Samsung plans to launch its trifold smartphone by the end of 2025

Engadget10-07-2025
In January Samsung teased an all new Galaxy Z trifold device, but no mention of it was made during its Unpacked event yesterday. However, the company now says that does indeed plan to release a smartphone with three displays by the end of 2025, acting head of device experience TM Roh told The Korea Times .
"We are working hard on a trifold smartphone with the goal of launching it at the end of this year," said Roh. "We are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not decided its name. As the product nears completion, we are planning to make a final decision soon." Along with that confirmation, an unnamed executive told Android Authority much the same thing.
Last month, Samsung teased the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ultra, but the smartphone shown in the image appeared to have two screens like other Z Fold models. That made us wonder what would be "Ultra" with the device, as the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 has most of the Galaxy S25 Ultra's key features. Other rumors have it that the trifold device could be called the Galaxy G Fold due to the hinge's shape.
Samsung wouldn't be first to market with a trifold phone. Huawei has that, er, honor with the Mate XT, an accordion-style device that starts at an eye-watering $2,800.

Samsung DeX turns the Galaxy Z Flip 7 into a pocket-sized PC, but it's missing one key feature

TL;DR The new Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the first in Samsung's clamshell foldable lineup to support Samsung DeX, turning it into a compact, portable PC. DeX provides a full desktop experience on an external monitor and works with a wired connection, even when the phone is closed. While a powerful addition, it lacks the ability to use the cover screen as a touchpad, a feature found on competing Razr phones. Samsung's clamshell folding phones have always been true flagships in terms of specs and performance, but they've lagged behind their larger book-style counterparts in one key area: productivity. For years, the Galaxy Z Flip line has lacked Samsung DeX support, preventing users from turning them into portable PCs. That discrepancy ends with the new Galaxy Z Flip 7, which now becomes Samsung's most compact phone that can double as a portable PC. Samsung DeX is a desktop mode experience integrated into One UI. Instead of mirroring the screen, Samsung phones with DeX support show a desktop-like interface on an external display, complete with a taskbar that displays apps, notifications, and system information on the bottom. DeX mode forces apps to launch in floating windows with PC-like title bars containing controls to minimize, maximize, or close the window. Samsung introduced DeX to its flagship Galaxy S series in 2017, later expanding the feature to its flagship Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Z Fold lineups. Due to thermal concerns, Samsung chose not to enable DeX on any of its previous Galaxy Z Flip devices. However, the company has ostensibly addressed these issues in the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which explains its long-awaited debut on the clamshell foldable. C. Scott Brown / Android Authority When Samsung announced DeX support for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 last week, there was some confusion stemming from the wording in the company's press release. There were questions about whether the Galaxy Z Flip 7 supports wired DeX and if the feature works while the device is folded. Having tested this on my review unit, I can confirm the answer to both questions is yes. You can plug the Galaxy Z Flip 7 into an external display or smart glasses to launch DeX, even without unfolding the phone (as long as you unlock it). From what I can tell, the device offers the full, uncompromised DeX experience, putting it on par with the Galaxy S and Z Fold series. Unfortunately, Samsung didn't enable the DeX touchpad on the cover screen, which is a missed opportunity in my opinion. While too small for many apps, the cover screen is the perfect size for a trackpad, and the Z Flip 7's compactness makes it more suitable for this role than any other Samsung phone. The fact that Motorola's Razr lineup offers this very feature makes Samsung's omission all the more disappointing. To be fair, newer Razr phones lack a wired desktop mode, giving the Galaxy Z Flip 7 an edge in that department. Most people aren't aware of how powerful their phones are, simply because the software often limits that potential. DeX is a feature that truly makes Samsung phones shine, even if it has some rough edges compared to traditional desktops. However, the future of Android's desktop experience looks bright. With Google working to combine Chrome OS and Android into a single platform, the days of a subpar desktop experience are numbered. Hopefully, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will still be going strong when those platform-level improvements finally roll out. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . iPhone 17 Pro display might be a little tougher after all

Early rumors 'cancelling' Apple's new display tech look to have been reversed What's happened? The iPhone 17 Pro range looks set to pack a less reflective, more scratch-resistant display when launched later this year. The technology was reportedly scrapped around May this year due to production issues, but these have now been resolved by Apple's suppliers. Macrumors is reporting that new screen technology, which was first tipped in 2024, is only coming to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, meaning the iPhone 17 and 17 Air will miss out. Recommended Videos This is important because other rivals, such as Samsung, have come out with new anti-reflective layers on smartphones such as the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This phone uses the new Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2 to make screens 75% less reflective in bright sunlight. This new tech from Apple will make the new iPhone Pro range more durable compared to Ceramic Shield, Apple's previous robust glass-ceramic material, used on recent smartphones from Apple. Why else do I need to know? Apple debuted its Ceramic Shield on the iPhone 12 range in 2020, but was used on all models, not just the Pro and Pro Max. The new supplier for this tech is unknown, although Corning manufactured the Ceramic Shield. Using the more durable layer on Pro range would help Apple justify the premium price tag of its new higher-end phones. While smartphones screens are much more visible in bright sunlight, compared to early models, the new tech would still be a strong reason to upgrade. Making displays less reflective can cause images on the screen to look less vibrant, so it will be interesting to see how Apple overcomes this. OK, what's next? It's almost certain that Apple will debut the new iPhone range in early September this year. The new Pro models are also set to include and improved 12GB of RAM and a high-end 48MP telephoto lens (meaning all three rear cameras would pack this resolution), as well as a rectangular camera bump to house the lenses.
