US not taking Guatemala lightly ahead of Gold Cup semis, says Adams

LONDON: Seven-times CONCACAF Gold Cup champions the United States will not take Wednesday's semi-final against Guatemala lightly despite being overwhelming favourites, midfielder Tyler Adams said.
Guatemala, ranked number 106 in the world, have reached the semis of the tournament for the first time since 1996 after shocking former winners Canada 6-5 on penalties, while 16th ranked U.S. advanced for the 13th successive time.
"We know how strong Guatemala is. There's a reason that they're in the semi-final, so we can't take that for granted the opportunity to play them," Adams told reporters on Tuesday.
Adams also said it would be strange to play against Rubio Rubin, who represented the U.S. at youth level before switching allegiance to Guatemala.
Rubin scored the equaliser against Canada in a match that ended 1-1 before going to a shootout.
"It's always a little bit strange obviously when you play with them in the youth national team and then now, they're playing for Guatemala, and you're playing against them in a Gold Cup, but it'll be a really unique experience," Adams said.
"He's done really well for himself so it'll be exciting to play against him."
The U.S. also needed a shootout to reach the last four after drawing 2-2 with Costa Rica, and manager Mauricio Pochettino took pride in their team spirit.

Soccer-US fans can learn from unbelievable Guatemala supporters, Pochettino says

Soccer Football - International Friendly - Mexico v United States - Akron Stadium, Guadalajara, Mexico - October 15, 2024 Mauricio Pochettino coach of U.S. during the match REUTERS/Fernando Carranza (Reuters) -United States coach Mauricio Pochettino said Wednesday's 2-1 win over Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals felt like a game on the road, adding that the spirit of the opposing fans was something American supporters could learn from. Over 22,000 spectators attended the match in St. Louis and the majority were Guatemala supporters, loudly backing their team throughout the game even as Diego Luna's early brace helped the U.S. reach the final, where they face Mexico on Sunday. "The fans of Guatemala, I need to say, wow, unbelievable. It was like, to play there. And that was good for our players because it was an atmosphere we didn't expect," former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager Pochettino told reporters. Argentine Pochettino said he hoped to see the same passion from American fans when the World Cup takes place in the U.S. next year. "An unbelievable energy. That is football, that is football. When we say, the connection between the team and the fans, that's the connection we'd like to see at the World Cup. The connection that makes you fly," he said. "When we talk about culture, that is culture ... to see (Guatemala), how they fight, how the fans behave, that is an important thing that we need to learn in this country." Pochettino said that in many countries, soccer matches were seen as much more than sporting spectacles. "In a different country, you play (to) survive. You play for food. You play for pride ... it's not to enjoy, go home and laugh, that's it," he said. "The moment that we, this roster, start to live in this way, I think we have big room to improve." (AP pic) SANTA CLARA: Mexico will face the US in the Concacaf Gold Cup final after a second-half strike by Raul Jimenez earned the defending champions a 1-0 win over Honduras at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday. Mexico had the lion's share of possession, but lacked quality in the final third. They were rewarded for their efforts when 16-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora delivered a great pass to Jimenez, who fired an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar in the 50th minute to put Mexico ahead. Edson Alvarez thought he had doubled Mexico's lead three minutes later with a simple tap-in following a set piece, but the defensive midfielder's effort was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR check. Mexico are chasing a record-extending 10th Gold Cup title, while the US are eyeing an eighth crown. Luna stars as USA set up Gold Cup final clash with Mexico

MIAMI: Diego Luna scored both goals as the United States beat Guatemala 2-1 in St Louis on Wednesday to reach the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup where they will face Mexico. Raul Jimenez struck in the 50th minute as Mexico overcame Honduras 1-0 in Santa Clara, California to reach their fourth straight Gold Cup final. Luna, an exciting talent who plays for Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer, put the USA ahead in the fourth minute when a Luca de la Torre shot was parried and the 21-year-old pounced to slot home. The winger, who came up through the ranks of lower-division football in Texas, then doubled the advantage in the 15th minute with a brilliant individual goal. Luna picked up the ball in midfield and dribbled goalwards, skipping a challenge before firing home from more than 20 yards. Guatemala striker Rubio Rubin had an effort saved by USA keeper Matt Freese and then another disallowed for offside to the frustration of his team's large and noisy travelling support. Sebastian Berhalter went close to a third just before the break with a free-kick which deflected off the wall and was well saved by Kenderson Navarro. Mauricio Pochettino's USA, who came into the tournament on the back of a four-game losing streak, were under increasing pressure from a lively Guatemala after the interval. It intensified after the Central Americans scored in the 80th minute when Arquimides Ordonez dribbled into the box and 18-year-old Boston-born Olger Escobar fired home. The home fans held their breath in stoppage time when Jose Morales drilled a low shot from the edge of the box but Freese did well to get down and push the ball wide. Luna's performances will bolster his chances of making the squad for the World Cup next year even when regular starters such as Christian Pulisic return. "Every single one of these players think about it the same way I do, that this is the number one dream we had as a kid and we are going to fight to have as many chances to wear (this shirt) as we can," said Luna. The Californian, of Mexican heritage, was praised by teammate Berhalter for his two crucial goals. "He does stuff like that, scoring two goals like that in a semi-final, it is why he's him and he's one of the best players in MLS and one of the best players here," he said. Mexico, looking for a record-extending 10th Gold Cup title, were pushed all the way by an improved and tenacious Honduras but ultimately emerged victorious to set up an eighth final meeting with their North American rivals. 16-year-old Gilberto Mora, the great hope of Mexican football playing just his second game for his country, created the winning goal with some lovely footwork, as he jinked through the Honduras defence before threading a perfect pass to Jimenez. The Fulham striker made no mistake with a thundering finish to put El Tri in front at Levi's Stadium, the home of the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. Mexico had the ball in the net again after a free-kick caused chaos and Edson Alvarez turned the ball home but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
