‘Big Bang Theory' Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' Ordered to Series at HBO Max

Yahoo4 days ago
The 'Big Bang Theory' spinoff 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe' has officially been greenlit at HBO Max, Variety has learned.
The was originally announced as being in development back in April 2023. As previously reported, the cast of the series is made up of 'Big Bang Theory' alums Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie. The series hails from co-creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady.

'We're excited to be continuing the legacy of 'The Big Bang Theory.' Much like the original series, this new chapter wouldn't be possible without the vision and storytelling brilliance of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, as well as Zak Penn, who has brought fresh insight and a distinctive voice to an already exceptional creative team,' said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content.
HBO Max has also officially confirmed plot details for the show for the first time. The logline states:
'Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from 'The Big Bang Theory.' As the title implies, things don't go well.'
'I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone. Something the characters on 'The Big Bang Theory,' would have loved, hated, and argued about,' Lorre said.
The series is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Lorre is under an overall deal. Lorre, Penn, and Prady are also executive producers.
'I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from 'Big Bang Theory' would watch,' Penn said. 'I couldn't resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn't be more honored to be working with these amazing people.'
This will now be the fourth show in the 'Big Bang' universe. Aside from the mothership show, which ran for 12 highly-rated seasons on CBS, the prequel 'Young Sheldon' wrapped up its own seven-season run at the broadcast network in May 2024. A spinoff of that show, 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage' starring Montana Jordan and Emily Osment, debuted on CBS on Oct. 17, 2024. This also marks the first series pickup announced since Max officially rebranded (or re-rebranded) itself as HBO Max.
'The process of writing this show with Chuck and Zak has been damn fun, and I'm certain that joy will come through the screen,' Prady said. 'Putting characters we loved from 'The Big Bang Theory' into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology that those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.'
'Chuck and Bill have given us one of the most enduring comedies of our time with 'The Big Bang Theory,' and we can't wait to see the universe continue with this new series,' added Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. 'With the help of Zak — a masterful storyteller — this next iteration promises to capture the essence of what fans loved about the original series, but with a completely fresh twist. We thank our partners HBO Max for joining us on this next adventure.'
Speaking at a panel at the Banff World Media Festival in June, Lorre teased that the new show would be quite the departure from 'The Big Bang Theory' in terms of its look onscreen.
'There's a lot of CGI,' Lorre revealed. 'There's a lot of special technical stuff that — you know, for me in my career, a big production number was two people sitting on a couch, drinking coffee! This is different. This is trying to incorporate some of that world of science fiction/fantasy into a comedy. And I'm completely out of my element, which is what I wanted. Which is what I was hoping to do, something that I had no experience with. And maybe I can learn as we go.'

Twitter reacts as Donald Trump crashes Chelsea's Club World Cup celebration

Chelsea FC clinched a stunning 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to claim the FIFA Club World Cup title at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. But it wasn't just the Blues' on-pitch dominance that got fans talking. U.S. President Donald Trump, who presented the trophy to Chelsea captain Reece James, made headlines by lingering front and center during the team's celebratory moment, defying the usual protocol of stepping aside. The unexpected move sparked a frenzy on Twitter, with fans, pundits, and even players reacting to the bizarre scene. Here's a deep dive into how Twitter exploded, complete with embedded tweets, and what it means for Chelsea's historic win. Chelsea's Triumph Meets Trump's Photobomb Chelsea's victory was a masterclass, with Cole Palmer scoring twice and assisting Joao Pedro's goal to secure a 3-0 upset against the European champions, PSG. The match, part of the newly expanded 32-team Club World Cup, was a landmark moment for the London club, marking their first-ever title in the revamped tournament. But as Reece James prepared to lift the trophy, Trump's refusal to step off the podium turned the celebration into a viral spectacle. Typically, dignitaries hand over the trophy and exit to let the team bask in their glory. Not this time. Trump, joined by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, stayed put, grinning broadly as Chelsea players celebrated around him. The awkwardness was palpable, with players like James and Palmer visibly confused. Twitter users didn't hold back, flooding the platform with memes, hot takes, and hilarious commentary. Twitter's Reaction The internet lit up as soon as Trump planted himself in Chelsea's spotlight. Fans shared a mix of amusement, disbelief, and irritation, turning the moment into a viral sensation. @StokeyyG2 posted, 'The moment Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup trophy alongside Donald Trump…🤣' alongside an image of Trump grinning next to Chelsea's squad, racking up 7 million views. The viral post captured the absurdity, with fans retweeting it thousands of times for its raw reaction to the surreal scene. View Tweet @WolfRMFC shared, 'I'm actually dying at this video Chelsea players were waiting for trump to leave but he didn't 🤣' with a clip of Cole Palmer looking confused and Reece James seemingly asking, 'Are you gonna leave?' The video became a fan favorite, amplifying the awkwardness of Trump's podium presence. View Tweet @NakulX tweeted, 'Absolutely dying at Donald Trump in the centre of Chelsea lifting the Club World Cup. Cole Palmer looking at DT confused is killing me 😂' with a close-up of Palmer's puzzled expression, resonating with fans who found the scene hilarious and bizarre, earning thousands of likes. View Tweet @RT_com posted, 'Trump photobombs Chelsea's trophy celebration Shrugs off FIFA prez gesturing for him to step off stage Harmless fun or 'stole players' moment'?' with a poll offering 'Harmless fun' or 'Stole the moment' as options, inviting mixed responses as fans debated whether Trump's antics were a lighthearted cameo or disrespectful. View Tweet Cole Palmer, the match's MVP, added fuel to the Twitter fire by admitting his confusion in a post-match interview: 'I knew he was going to be here, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yeah.' Reece James, meanwhile, kept it diplomatic, saying Trump 'congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.' When is 'Superman' streaming? Here's our best guess

