‘Avatar: Fire and Ash' trailer unveiled: New sequel features freaky new villain, Na'vi civil war
And this time, they're battling a sexy, non-human baddie.
The first trailer for 'Avatar: Fire and Ash,' the third chapter in director James Cameron's 16-year-old science-fiction franchise that hits theaters Dec. 19, was unveiled to the press on Monday at Disney's offices in New York and LA.

And the movie's most striking addition is a freaky character named Varang, voiced by Oona Chaplin ('Game of Thrones').
Decked out in a spiky red-and-black headdress that brings to mind the Queen of Hearts from 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' she's the leader of the Ash Clan, a race of Na'vi that live up in the mountains around volcanoes.

Varang walks through a hot, gray landscape lit by magma and wields what looks like a flamethrower.
Appearing to hold Jake and Neytiri's daughter Kiri (Sigourney Weaver) hostage in the promo, Varang evilly hisses at the girl who has a special connection to the spiritual being Eywa, 'Your goddess has no dominion here.'
The wicked remark suggests that some Na'vi clans worship different entities — or none at all.
Venomous Varang would be the first full-on Na'vi villain in the 'Avatar' franchise, which has so far pitted the citizens of Pandora against violent earthlings. Now, it's the 10-foot-tall aliens that are at each others' throats.

'Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that,' Cameron told Empire. 'She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil.'
4 While called 'Fire and Ash,' the movie doesn't forget the oceans of 'Way of Water.'

The trailer also hints at generational change.
Young warrior Lo'ak (Britain Dalton) has seemingly grown close to Tsireya (Bailey Bass), the daughter of the sea clans leaders Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet) that he was smitten with in the second movie.

Tsiereya touches his heart and says, 'The strength of the ancestors is here.' What a flirt. His parents Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), meanwhile, exchange parental sideways glances.

Despite its title, 'Fire and Ash' also returns to the oceans of 'The Way of Water.' The whale-like Tulkun creatures are back. And so, of course, are the scaly flying Ikran.
A cool new mode of aerial transport we haven't seen before is revealed in the trailer — giant jellyfish-esque sky-ships that are pulled along by floating hippos.
It's unclear when the 'Fire and Ash' trailer will drop publicly, but Disney has a major wide release coming this weekend with Marvel's 'Fantastic Four: First Steps.'

'Fire and Ash,' out Dec. 19, is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the year. The first two chapters are respectively the No. 1 and No. 3 highest grossing films of all time — having raked in $5.2 billion at the worldwide box office.

Both were nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture, and the series spawned a successful theme park at Disney World's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida.
Cameron currently plans two more 'Avatar' films after 'Fire and Ash,' due out in 2029 and 2031.

Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2'
Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2' originally appeared on Parade. Happy Gilmore 2 just dropped on Netflix Friday, July 25, and it's already making headlines. The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 classic brings back the golf comedy chaos, complete with cameos from Travis Kelce, Eminem, Post Malone, and Bad Bunny. But one blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment is hitting fans especially hard: a cameo from the late Cameron Boyce. In one scene, a character working the check-in booth has a TV playing in the background. If you look closely, you'll catch the Disney Channel alum in the lower right corner—wearing a blue shirt and holding binoculars. Eagle-eyed fans quickly recognized the footage as a clip from Jessie, likely the episode where Boyce's character, Luke, breaks his leg and spends his time spying on the neighbors. The reactions rolled in fast. 'Happy Gilmore 2 was great. The honoring of Cameron Boyce was such a cute and awesome Easter egg. Bottom right of the screen they're watching them on TV. Adam Sandler you killed it,' one person posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'WHEN I SAW THAT I GASPED SO LOUD MY DOG LOOKED CONCERNED,' another quipped. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'I wasn't going to watch happy gilmore 2 but finding out about the nod to cameron boyce had made me so emotional I just might,' chimed in a third. 'It actually makes me so heartbroken to think about what an amazingly talented and kind soul the world lost when he passed,' someone else said. 'IM SOBBING I COMPLETELY MISSED THIS,' added another. The moment may be subtle, but it wasn't the first time the 58-year-old 50 First Dates actor honored Boyce. The two worked together on the Grown Ups franchise, where Boyce played Sandler's on-screen son. After Boyce died in 2019 from an epileptic seizure at just 20 years old, Sandler paid tribute to him in Hubie Halloween, with a photo and message in the credits: 'Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.' Boyce's Descendants co-stars and collaborators continue to keep his memory alive, too. On what would've been his 26th birthday in May, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart all posted tributes. 'i still feel you all the time. catch you in the next life. happy birthday. i love you,' Cameron, 29, shared alongside throwback photos and a close-up of her tattoo honoring him. 'Keep dancing in heaven, my Cam. Earth could never be the same without you,' Carson, 32, wrote. 'Our Angel. Our Sunshine. Our Cam.' Stewart, 31, posted a photo of the two drinking milkshakes on his Instagram Story, writing, 'Love you always, happy birthday @thecameronboyce.' Director Kenny Ortega also remembered him on Instagram, writing, 'You are love, light and forever with us.' Boyce was honored again in 2024's Descendants: The Rise of Red, where his character Carlos appears in a framed portrait and is referenced by name. China Anne McClain's character Uma looks at the photo and says, 'It's what Carlos would have wanted... Do it in honor of him.' That makes Happy Gilmore 2 the latest to pay tribute—and fans are taking note. While Sandler hasn't confirmed the moment, it lines up with his track record of honoring the people he's loved and worked with. And this small gesture? PREDATOR: BADLANDS Footage at Comic-Con Delivers a Brutal, Unexpected Opening — GeekTyrant
Fans packed into Hall H at Comic-Con got an absolute treat when 20th Century Studios shared a full 15 minutes of Predator: Badlands , and let me tell you, it was amazing, brutal, intense, and unlike anything we've seen in this franchise before. If you thought you knew what a Predator movie was, think again, director Dan Trachtenberg is throwing out the rulebook and doing something crazy cool! Spoilers ahead for the first part of the film This isn't your typical 'Predator comes to Earth and hunts humans' setup. Nope. Badlands flips the script by making the Predator itself, his name is Dek, the central character. This is his story, his hero's journey. The footage sets up an emotional and violent narrative that's personal, giving us an inside look at Yautja culture and savage family dynamics. Dek is considered the runt of his family. His father sees him as weak and dishonorable, believing it's better for him to die than live in shame. The opening scene wastes no time establishing that harsh reality. The first sequence is a vicious duel between Dek and his older brother. It's something we've seen glimpses of in the trailer, but in full context, it's awesome. The two clash with long, curved glowing red Predator blades in a fight that's savage. The choreography and visual effects, while still unfinished, already look impressive, and we know that Trachtenberg knows how to deliver visceral action. As the opening sequence unfolds, we learn that Dek once saved his brother's life. Unknowing to Dek, his older brother was tamed by their father to kill him. But, It's clear Dek's brother has no intention of doing that and is preparing to send him on his first hunt instead to prove his worth as a warrior. Dek shares with his brother that he wants to embark to one of the deadliest planets in the galaxy, home to a terrifying unkillable apex predator even their father fears. This isn't just a hunt, it's a suicide mission meant to redeem his honor. As his brother is trying to persuade him not to go to that planet, their father arrives, and all hell breaks loose. What follows is a wild jaw-dropping sequence where the father is furious that his older son hasn't killed Dek yet. Tensions erupt into violence, and the scene escalates into a brutal fight between father and son. It's savage:, the father hacks off his son's arm, stabs him, and ultimately kills him in cold blood. But before dying, the older brother manages one final act of defiance, he launches Dek's ship, sending him hurtling toward the hostile planet where his true test awaits. The last thing we see is Deck speeding off into the void, carrying the weight of his brother's sacrifice and the knowledge that his father wanted him dead. The scene cuts there, and the room absolutely exploded. If the first 15 minutes are any indication, Predator: Badlands is a bold reinvention of the franchise. Trachtenberg is giving us a Predator story that feels epic and mythic, all while keeping the raw, violent edge fans love. Everyone in that hall walked away thinking the same thing: this movie is going to be badass.

