While most people mark Akshaya Tritiya by buying gold and beginning new ventures, for the Bengaluru Urban District Administration, the day holds a far deeper significance. This year, April 30 won't just be celebrated for prosperity — it will be remembered for protection. In a proactive step, the administration is turning its focus toward curbing child marriages, a silent social issue that often spikes during large-scale religious and cultural celebrations.Despite progress, child marriages continue to rise in the State. According to recent data shared by the Minister for Women and Child Development, between 2021-22 and 2023-24, the annual numbers were 418 cases in 2021-22, 328 in 2022-23, and a sharp increase to 719 in 2023-24.Recognising the increased risk of underage weddings on this auspicious day—when mass and individual marriage ceremonies are commonly held—Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh has issued strict directives to all relevant authorities to ensure that no child marriage slips through unnoticed. By treating the day not just as a festival but as a moment of vigilance, Bengaluru is sending out a clear message: Childhood is not for marriage—it's for dreams.Jagadeesh said, 'Under Section 13(4) and 13(5) of the amended law, the District Magistrate is empowered to act as the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer with the authority to take all necessary steps—including the use of minimum force where required—to prevent the solemnisation of child marriages, particularly on high-risk days like Akshaya Tritiya.'He said that despite awareness efforts and sensitisation campaigns, authorities acknowledge that child marriages still occur in some pockets—often due to lack of awareness or failure to notify officials. Jagadeesh has instructed officials at district, taluk, ward, andlevels to remain vigilant. All designated child marriage prohibition officers are expected to closely monitor both public and private ceremonies and intervene as needed.The administration is also urging the public and wedding organisers to be fully informed about the legal consequences of child marriage. 'Let us strive to make Bengaluru Urban District free from child marriages,' Jagadeesh said in the release. A 15-year-old girl was doused with petrol and set on fire in Odisha's Puri on Saturday, coming on the heels of the death of a college student who self-immolated herself after complaining of sexual harassment by a minor, who has suffered 70% burn injuries, has been to AIIMS Bhubaneswar and is critical. Grand flag hoisting ceremony at Ram temple in Ayodhya likely in November
Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust is planning a grand event for the flag hoisting ceremony at Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in which sadhus from all over the country will be invited. The event is likely to be organised on November 25 this year. The event will feature the Ram Barat procession, which will be taken out the first time from the Ram temple. (HT file) However, the Trust is yet to officially announce the date. The Trust has started preparing the list of invitees and its general secretary Champat Rai is overseeing all preparations for the mega event. 'The Trust is planning a grand flag hoisting ceremony in November at Ram Mandir's flagpole. The event is proposed on a large scale and guests from across the country will be invited,'said a member of the Trust. A 42-foot flagpole was installed on the Ram temple on April 29, 2025, ahead of Akshaya Tritiya. It was placed on the temple's peak after the completion of the spire. 'A special flag will be prepared to be hoisted over Ram Mandir which will represent Hindu religion and culture. The event will take place in November,' said VHP regional spokesperson Sharad Sharma who operates from Karsevakpuram. The Trust is planning to organise the event on the same scale as the first Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla was organised on January 22, 2024, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest. The event will feature the Ram Barat procession, which will be taken out the first time from the Ram temple. The procession might be limited to the temple premises or might be taken out for a city tour, with a final decision pending. Devotees from across the country will participate in the celebrations with lakhs of followers attending the event. According to the Trust, discussions will be held with sadhus and senior officials to finalise the arrangements. The event will be a significant milestone in the temple's calendar, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and traditions associated with Lord Ram's wedding also.

Make Anganwadi recruitment simpler, more transparent: Minister to officials
Bidar: Women and Child Development Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar has instructed department officials to ensure that the Anganwadi recruitment process is made simpler and more transparent, with all appointments completed within a maximum of three months. Chairing the Kalaburagi divisional-level departmental progress review meeting, the Minister emphasized that no delay should be allowed in recruitments and that any issues during the process must be resolved immediately. 'Our department is closely connected to people's lives. Officials must work diligently and avoid negligence,' she said. She further directed that all targets set by the state and central governments must be achieved. Raising concerns about irregularities, she pointed out complaints that children are not receiving eggs properly and that milk powder is being sold illegally in some locations. If such practices are found to be true, strict action will be taken against the responsible officials or staff, she warned. Minister Hebbalkar also instructed officers to keep local MLAs and ministers informed about departmental progress and schemes at regular intervals. Commendation from Minister Eshwar Khandre Participating in the meeting, Forest and District-in-Charge Minister Eshwar Khandre praised Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, calling her 'one of the most dynamic ministers in the government.' He noted her dedication to the welfare of women, children, the differently-abled, and senior citizens, and acknowledged her continued efforts to secure more funds for the department. Prior to the meeting, Minister Khandre felicitated Lakshmi Hebbalkar on her first official visit to Bidar district. The review meeting focused on progress under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) across the Kalaburagi Division, covering Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Ballari, Koppal, and Vijayanagar districts. The deliberations will continue on Saturday as well. Present at the meeting were Minister Rahim Khan (Municipal Administration and Haj), Department Secretary Shamla Iqbal, Bidar DC Shilpa Sharma, ZP CEO Girish Badole, SP Pradeep Gunti, Director of Women and Child Development Raghavendra, State Commissioner for Rights of Persons with Disabilities Das Suryavanshi, and senior officials from the department including joint and deputy directors.
