IP University to introduce orphan children quota with full fee waiver from 2025-26

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IPU) has decided to introduce an orphan children quota in its various programs, in addition to the existing Single Girl Child quota introduced last year.
The university's Academic Council has approved the introduction of this quota, effective from the academic session 2025-26. Under this quota, one additional seat will be reserved in each university schools and programs, and the selected students will be eligible for 100% fee waiver under the university's EWS scheme.
The Vice Chancellor, Padma Shri Prof (Dr) Mahesh Verma, said that the university aims to provide education to all, including orphan children who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic or some other reasons. The university will also strive to provide financial assistance to these students under various government schemes.
IP University will be one of the first universities in the country to introduce this quota. Detailed guidelines will be available on the university's website soon.
The Academic Council meeting also discussed introducing a separate PhD program for working professionals, lateral entry in MBA (Fire and Industrial Safety), and adding Spanish and other popular foreign languages to the certificate courses.
Other decisions include introducing a five-year BA-MA Philosophy program, four-year BEd Special Education programs in three new disciplines and a Post-MSc Diploma in Radiological Physics.
The university will also establish an 'In-Situ Center for Indian Knowledge System and Technology Innovation' to promote Indian knowledge traditions.
With MSc in Microbiology and some other certificate & diploma programs, Narela campus will be operational soon.

It further adds that 270,000 beads, primarily made from shell, amber, calcite, and greenstone, some strung together, were discovered. These beads range from 1 to 10 millimeters in diameter. 'A small group of 90 beads was found in the upper level of the second chamber (Structure 10.049), in connection with a rock crystal blade dagger, of whose ivory handle the beads are believed to have been a decoration,' the blog reads. The Montelirio Tholos, dated to 2875–2700 BCE via radiocarbon analysis, aligns with the Copper Age's transition to complex societies, Science Journal states. 'A multi-analytical study undertaken over the past 5 years—including a meticulous quantification of the collection, the characterization of the raw materials, radiocarbon dating and chronometric statistical modeling, morphometric analysis, phytolith analysis, experimental work and contextual analysis—reveals several previously unidentified aspects of these remarkable creations. This includes the role of the attires as sumptuary attributes heavily loaded of symbolism, used by a selected group of women of high social significance.'

WHO says all Covid-19 origin theories still open, after inconclusive study

All hypotheses on how the Covid-19 pandemic began remain open, the World Health Organization said June 27, 2025, following an inconclusive four-year investigation that was hamstrung by crucial information being withheld. The global catastrophe killed an estimated 20 million people, according to the WHO, while shredding economies, crippling health systems and turning people's lives upside-down. The first cases were detected in Wuhan in China in late 2019, and understanding where the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid came from is key to preventing future pandemics. However, a lengthy investigation launched by the UN's health agency said that pending further data, the origin of Covid and how it first spread remains elusive. "As things stand, all hypotheses must remain on the table, including zoonotic spillover and lab leak," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference, referring to the two main hypotheses as to how the pandemic began. Expert investigation An initial WHO-Chinese joint report in March 2021 concluded that the virus most likely jumped from bats to humans via an intermediate animal. It deemed a leak from Wuhan's virology laboratories -- known for their research on coronaviruses -- to be "extremely unlikely". However, that investigation faced harsh criticism for lacking transparency and access, and for not seriously evaluating the lab-leak theory. Tedros launched another investigation, setting up the Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO), comprising 27 international experts, in July 2021. Their 78-page report was published on Friday. It said the weight of available evidence suggests a spillover from animals -- either directly from bats, or through an intermediate host. However, it could not conclude with certainty where and when this happened, nor whether the Wuhan wet market was where the virus first spilled over into humans. That said, the market "appears to be the location for amplification of infection in humans", leading to widespread transmission. "Evidence for widespread infections or cases in any other countries prior to December 2019 is lacking," it added. While spillover was the best supported theory on the evidence currently available, "until further requests for information are met, or more scientific data becomes available, the origins of SARS-CoV-2 and how it entered the human population will remain inconclusive," SAGO chair Marietjie Venter said at the press conference. Lab leak theories "could not be investigated or excluded", she said, because much of the needed information had not been made available. The experts requested unpublished information from other countries, notably Germany and the United States, but without success, she said. Earlier this week, one SAGO member resigned and three others asked for their names to be removed from the report. Crucial question "Over the past five years, we have learned a lot about Covid-19 but there is one crucial question about the pandemic that we have not yet answered: how it started," Tedros said. "Despite our repeated requests, China hasn't provided hundreds of viral sequences from individuals with Covid-19 early in the pandemic, more detailed information on animals sold at markets in Wuhan, and information on work done and biosafety conditions at laboratories in Wuhan," he said. He said WHO has requested access to intelligence reports by governments around the world on the origins of Covid-19. US President Donald Trump's administration has officially embraced the lab leak theory. Moral imperative Tedros said finding out how Covid-19 started was a moral imperative for those who lost their lives in the pandemic and to prevent further outbreaks. He said the virus was continuing to evolve, take lives and leave people suffering with post-Covid conditions, or so-called long Covid. Tedros said the WHO is appealing to countries with information about the origins of Covid-19 to share information. SAGO said it would continue to evaluate any new, sound scientific evidence and update its findings accordingly.

The Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) Delhi will offer admissions to 20 postgraduate programmes through the Common University Entrance Test Postgraduate (CUET PG) scores for the academic session 2025-26. The 20 postgrauduate programmes include MBA, MCA (software engineering) or MCA, MAMC, MPT (M/N/S/C), MSc (environment management), LLM, MA (English), MEd, MTech (CSG), MTech (EG), MA (economics), PG in applied geoinformatics, MSc (yoga), MSc (medicinal chemistry and drug design), MSc (bioinformatics), MSc (molecular diagnostics), MSc (microbiology), MS (packaging technology), BEd and BEd (special education). Candidates interested in admissions to these programmes through CUET scores can apply online by July 15 with a fee of Rs 2,500 for application and counselling. Detailed information is available on the university's websites – and CUET PG scores will be used for admission to PG programmes after the merit list of national-level tests or GGSIPU Common Entrance Test (CET) and university-conducted entrance exams for affiliated programmes is exhausted. IPU, this year, has introduced an orphan children quota, in addition to the existing Single Girl Child quota introduced last year. The quota will be effective from the academic session 2025-26. Under this quota, one additional seat will be reserved in each university schools and programmes, and the selected students will be eligible for a 100 per cent fee waiver under the university's EWS scheme.
