(AP pic) SANTA CLARA: Mexico will face the US in the Concacaf Gold Cup final after a second-half strike by Raul Jimenez earned the defending champions a 1-0 win over Honduras at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on Wednesday. Mexico had the lion's share of possession, but lacked quality in the final third. They were rewarded for their efforts when 16-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora delivered a great pass to Jimenez, who fired an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar in the 50th minute to put Mexico ahead. Edson Alvarez thought he had doubled Mexico's lead three minutes later with a simple tap-in following a set piece, but the defensive midfielder's effort was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR check. Mexico are chasing a record-extending 10th Gold Cup title, while the US are eyeing an eighth crown. Argentine Pochettino said he hoped to see the same passion from American fans when the World Cup takes place in the U.S. next year. "An unbelievable energy. That is football, that is football. When we say, the connection between the team and the fans, that's the connection we'd like to see at the World Cup. The connection that makes you fly," he said. "When we talk about culture, that is culture ... to see (Guatemala), how they fight, how the fans behave, that is an important thing that we need to learn in this country." Pochettino said that in many countries, soccer matches were seen as much more than sporting spectacles. "In a different country, you play (to) survive. You play for food. You play for pride ... it's not to enjoy, go home and laugh, that's it," he said. "The moment that we, this roster, start to live in this way, I think we have big room to improve." Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, brother dies in car crash in Spain
Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: MADRID: Liverpool's Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, 28, died in a fiery car crash near Zamora in northwestern Spain with his brother, Spanish state-owned TV station said on Thursday, citing local firefighters, France 24 reported. The Spanish civil guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were found dead after their car went off a road. Police were investigating the causes. They said there were no other vehicles involved. The regional fire department of Castille-Leon, where Zamora is located, said on its website a car crashed shortly after midnight on Thursday and burst into flames, with two men, aged 28 and 25, found dead. Jota, who got married on June 28, helped Liverpool win the Premier League last season and also won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Merseyside outfit. Jota also played for Portugal's national team. Silva played with Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions. Jota arrived at Anfield from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club in all competitions.
