Turner returns to Revolution on loan from Lyon after transfer to French team from Nottingham Forest
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his Major League Soccer roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper.
Turner transferred from England's Nottingham Forest to France's Lyon on Friday, then was loaned to the New England Revolution through June 30, 2026, in a deal that gives the Revolution an option to acquire his rights. Turner will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026.
Turner left the Revolution for Arsenal ahead of the 2022-23 season but played in just five Europa League and two FA Cup matches and transferred to Forest in August 2023. He lost the No. 1 spot there after allowing soft goals against Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal and was loaned for 2024-25 to Crystal Palace, where he played in just one League Cup game and three FA Cup matches — none after March 1.
Turner was displaced by New York City's Matt Freese as the U.S. goalkeeper for this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 31-year-old Turner became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup.
Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016.
He last played for New England in 2022, posting a 53.3% save percentage over five starts.

Dodgers 2-way star Shohei Ohtani to start on mound Wednesday. Team goes to 6-man rotation
BOSTON (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the Dodgers faced the Boston Red Sox in the finale of their three-game series that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With the Japanese superstar working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings on Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation. They currently have Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Dustin May, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Emmet Sheehan in the rotation. 'Shohei is going to go on Wednesday and then he'll probably pitch the following Wednesday, so that probably lends itself to the six-man,' Roberts said. In Ohtani's last start, he allowed one run and four hits in three innings against Minnesota on July 22. He struck out three and walked one, throwing 46 pitches, 30 for strikes. Roberts feels like this season is sort of a rehab year in the big leagues and doesn't foresee the team extending Ohtani's workload deep into games for a while. 'I think this whole year on the pitching side is sort of rehab, maintenance,' he said. 'We're not going to have the reins off where we're going to say: 'Hey you can go 110 pitches.' I don't see that happening for quite some time. I think that staying at four (innings) for a bit, then build up to five and we'll see where we can go from there.' Also Sunday, the club activated right-handed reliever Blake Treinen from the injured list and recalled left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The 37-year-old Treinen was a big part of last season's run to the World Series title, picking up two victories in the Series against the New York Yankees. He has been sidelined since April 19 because of forearm tightness. 'I think the only thing I'm going to be mindful of is the up-down,' Roberts said on Treinen's usage. 'To come into an inning of leverage, I have no problem.' Wrobleski, 25, is with the Dodgers for the fourth time this season. He's a starter now, but Roberts said he'll work out of the bullpen. 'Just trying to get a quality arm, get some length, potentially using him in two-inning stints, three-inning stints is going to be helpful for our 'pen," Roberts said. 'The goal is to get the best pitchers on your roster in whatever role.' Bev Priestman named head coach of Ninja A-League side Wellington Phoenix
'Today's a good day.' Those were the words of Bev Priestman as she was unveiled as the new head coach of Wellington Phoenix. She has signed a two-year deal with the Ninja A-League outfit. Durham-born Priestman is no stranger to New Zealand. Sixteen years ago, she headed up coach development in Wellington. She then went on to become New Zealand Football's director of football development. 'Coming back to New Zealand and seeing the Phoenix week in week out as the only professional women's team has been amazing,' she said following her announcement. Priestman spent stints with the Canadian U17s and U20s, before she was appointed as England assistant manager in 2018. She was part of Phil Neville's coaching staff that reached the 2019 World Cup semi-finals in France. Bev Priestman returns to coaching In 2020, Priestman returned to Canada — this time as head coach of the senior national team. She led them to Olympic gold in Tokyo before a disappointing group stage exit at the 2023 World Cup. Her time in charge of the Canadians ended in a shroud of controversy last summer. Priestman, assistant manager Jasmine Mander and analyst Joseph Lombardi were all dismissed in the wake of the 'spying' scandal when members of the backroom staff were caught flying a drone over — ironically — a New Zealand training session before their match in the Paris Olympics. Priestman was subsequently handed a one-year ban from all football related activities.
