma Schmidt is the most widely publicised case of exorcism in 20th-century American history and one of the few officially sanctioned by the Catholic Church.
An award-winning director of The Killing Of Kenneth Chamberlain (2019), another true account, David Midell researched the personal dairies, psychiatric evaluations and 1935 pamphlet Begone Satan! for The Ritual. Still, his dramatisation is like nothing so much as a parody of The Exorcist (1973).
Al Pacino at his hammiest plays the Capuchin friar Theophilus Riesinger, a glinty-eyed emissary of 'the Lord's Army' who arrives at a secluded convent in 1928 Earling, Iowa, to do furious battle with the devil. He has previous experience as an exorcist.
Father Joseph Steiger (Dan Stevens) is the young parish priest reluctantly overseeing the detailed documentation of the 23-day ritual, the straight guy to Riesinger's crusty mystic. He advocates medical intervention even when Emma (Abigail Cowen) begins levitating, ejecting excrement and speaking in supernatural tongues, generally exhibiting every symptom from the religious horror playbook by week's end.
Riesinger chides Steiger for his lack of faith.
Their debate on science, spirituality and the human condition is without a single original thought or frisson, and the self-seriousness has only the unfortunate effect of making the glum proceedings all the campier.
'I have a sister with a torn scalp and another with a crushed hand,' Steiger reports of Emma's escalating violence. If the line does not elicit laughs, the sight of said nuns, huddled in petrified terror, surely will.

Born in ghost stories, South Korea's grim reapers transform into pop culture icons

SEOUL - When the Saja Boys appeared on screen for the first time, dressed in floor-length black hanbok and wide-brimmed hats casting shadows over pale, painted faces, Ms Kang Chan-mi, a 32-year-old office worker in Seoul, immediately recognised the look. 'I knew instantly what they were,' she said. 'If you're Korean, it's almost impossible not to.' The Saja Boys, a fictional K-pop group from the new Netflix animated film K-pop Demon Hunters may appear to be just another stylish boy band debuting for a global audience. However, for many Korean viewers, their stagewear evokes something much older and far more haunting: the jeoseung saja or the traditional Korean grim reaper. The image is deeply familiar to Koreans. A pale-faced man, draped in black robes and wearing a gat - a traditional Korean hat made of horsehair and silk - has long signalled death in Korean storytelling. This is not the first time the grim reaper's look has stepped into the limelight. Most recently, on the dance competition show World Of Street Woman Fighter, the Korean crew Bumsup built a performance around the figure, donning black shirts and gat to evoke the jeoseung saja's chilling presence. In Korean television and film, grim reapers have often been reimagined as charismatic and charming figures. In the 2016 hit drama Guardian: The Lonely And Great God, actor Lee Dong-wook played a modern version of the character, trading traditional robes and a gat for a tailored black suit and fedora. The styling was contemporary, but the symbolism remained intact. Tracing the allure of Korean grim reapers So, where did this image come from? Many trace it back to a June 1980 episode of the KBS series Legend of the Hometown (unofficial title), a show known for its ghost stories. It was there that the jeoseung saja took on its now iconic appearance. 'We wanted to create a distinctly Korean image of death,' said the series producer Choi Sang-shik in a past interview. 'Since death is associated with darkness, we dressed the grim reaper in black robes and contrasted it with a pale face and jet-black lips.' But the grim reaper has not always looked this way. According to the Encyclopedia Of Korean Culture by author Kim Deok-mook, the jeoseung saja originally appeared in shamanistic rituals as a military officer, dressed in official armour. In many paintings from the Joseon era - including Gamjae Saja, which indicates one of the underworld messengers - he is depicted wearing bright red armour. He was also a figure to be feared, as his arrival marked the moment a soul was taken from the world of the living. Though he was a figure to be scared of, he was not treated with hostility. In traditional funerary rites, the reaper is regarded with solemn respect. 'Since the reaper also serves as a guide through the long and difficult journey to the afterlife, mistreating him could bring misfortune to the deceased,' Mr Kim said. 