Three Including Two Nuns Arrested in Chhattisgarh After Bajrang Dal Alleges 'Religious Conversion'

New Delhi: Following a protest by members of the Bajrang Dal, the Chhattisgarh police on Saturday (July 26) arrested two Catholic nuns from the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI) at the Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh on Saturday. The two nuns and a young man were arrested while accompanying three women aged between 18 and 19 from Narayanpur district. The were charged for offences including human trafficking and religious conversion under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act, 1968, reported The NewsMinute. The man was identified as Sukhman Mandavi, a resident of Narayanpur, who was arrested along with two nuns – Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis – who are originally from Kerala. The TNM report said that according to Father Sebastian Poomattam, Vicar General of the Raipur Archdiocese, the nuns were accompanying the women to place them in convents in Agra for domestic work. "These women were being offered jobs as kitchen helpers with a monthly salary between Rs 8,000 and Rs 10,000. They had the consent letters from their parents and were all above 18 years of age," said Fr Poomattam. The protest by Bajrang Dal members took place after a ticket examiner questioned the group and the railway police detained them. "The girls and one man entered the platform where the nuns were waiting. The examiner asked about their tickets, and they said the nuns had them. Soon after, the examiner informed local Bajrang Dal members, who arrived in large numbers within minutes," said Fr Poomattam. After the FIR was registered against the three people on the insistence of Bajrang Dal members, the women were sent to a government shelter while the two nuns and the man were sent to judicial custody till August 18. Sister Asha Paul, a nun from the Congregation of the Holy Family in Delhi, alleged that no church representatives were allowed to meet the detained nuns and that there is reason to suspect that the young women were coerced into changing their statements to say that they were being taken against their will. "We have all the evidence of parental consent forms, identification, and documentation that proves no force or conversion was involved," said sister Paul. Christian community condemns arrests The incident has led to members of the Christian community strongly condemning the arrests. "Priests have been arrested on fabricated charges. This is yet another example. Mob violence, police cases, and attacks on church run institutions are becoming alarmingly frequent. The silence or complicity of BJP led state governments has only emboldened such groups," the TNM report quoted a priest as saying after the incident. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal has written to the union home minister and the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh demanding strict action. "It is deeply disturbing that self proclaimed vigilantes can instigate communal tension and make baseless accusations of conversion and trafficking without any legal foundation. Despite clear documentation and parental consent, the authorities have chosen to keep the nuns and the man in custody, reportedly under political pressure. This is a clear miscarriage of justice and an attack on the rights of minority communities," says the letter written by Venugopal.

Thane Travel Firm Owner Booked For Duping Agent, Students Of Over Rs 15 Lakh

Thane: Police have registered a case against a travel company owner in Maharashtra's Thane district for allegedly cheating a travel sub-agent and 250 students of Rs 15.37 lakh in a flight ticket booking fraud, an official said on Monday. The accused operated the travel business from Khadakpada area in Kalyan. The sub-agent, who is the complainant in the case, had entrusted the accused with arranging flight tickets for 500 students from an engineering college in Mumbai's Chembur area who were scheduled to travel to Delhi, the official from Khadakpada police station said. The accused collected a total amount of Rs 29,78,500 for booking flight tickets in batches. Initially, the accused delivered tickets for the first batch of 250 students, which helped him win the confidence of the complainant and the college authorities. "However, for the remaining 250 students, no tickets were provided. Despite multiple reminders and follow-ups for either the tickets or a refund, the accused did not respond," the official said, adding the fraud took place over the last 10 months. The loss incurred in the second phase of the bookings amounted to Rs 15,37,500, following which the sub-agent approached the police, the official said. "We have registered an FIR against the owner of the travel company based in Kalyan under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)," he said.

Supreme Court quashes FIR against shuttler Lakshya Sen in birth certificate forgery case

The Supreme Court Monday quashed the FIR against badminton player Lakshya Sen, his family members, and his coach over allegations of fabricating the birth certificates of Sen and his brother. Granting the relief, a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar said that continuation of criminal proceedings in the matter would amount to an abuse of the process of the court. On February 19, 2025, the Karnataka High Court rejected the petitions by Sen, his family and coach, U Vimal Kumar, following which they approached the top court. Issuing notice in the matter, the SC had on February 25, 2025, stayed further proceedings in the matter. The complainant in this case, who runs a badminton academy, alleged in 2022 that Vimal Kumar, a badminton coach at the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, colluded with the parents of Lakshya Sen and his brother and forged birth certificate documents in 2010 to allow their participation in tournaments restricted to specific age groups. The complainant alleged that birth certificates were fabricated to claim government benefits after participating in the tournaments. He produced certain documents obtained by way of RTI in support of his argument. In 2022, the police registered a case under sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged record) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, the investigation was not concluded after the Karnataka High Court granted an interim stay. While refusing the petition to quash the proceedings against Sen and others, the HC observed that the authenticity of the documents produced before the court was not challenged. 'When prima facie materials are placed on record which constitute the offences, I do not find any reason either to stall the investigation or to quash the initiation of criminal proceedings. There are sufficient materials that are placed before the Court by the complainant, which are the documents that were obtained under the Right to Information Act from the appropriate authority. Under such circumstances, I do not find any reason to entertain the petitions,' it said. Lakshya Sen, a former junior World No 1, has won medals at various international events, including the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and is also a recipient of the Arjuna Award. His father D K Sen is also a badminton coach.