"Superman," surely one of the most anticipated summer movies of 2025, has arrived. As the first movie from James Gunn's DCU project, David Corenswet's Man of Steel has a lot of weight on his shoulders, but early signs suggest that critics and fans are on board with this more hopeful version of the Last Son of Krypton. As of writing, the movie's landed an 82% critics score and a 95% from fans on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, with praise coming for the ensemble, the warm and fun feel, and a scene-stealing turn from Supes' four-legged friend, Krypto. In her "Superman" review, TG's own Alix Blackburn called it "a caped comeback to celebrate," and a movie that feels both "fresh and faithful" to DC's iconic hero. And, having seen the movie myself, I'd agree: "Superman" is a strong statement of intent for the DCU. It's a charming popcorn blockbuster and a movie that I'm sure countless Superman fans will love (even if it is a tad messy and is maybe juggling one too many moving parts). The movie takes us three years into this particular Superman's run, and sees him tangling with tech billionaire (and noted Superman hater) Lex Luthor (a brilliant Nicholas Hoult), who's determined to see the Man of Tomorrow gone for good. It's definitely a movie that you should experience on the big screen, in my opinion, but if you'd prefer to wait to stream it, we unfortunately do not yet have a "Superman" streaming date just yet. However, here's my best guess at when I think we might be able to watch the new release at home. At the time of writing, the only way to see "Superman" is by heading to your nearest movie theater, and that's unlikely to change for a while yet. After all, the movie only just came to the big screen on Friday, July 11. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The first place you'll be able to stream it at home will surely be via premium video-on-demand (PVOD) storefronts like Amazon or Apple TV. Like I said above, we don't currently know when "Superman" will make its way to any streaming services. However, being a Warner Bros. movie, we can expect the movie will first be available on Warner Bros. Discovery's newly-renamed streamer, HBO Max. And if I had to guess when we might be able to watch the DCU's first movie at home, I'd wager James Gunn's "Superman" movie would arrive on HBO Max at the end of September 2025. That guess is based on the typical length of time we've waited for new releases to hit the streamer. For example, Ryan Coogler's hugely popular thriller "Sinners" came to HBO Max on July 4, which was 78 days after it first hit theaters. That's the same number of days we waited for "A Minecraft Movie", "Companion", and "Mickey 17" to hit HBO Max, too. So, 78 days seems like the magic number when it comes to Warner Bros. movies, which is why I think we won't see "Superman" soar onto the small screen until the fall. Counting off 78 days from the movie's release day would be Friday, September 26, 2025, and seeing as HBO Max's big movie drops (like those I've listed above) have happened on Fridays, I think that's a pretty compelling guess. Of course, I'll just stress once more that this is purely speculation, as we do not have a confirmed "Superman" streaming date at the time of writing. Plus, if the movie proves to be a box office smash, there's always the chance it remains in theaters a little longer. As soon as we hear anything about the streaming future of "Superman," we'll be sure to share that info here. And if you'd like to settle down in front of another movie while you wait, be sure to check out our guide to the best movies on HBO Max for tons of top streaming choices.

Bethesda Wants to Meet ‘Fallout' Hype With Show Tie-Ins and New Games

If you're a fan of Prime Video's Fallout show and the games it's based on, it sounds like Bethesda's getting ready to capitalize on its current and future success. Talking to Variety, Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush teased that game's team and the creative forces behind the series have discussed 'lining things up with the seasonal releases of the show.' The implication is some in-game tie-ins to the show, maybe skins for the key characters or an in-game event reminiscent of certain episodes, similar to what Fortnite does with major properties on a regular basis. Timeline-wise, there's a 200-year gap between 76 (set in the past) and the show ('furthest in the future'), and the developers are intentionally keeping any overlap 'pretty simple.' Rush vaguely noted the two projects 'go together really well,' so expect them to link up eventually. For the fans of Fallout's single-player offerings, which have been nonexistent in the past decade, you might be getting something, too. In a recent episode of the Friends Per Second Podcast, VGC journalist Jordan Middler claimed 'multiple projects' for the post-apocalyptic series are in development, including 'as far as I'm aware, that one you're all wanting.' That last comment suggests a remaster of 2008's Fallout 3, which was mentioned in Microsoft's leaked documents from 2023 alongside a remaster of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's a mystery as to what those other projects could be, save for one likely being Fallout 5. Middler indicated that most-desired project is several years away, so it'll be some time before anything concrete comes. Luckily, season two of Fallout is just a few months away, hitting Prime Video sometime in December. Want more io9 news?
