Why Revanth Reddy, Telangana Delegation Is Planning To Camp In Delhi
The Telangana cabinet has decided that a high-level delegation, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, will camp in New Delhi from August 5 to 7, to secure Presidential assent and central government approval for two crucial bills passed by the state legislature, which propose a 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BC) in education, employment, and local bodies.
This comes even as the Telangana High Court has set a deadline for conducting long-overdue local body elections and the stoppage of Finance Commission grants due to the absence of elected bodies.
The state government has already approved an ordinance to remove the 50 per cent reservation cap, a necessary step for implementing the increased quota, and this ordinance is currently awaiting the Governor's approval.
Ponnam Prabhakar, Telangana BC Welfare Minister said after the cabinet meeting yesterday, "This is not a political fight, but a battle for dignity and equal opportunity for more than 90 per cent of Telangana's population, including SCs, STs, BCs, and minorities. The sincerity of the state government is evident in its transparent and data-driven approach, and we urge all political parties, especially the BJP, not to create obstacles in the implementation of the Bills as this is the first initiative taken by any government in the interest of BCs since Independence."
During their three-day visit, the delegation, which will include cabinet ministers, MLAs, MLCs, and senior Congress leaders, plans to meet President Droupadi Murmu to directly request her consent for the pending bills. They also intend to engage with floor leaders, MPs, and presidents of various political parties, including the BJP and BRS, to build a consensus and garner national support for the 42 per cent BC quota.
Telangana's push for increased BC reservation is based on the findings of a comprehensive caste survey conducted by the state, which reportedly indicates that BCs constitute 56.3 per cent of Telangana's population.
The government asserts that this empirical data justifies breaching the traditional 50 per cent reservation cap set by the Supreme Court, similar to models adopted by states like Tamil Nadu under special constitutional provisions.
The Congress government has highlighted that this initiative is a fulfilment of its pre-poll promise and a step towards ensuring social justice and political empowerment for BC communities.
While the BJP has raised concerns regarding the inclusion of certain Muslim sub-groups under the BC-E category within the proposed quota, the Telangana government maintains that reservations are based on socio-economic backwardness, not religion, and that the expanded quota will benefit all eligible backward classes.
Union Minister of State for Home and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay has said Muslim reservation is set to increase in the guise of BC quota.
"Congress is giving a false impression to BCs. They are only offering an additional 5 per cent reservations. BCs already have 27 per cent reservations, and if the 10 per cent reservations for Muslims are removed, then BCs would only receive 5 per cent extra as part of the 42 per cent reservations. We don't have a problem with the BC reservation bill if they exclude Muslims in it, otherwise we will stop this. If we don't stop this here, it will become a template across India."

CM unveils T sports policy, says will bring youth back to ground
Hyderabad: In a big fillip to the sport in the state, chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday unveiled the sports policy, which he said would put the youth on the right track. The CM felt the new sports policy would bring back the sporting glory the city enjoyed in the past. "Hyderabad has a rich history of sports. Nine of the Indian football team that finished fourth in the 1954 Olympics were from Hyderabad. But the state lost track later and the sport was neglected in the last 10-15 years without proper policy. The youth, who played a crucial part in achieving a separate state, are now addicted to drugs. We plan to bring them back to the grounds with the new policy," Revanth Reddy said, addressing the sporting fraternity at the 1st Telangana Sports Conclave at HICC, Izzatnagar. He also sounded a warning that the state has declared a war on drug mafia and no one would be spared in this regard. "We will have a dedicated sports university and sports academy. Our aim is to see India as a sporting nation and, as a part of our Telangana Rising Vision 2047, a chapter will be dedicated to sports. There was no budget for sports till now. We will have dedicated budget for the betterment of the sport," he added. MoUs with foreign universities During the one-day conclave, the state govt signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with two foreign universities — Korea National Sports University in Seoul, South Korea, and Loughborough University based in Loughborough and London. The proposed sports university, to be run from Gachibowli for now, would share academic knowledge, curriculum, coaches training programmes, academic research and project collaboration. The govt has also signed MoUs with Olympic bronze medal winning shooter Gagan Narang's Gun For Glory, Abhinav Bindra's Sports Academy and FIFA to establish a FIFA Talent Academy in the state. They also signed MoUs with Anil Kumble's Tenvic, which will help them scout talent in 1,000 residential schools with 50 of them being centres of excellence (CoEs), Olympic Values Education Programme and Aspire for Her. Narang, Bindra and Pullela Gopichand would also conduct shooting, sports science and badminton mentorship programmes respectively. Incentives to athletes The CM also handed over cash incentives to athletes who had done the state proud by winning medals. Athlete Agasara Nandini, who won a gold in heptathlon at the 26th Asian athletics championship in South Korea received Rs 5 lakh,while gymnast Nishika Agarwal, who won a bronze in vault event, was rewarded with Rs 3 lakh. Differently-abled shooter Dhanush Srikanth was given a cheque for Rs 10 lakh for winning two gold medals in men and mixed team event at the World Deaf shooting championships last year. Goalball athletes Pavan Kalyan, P Sai Teja and coach G Shiva Kumar were given Rs 4.8 lakh. Panel to oversee Sports University Special chief secretary, sports, Jayesh Ranjan revealed that "the sports policy is inclusive, with focus on grassroots and schools to identify the talent and nurture it through proper system". Around 50 residential schools will have a centre of excellence (CoE) with top-class coaches and athletes would be provided with a proper ecosystem. To oversee the whole process and run the world-class sports academy, a governing council with 15 prominent personalities has been formed. With Sanjeev Goenka as chairman and Upasana Kamineni as the co-chairperson, the panel would have the likes of BV Papa Rao, Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, Baichung Bhutia, Ravikanth Reddy, Vita Dani, Kavya Maran and C Shashidhar, with Jayesh Ranjan and Sports Authority of Telangana chairman Shiva Sena Reddy as govt representatives. ‘UP govt revamped edu sector in 8 yrs'
Lucknow: Over the past eight years, the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP govt in the state took several steps to improve the education sector in UP. Various schemes were implemented, like Operation Kayakalp, Samagra Shiksha, PM SHRI Yojana and the Prerna App, to ensure more enrolment in schools and to improve existing infrastructure, said a govt spokesperson. "This remarkable transformation was acknowledged by NITI Aayog and the govt of India as a model of effective governance and innovation. It stands as proof that with strong political will and strategic planning, even the most broken systems can be reformed," the official said. He said that the govt initiated Operation Kayakalp and schools were given targets across 19 key parameters. They have so far achieved a 96% success rate. Under this, the availability of toilets for girls increased from 33.9% to 83.3%, with 53,154 toilets for boys and 51,826 for girls constructed. There was a 30% increase in the electrification of schools, reaching 85.9%. Safe water facilities were installed in 88.5% of schools. Another 61,128 schools were equipped with furniture, and boundary walls were constructed for 51,826 schools. The govt built 4,336 new schools and renovated 7,229 schools. Library access in schools rose from 22.9% in 2010 to 77.6% in 2024. In 2024-25, the govt distributed 15.37 crore textbooks. In 2016-17, 96,700 teachers were provided training. Against this, 4.53 lakh teachers were trained in foundational literacy, numeracy, and digital teaching in 2024-25. Over 25,000 smart classes and 5,568 ICT labs were set up, and 2.61 lakh tablets were distributed. Mid-day meal coverage increased from 71.3% in 2010 to 95.4% in 2024. Enrolment of girls went up from 72,680 in 2017 to 83,584 in 2024-25. ICT labs, smart classes, dormitories, computer labs, etc, are available in 746 KGBV schools, while 718 dormitories, 514 toilet blocks and 574 computer labs were built, the spokesperson said. Currently, Rs 1,200 is being provided to each student for uniforms, shoes, sweaters, stationery, etc, he said. Under the CM model composite school scheme, two modern schools are each being built in 75 districts at a cost of Rs 30 crore per school. Under the PM SHRI scheme, 1,722 schools are being equipped with state-of-the-art technology, he said. The spokesperson said the govt is spending Rs 5,000 per school for sports and physical education.