Box Office: ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Clobbers $57 Million Opening Day — Second-Biggest of the Year
'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' stretched its arms around $57 million from 4,125 theaters across Friday and preview screenings. Per Disney's numbers, that's the second-biggest opening day of the calendar year, ranking just behind 'A Minecraft Movie' ($57.11 million). The film is playing Imax and other premium large format auditoriums. It also just edges out Marvel Studios' comic book banner rival, DC Studios' 'Superman,' which began with a $56.1 million opening day just two weeks ago. It'll be a close call on whether 'Fantastic Four' can keep pacing ahead to beat the $125 million three-day opening of 'Superman.' More from Variety 'Fantastic Four' Credits Scene Confirms Franklin Richards' Role in 'Avengers: Doomsday,' but It's a Big Risk Pedro Pascal Downplays Reed Richards Becoming the New Leader of the Avengers in 'Doomsday': 'That's a Little Bit of a Mislead' Box Office: 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Makes $24.4 Million in Previews, Beating 'Superman' for Biggest of 2025 It's the best first day kick-off for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' dominated the box office 12 months ago. And like that R-rated smash, 'Fantastic Four' is based on Marvel characters that were acquired by Disney after the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, demonstrating some value to that $71 billion merger. Three previous big-budget 'Fantastic Four' entries were produced at Fox, from 2005 to 2015. (There was also an unreleased 1994 feature, spearheaded by Roger Corman as a means to retain film rights for German producers. It circulates among diehards.) With a story that has little connection to other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has presented itself as a relatively fresh entry point to audiences. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who lead the film as Marvel's first family, are all MCU newcomers. 'First Steps' also has the benefit of strong reviews and good audience sentiment (pollster Cinema Score turned in an 'A-' grade among ticketbuyers). At a production cost of $200 million, plus much more to market and distribute, the film will need to hold as one of the biggest grossers of the year to turn a profit in theaters. Marvel's two previous 2025 releases, 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Thunderbolts*,' launched to $88.5 million and $76 million respectively. Both ended up losing money theatrically. Disney hopes to gain some momentum with the Matt Shakman-directed 'Fantastic Four,' ahead of the studio's extensive hiatus from superhero films. Marvel is producing 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' the fourth Tom Holland-led entry set to release July 2026. But Sony is distributing that film. Disney will have nearly a year and a half to plan for its next MCU installment, the mega-team-up 'Avengers: Doomsday,' set for December 2026. Second place goes to Warner Bros.' 'Superman,' which added $7.1 million on Friday. It's down 57% from its daily total a week ago, now competing with a newer superhero spectacle. The cinematic universe-rebooter should fly to a $289 million domestic total after its third weekend, which will put it ahead of 'Sinners' ($278 million) to have it rank as the fourth-highest grossing North American release of the year. Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth' is sliding to third in its fourth weekend, adding another $3.6 million on Friday. The seventh entry in the dinosaur series is projecting $13 million for its fourth weekend, which would be another good hold at a 45% drop. Total domestic gross is expected to pass $301 million through Sunday — only the third release of 2025 to get into the triple hundreds. Fourth looks to go to 'F1.' Warner Bros.' release of Apple Studios' racing thriller added $1.8 million Friday, down just 37% from its daily total a week ago. At a production cost of $250 million, theatrical profitability is a questionable prospect at best for the Brad Pitt-led feature. But it has put up strong holds since debuting a month ago. The film looks to hit a $165 million domestic total through Sunday. Paramount's IP revival 'Smurfs' rounds out the top five, adding $1.72 million on Friday and projecting $5.6 million for its second weekend. After a low opening, that's a 49% second-weekend drop, showing some relative staying power as the only new animated offering to families. Domestic total will hit $22.9 million through the first 10 days — a disappointing result against a $58 million production budget.
