6 arrested for ‘kidnap-murder' of man in Imphal West
The arrests were made on Monday.
Kadir's body was found at the residence of Heikrujam Prafulo Singh (35) at Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai a couple of days after he had gone missing. Prafulo was arrested and remanded to custody until June 23. His detention led to the arrest of five others, including three members of the Arambai Tenggol organisation in the connection.
The arrested Arambai Tenggol members were identified as Longjam Henson, alias Naocha Meitei (24), Thounaojam Ashok Singh (20), and Huidrom Shyamsunder Singh (30).
Two civilians — Heikrujam Premchand Puremba (28) and Sapam Dayani Devi (42) — were also arrested. All six suspects appeared before a magistrate and were remanded to police custody until June 23.
So far, nine people — six Arambai Tenggol members and three civilians — have been arrested in connection with the case. Authorities have also seized five vehicles during the investigation, including three cars, one pickup truck, and one scooter.

The probe into Kadir's disappearance and subsequent discovery of his body at a residence near Mayai Lambi College Gate in Imphal West district is still ongoing.
The United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC), Manipur, has strongly condemned the killing of Abdul Kadir, demanding justice, capital punishment for the accused, and the transfer of the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Describing the crime as an "inexcusable violation of the right to life, dignity, and protection of vulnerable citizens" under the Constitution, UMPC expressed outrage over the killing of Kadir, a mentally challenged civilian.
"While we appreciate the prompt action of the Manipur Police in apprehending several individuals, including members of the so-called vigilante group Arambai Tenggol, it is imperative that justice be delivered swiftly and firmly," UMPC stated in a press statement.
It urged the authorities to immediately arrest all remaining perpetrators and charge them under stringent provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS).
It also demanded that the case be fast-tracked through a special court to ensure a speedy trial and justice, and that the state govt provide immediate ex-gratia relief and rehabilitation support to the victim's family.
Additionally, it called for a complete ban and legal scrutiny of unlawful armed vigilante groups, transparency in the investigation and judicial proceedings to restore public trust, and enhanced community policing and protective measures for mentally challenged, differently-abled, and marginalised individuals in the state.
While appealing for solidarity and justice for Abdul Kadir, UMPC reiterated its unwavering stance against violence, lawlessness, and human rights violations. The organisation pledged to stand by the victim's family in their fight for justice.
In light of the potentially volatile situation, MLA Wangoi AC, Kh Loken, has urged the public to maintain peace and assured them that strict action will be taken against the culprits.
The Manipur Federal Organisation also condemned the killing and pledged support for any movement launched by the joint action committee formed in connection with the case.

‘Penalty for power theft unfairly high & out of reach too'
Bhopal: In a rare occasion, the Opposition Congress joined hands with the ruling BJP MLAs in the House on Monday, demanding that the penalty in power theft cases be reduced. Raising the issue through a call attention motion, Ramesh Khatik of the BJP said that a compound interest of 16 percent is charged on a person accused of electricity theft. If the accused person pays the electricity bill five years later, he ends up paying more than double the bill. The case is put up in court and in Lok Adalats, the penalty is waived. Khatik questioned why the penalty can't be waived in the normal course if the person charged with electricity theft fails to turn up in Lok Adalat to settle the case for some reason. Khatik, who said that farmers and domestic consumers are the worst affected due to the excessive penalty of 16 percent compound interest on the bill, noted that no bank or financial institution gives so much interest as recovered from the consumers. He further mentioned that consumers, particularly farmers, often come to know of the case registered against them for electricity theft and put up in court quite late, and they sometimes don't receive notice for the Lok Adalat either, he added. Several MLAs from both sides joined Khatik in demanding that the penalty imposed on the bill in cases of electricity theft should be waived. Khatik, however, pointed out that the Lok Adalat takes place in Bhopal, and the cases at other places are settled online, which may not be convenient for many consumers, particularly farmers. The Electricity Regulatory Authority may also be informed about the debate in the House and asked to reconsider the provision of a hefty penalty on electricity theft cases. The minister, while maintaining that law is law, agreed to take up the issue with MP Electricity Authority as more and more members from both sides joined Khatik in support of his demand.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against an associate professor in the Hindi department of Lucknow University following a viral social media post targeting Bageshwar Dham's Pt Dhirendra Krishna Shastri. The post, by professor Ravikant on July 31, 2023, led to a complaint from members of the Bageshwar Dham Jan Seva Samiti. Chhatarpur SP Agam Jain told TOI that the FIR was registered late Sunday night under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with statements that may hurt sentiments, spread false information, or promote enmity. The section carries a punishment of up to three years in jail. "There is no immediate provision for arrest, but action will be taken if required," he said. The controversy comes days after a July 28, 2023, incident in Chhatarpur's Lavkush Nagar area, where police intercepted an ambulance associated with Bageshwar Dham. Several women were found inside the vehicle and were later questioned by police. Dumper rams into scooter, car; two hurt
Ahmedabad: A dumper rammed into a scooter and a car near Godrej Garden City railway overbridge on Monday morning, leaving a 49-year-old woman with serious leg injuries. The dumper driver fled the scene after the crash but was later arrested by the city traffic police. An empty liquor bottle was reportedly found in the vehicle. According to city traffic police, around 11.15am, the dumper was coming down the overbridge at speed when it hit a scooter and a four-wheeler stopped at the Godrej Garden City signal. Padma Patel, a resident of Sardar Dham Society in Gota, was riding pillion on the scooter. She fell to the ground, and the truck's front tyre ran over her right leg, causing severe injury. The rider, Neelam Patel, sustained minor injuries. Both women were rushed to a private hospital, where Padma remains under treatment but is conscious. The dumper also damaged a car owned by a city resident, Ashwinkumar Prajapati. Locals reported that the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled. When residents and police inspected the truck, they found an empty liquor bottle inside.
