Tony Bloom's Hearts endgame is to win the Premiership as Celtic and Rangers told when they should be 'worried'
Adam Virgo washed his club kit at home and lost out to uni students for a parking space at training.
That was the life of a Brighton captain before Tony Bloom took over.
So when Bloom sat him down to outline plans for the Seagulls taking flight to the Premier League' s higher reaches, Virgo admits he found the idea totally fanciful.
That 2009 chat was, however, just a taster of the Bloom-inspired rise of his beloved Brighton from languishing in League One to playing in Europe.
Little wonder that ex- Celtic defender Virgo warns against dismissing Bloom's boast of disrupting Old Firm domination with Hearts.
The billionaire bettor owns a 29 per cent Jambos stake, has trusted consultant James Franks on the board and his renowned Jamestown Analytics aiding recruitment. Virgo reckons that all adds up to Hearts mounting a serious title challenge in years to come – even if they might not dare believe it.
He said: 'The vision Tony had for Brighton was to be challenging at the top end of the Premier League.
'And when he talked to us, I kind of had the feeling: 'You must be mad.'
'We played at Withdean, the athletics stadium. But he referenced plans for what's now the Amex.
'He wanted Brighton to have the top training ground in the country.
'Go there now and it's state-of-the-art stuff. But back then, I thought: 'Yeah, good one!'
'Bear in mind, when we had this conversation I shared a gym and canteen with Sussex University students and couldn't find a space to park my car. I'd walk into the gym area, reception says: 'Who are you?' – and I have to explain I captain the club!
'Sometimes, we couldn't train on the pitches because of a uni game so we went to public parks.
'There was no way I could envisage things happening as quickly as Tony wanted it to.
'But he has done it in all aspects of business – betting, horse racing and now football.
'When he sets out to do something, he'll make it clear. That makes this an exciting time for Hearts.'
Virgo reckons Bloom will pay strict attention to the smallest of details to make gains.
He said: 'Tony called me one night and said: 'Adam, I'm taking over the club' but didn't give much detail.
'He wanted a meeting with me and (vice-captain) Nicky Forster. We sat down for coffee and he wanted to know EVERY detail of the excuses us players had for our performances.
'These might be minor things in the world of football these days.
'But every day we'd take our kit home and wash it. We never had a pre-match meal ... it went on and on. Nicky and I rhymed them off.
'Tony fixed everything. A catering company came in, we had breakfast and we'd go to the gym where food was prepared for us before travelling to a home game.
'Small details made a huge difference from a players' perspective.'
Virgo grew to know poker player Bloom well, personally and professionally, before and after leaving the club. That means he has seen the 55-year-old operate with genuine, charming style and at his ruthless, business best.
Virgo said: 'Tony's end goal is to win the Scottish Premiership.
'Celtic and Rangers have won every league since 1985 so it's difficult for him to say that. But look at Brighton where he's looking to cement them as a top-six club.
'Once they got to the Premier League, the first couple of years was about just staying there. He then moved Chris Hughton on straight away – a massive decision on a very well-respected manager.
'Then he brings in Graham Potter who he found after a year at Swansea and got the ball rolling further up the league.
'Then he goes to Sassuolo for Roberto De Zerbi who, unless you're a European connoisseur, you wouldn't know much about. For a season-and-a-half they're arguably the best team in the league to watch.
'He then takes the biggest punt of all. Fans may think: 'Bloody hell, what's going on here? We've employed a 32-year-old!'
'Under the youngest manager in Premier League history in Fabian Hurzeler, they finish eighth! Tony's never afraid to stick his neck out and go down a different path.
'I know Tony the businessman and Tony the father, husband and family man. He's kind-hearted and, when you meet him, he's polite. But there's another side where he's had to make big decisions to change the club and get the right people in like Paul Barber.'
Virgo expects the Gorgie faithful to warm to Bloom's input and upfront style.
'Tony will have put so much work in on Hearts before he'd have done anything,' the 42-year-old said. 'He's a businessman but a man of the people. He'll go and sit in the crowd at an away end.
'There's transparency. He'll make time to be at meetings with the supporters every few months. He'll talk to them, let them know where he stands on things.
'Some chairmen don't say enough, others too much. Tony has that balance. I don't think Rangers and Celtic can be worried right now.
'This is going to be a process of certainly a few years. But I'd be amazed if you didn't quickly see improvements and results, by way of style of football or players sold for decent money. And that's just the start.'