'That's why families treat him with care during rituals.' Even the number of reapers varies between tradition and pop culture. In K-pop Demon Hunters, there are five Saja Boys; in many Korean dramas and films, the jeoseung saja often appears alone, an isolated figure quietly escorting the dead. But in Korean shamanism, the number is typically three. According to Mr Kim , in a traditional funerary ritual from Hwanghae Province, families prepare three bowls of rice, three pairs of straw shoes, and three sets of spoons and chopsticks. These offerings are meant to honour the three reapers guiding the soul from this world to the next. That belief has also made its way into modern storytelling. In the hit film Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds, three grim reapers move together as a team. Not only is his Squid Game: Season 3 No. 1 on the streamer's Global Top 10 non-English shows list, animation KPop Demon Hunters – in which Lee is the antagonist as well – also holds on to its pole position on the Global Top 10 English movies chart. Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Yoo Ji-young) are members of K-pop girl group Huntrix, whose concerts double as supernatural missions where they use their music to protect the human world from demonic forces. Their biggest threat Gwi-ma (Lee), a spirit king who preys on human souls, sends his demons to defeat the hunters in the form of a boy band, the Saja Boys, fronted by Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop from K-drama Business Proposal (2022). The beautifully animated film packs in a lot of drama, action and characterisation. Huntrix are said to be inspired by K-pop girl groups Blackpink, Twice and Itzy, while boy bands BTS, Stray Kids and BigBang serve as inspiration for the Saja Boys. Its groovy soundtrack – featuring catchy tunes like Golden, Takedown and Soda Pop – has gone viral, scoring the No. 8 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the highest debuting soundtrack of 2025. It also entered at No. 1 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart. PHOTO: NETFLIX Those who have followed Squid Game since its premiere in 2021 will have burning questions, such as how the games were created and how In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) became the Frontman, the host of the vicious games. The hyperviolent thriller follows 456 contestants in a deadly underground contest where they play macabre versions of children's games until one player remains standing. The sole survivor wins a massive jackpot . Season 3 follows the aftermath of Player 456 Seong Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) failed revolt, where he is forced to continue playing the games while bearing the guilt of causing the death of his best friend. The shock factor – what the show is known for – is evident, especially in Episode 2, which involves a cruel hide-and-seek game. All hell breaks loose when the Frontman introduces a new player to the competition. The production value is top-notch and actors Lee Byung-hun, Park Sung-hoon (Player 120), Kang Ae-shim (Player 149), Jo Yu-ri (Player 222) and Im Si-wan (Player 333) are excellent. However, with only six episodes to conclude the saga, the pacing is uneven. While some key moments feel rushed, there is too much screen time devoted to the useless Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon). The subplot involving Pink Guard 011 (Park Gyu-young) was also overly long. While there is some form of closure, do not expect the third season to tie up all the loose ends. The closing scene is an eye-opener and perhaps a hint to where Squid Game is heading. Cha Eun-Woo VR Concert: Memories Cha Eun-Woo VR Concert: Memories will be showing at GV Bugis+ from July 31 to Aug 16. The South Korean actor-singer, who will enlist in the military on July 28, invites his fans to go on an immersive and intimate virtual-reality (VR) journey with him. Set against a romantic fantasy backdrop, viewers are issued individual VR headsets, which they can use to personalise their concert experience, from the locations and backgrounds to images and choreography. As lead characters in the concert, they also determine the ending they desire. Produced and powered by VR concert platform company Amaze, the visuals are rendered with near-photorealistic detail, so it is like seeing Cha in person. The special VR concert will run from July 31 to Aug 16 at GV Bugis+. Tickets are priced at $38 for Golden Village Movie Club members and $40 for non-members. Each ticket comes with a photo card and the first 300 viewers will also receive a limited-edition poster of Cha. Tickets go on sale on July 4 at 3pm via Golden Village's website and app.
