BMW M2 CS sets new Nürburgring lap record

TimesLIVE3 days ago
The new BMW M2 CS has set a new lap record for compact cars around the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife track.
With a lap time of seven minutes 25.5 seconds, the BMW blitzed the iconic German track more than seven seconds faster than the previous record holder, the Audi RS3, which achieved 7:33.123 a year ago.
The new record was set by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger on April 11, six weeks before the latest M2 CS had its official unveiling at the Villa d'Este concours at Lake Como in Italy.
Impressively, the new record is a full 13 seconds faster than the 7:38.7 set by Weidinger in the previous M2 in April 2023. The big improvement is attributed to the M2 CS gaining power and shedding weight.
The BMW M2 CS is 30kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic in parts of the body, and forged M light-alloy wheels.
The high-revving 3.0 l six-cylinder inline M TwinPower Turbo engine was also boosted to produce 390kW of power and 650Nm, respective improvements of 37kW and 50Nm over the old unit.
The M2 CS sends its muscle power to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M Sport differential for a claimed 0-100km/h sprint in 3.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than a standard M2. The top speed of the M2 CS, which comes with the M Driver's Package as standard, is electronically limited to 302km/h.
A chassis tweak sees the special model getting a ride height lowered by 8mm and special suspension tuning to improve handling. The mapping of the Dynamic Stability Control and M Dynamic Mode are optimised for racetrack use.
The vehicle comes standard with track tyres (275/35 ZR19 at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear) but owners can specify more aggressive ultra-track tyres or standard sport tyres.
To be produced in limited numbers, the new BMW M2 CS will be available in SA from the second quarter of 2026, with pricing not yet confirmed.
The fastest BMW production car around the Nürburgring remains the M4 CSL with a lap time of 7:18.137.

Norris wins home British Grand Prix

SILVERSTONE - Lando Norris won a treacherous rain-hit British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg took third for the veteran German's first ever podium in 239 races. Briton Norris returned to a rapturous reception from his home fans as he moved to within eight points of Piastri in the drivers' standings. "It's beautiful, everything I ever dreamed of, this is everything I wanted to achieve, aside from winning the championship this is as good as it gets," beamed Norris. Piastri, who finished less than seven seconds behind Norris, threw away the win after the Australian was hit with a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement. As last week's heatwave gave way to a more typical British summer's day -- spells of blue sky mixed with torrential showers -- drivers had to keep their wits about them with puddles forming on the track. And Norris emerged from the chaos all smiles as he added to his wins already this season in Austria, Monaco and Australia. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton came in fourth ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Piastri fell foul of the stewards when braking heavily before the safety car peeled off, a decision that left Piastri feeling robbed. "I'm not going to say much, I don't want to get myself in trouble," he said in the post-race interview. "Apparently, you can't brake behind the safety car anymore," he added. For Hulkenberg, 37, this was a day to remember as he climbed the podium for the first time since joining the F1 grid way back in 2010. "Podium - P3 baby!" said his ecstatic race engineer on the team radio after he crossed the line. "I don't think I can comprehend what we've just done," replied the German. Pierre Gasly's Alpine took sixth, with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Alex Albon (Williams), Fernando Alonso in the other Aston and George Russell (Mercedes) rounding out the top 10. nr/lp

Norris wins wet and chaotic home British Grand Prix

Lando Norris won his home British Grand Prix for the first time in a McLaren one-two with Formula One leader Oscar Piastri on a wet and chaotic Sunday afternoon littered with safety cars, crashes and incident. Nico Hulkenberg took an astonishing third place for Sauber, the German veteran making up 16 places to shed his unwanted record of the most starts without a podium in Formula One history -- Sunday being his first in 239 starts. Piastri was handed a 10-second penalty for a safety car infringement that ultimately cost him the win and allowed Norris to slash the Australian's advantage to eight points at the midpoint of the season.

‘Rarely been so angry': Bayern boss Kompany seethes over Musiala injury

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany said he was furious after Jamal Musiala sustained a horrific injury during the first half of their Club World Cup quarterfinal defeat by Paris St Germain in Atlanta on Saturday. The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in added time before the break after a collision in PSG's penalty area. As Musiala challenged defender William Pacho for the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left ankle, twisting it at an alarming angle and leaving him lying in agony on the pitch. 'I've rarely been so angry at halftime, not against my players. There's many things in life that are important, much more important than this. But in the end, for these guys it's their life,' Kompany told reporters after the 2-0 loss. Wishing him a speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹 — Manlike Khaled (@MK_CFC24) July 6, 2025 'And someone like Jamal lives for this and he came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless... 'When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment is not the result. I understand this is football. But it's the fact that it happened to someone who enjoys the game so much is also very important for us.' Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher. The German daily Bild reported he could be sidelined for up to five months. Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer said Donnarumma's dive was 'risky' and that he had spoken to his Italian counterpart after the incident. 'You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a teammate,' he added. 'So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want — because it was half time anyway — don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.' 'After that, he went over to Jamal... Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently.' After the match, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: 'All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal.'