INSIDE SPORT: Timing of the Thomas Partey charges is talk of the Premier League... and why it's a big week for the ECB
Eyebrows have been raised across the Premier League at the timing of the Crown Prosecution Service's decision to charge the now former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey with five counts of rape. The Ghana international, who denies the charges, was initially arrested in July 2022 — three years ago — but continued to be a key influence for the Gunners. The charges landed just three days after the expiration of his Arsenal contract, which has not been renewed despite continuous praise from Mikel Arteta, has been the talk of the competition. As for the club themselves, a delay in responding to media queries — with some requests for a statement not drawing a response — was put down to the fact that officials were in an emergency meeting to discuss how to respond to a potential scenario that has been in the pipeline for no fewer than 36 months. A two-line statement eventually landed at 9.54pm on Friday night, reading: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.' NEW ECB DEALS A big week incoming for the ECB, with the stunning deals for the Hundred franchises soon-to-be-finalised. More good news comes in the shape of the new nationwide tournament for state schools. In the first week since launch, understands that more than 500 state schools have signed up for the Knight-Stokes Cup, which is for year 10 pupils and is named after England pair Ben and Heather, who both went to comprehensives in Cumbria and Plymouth. The competition is part of a major push under the State School Task force, set up a year ago by the ECB. Meanwhile, the fight continues for money promised by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and then pulled by Sir Keir Starmer to build 20 Domes. The current government slashed the promised £35m funding and have agreed to fund two of the all-weather facilities, which are game changers for state schools. RADUCANU BOTTLES Emma Raducanu is a global ambassador for Evian, whose eye-catching, specially-commissioned bottles have become a must-have item for Wimbledon obsessives. However, the reusable vessels appear to have only been made available to players, officials and journalists. And some have been clearly been attempting to cash in – with the bottles available on eBay for as much as £200 each. WILLIAMS QUITS Former Swansea City boss Luke Williams has now given up his voluntary role at Bristol Airport after being spotted by fans. Williams took on a job as a customer care assistant, a move which emphasised his appetite to work rather than just wait at home for his next managerial role. However, subsequent media coverage saw his position, in which he often helped disabled passengers, become untenable, with football fans frequently asking for selfies. Those close to the 44-year-old say he did not think the increased attention was fair on those he was attempting to assist. A BOBBY ROBSON MEMORY The forthcoming release of a sequel to the classic golf-based comedy brings back a lovely memory of the late, great Bobby Robson. During his time as Newcastle United manager the club embarked on a tour of the United States. When a flight to Washington DC landed, those onboard were asked to remain seated for around a further 20 minutes. Why? Because their legendary manager was enjoying watching the original so much he wanted to finish it before disembarking. MILLWALL AUCTION A boardroom whiskey decanter, vintage armchairs and home and away dugout seats are among the popular items in an online auction of memorabilia triggered by Millwall's renovation of the Den. The 471-item haul also includes a pennant from the match against Sporting Lisbon, which opened the stadium in 1993 along with the 'welcome' sign from the Barry Kitchener stand and signs for dressing rooms and the tunnel area. Trophies up for grabs include a Johnstone's Paint Trophy team of the round, which has currently fetched a bid of £80. Sportbidder are running the auction, which ends on Tuesday. Proceeds go to the Championship side.

Celtic ‘considering' swoop for highly-rated defender as Brendan Rodgers tips surprise name for prominent role
CELTIC have only just added to their defence with the signing of Hayato Inamura on Friday. But the Scottish champions are already being linked with another addition to bolster their backline. 2 Brendan Rodgers and Celtic are reportedly targeting another defensive signing Credit: PA 2 Young centre-back Dane Murray could be in line for a bigger role in the coming season Credit: Kenny Ramsay Inamura, who was announced just before the Hoops' 1-0 friendly victory over Queen's Park on Friday, will provide competition in central defence. But he might not be the only new arrival in that position. That's as Stephen McGowan of Celtic Way is reporting that Celts are considering a move for Famalicao defender Justin de Haas. The £3million-rated Dutchman has reportedly caught the eye with impressive displays in Portugal, with Celtic not the only European side to scout him. The 25-year-old is described as being of interest to the Parkhead side as a replacement for the outgoing Maik Nawrocki, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Stephen Welsh, with the latter two players expected to join Nawrocki in leaving this summer. And de Haas isn't the only central defender who could be in line for a prominent role in Brendan Rodgers' plans. That's as the Hoops boss has earmarked academy graduate Dane Murray as a potential option throughout the coming season. Murray made his first-team debut last season, coming off the bench in the Champions League against Aston Villa and playing the full match against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup. The 22-year-old started Friday's friendly, and clearly impressed Rodgers enough to put himself in the frame for a support role this term. Rodgers said: "We've got Auston [Trusty], we've got [Liam] Scales.
