A 15-year-old girl was doused with petrol and set on fire in Odisha's Puri on Saturday, coming on the heels of the death of a college student who self-immolated herself after complaining of sexual harassment by a professor. The minor, who has suffered 70% burn injuries, has been to AIIMS Bhubaneswar and is critical. The incident happened in Bayabar village when the girl was going to her friend's house. She was waylaid by three miscreants, taken to the banks of the River Bhargavi and set on fire.advertisementThe incident happened just 1.5 km away from the Balanga police station.
The trio fled after the incident. The police have launched a manhunt for the miscreants.A senior police officer said that the girl suffered burn injuries to her back, abdomen and other parts. The victim's cousin brother said she was kidnapped, tied up near the river and set on fire. He said the incident happened barely 500 metres from their house. "My sister was going to her friend's place carrying some books. On the way, three people kidnapped her. They tied her up near the river and set her on fire using petrol. We don't know why she was attacked. We have filed a complaint with the police," he said.Local media reports said the girl's family has ruled out personal enmity or a love affair angle as possible causes.DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER REACTSDeputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said the police have been instructed to immediately arrest the culprits."I am deeply pained and shocked to hear the news that some miscreants in the Balangir region poured petrol on a fifteen-year-old girl on the road and set her on fire... All necessary arrangements are being made for her treatment. The government will bear all medical expenses," Parida said."The police administration has been directed to arrest the culprits immediately and take strict action," Parida, who also holds the Women and Child Development portfolio, tweeted.NAVEEN PATNAIK SLAMS BJPTearing into the ruling BJP government, former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said such incidents against women had become almost daily across the state."These are not stray cases of violence. These incidents occurring with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance. It shows that criminals have become emboldened under the present government and are not worried about being punished," Patnaik tweeted. He squarely blamed government inaction for Odisha becoming highly unsafe for women."Will the government wake up from this deep slumber and take speedy action so that the criminals are arrested? And more importantly, will the government respond so that such incidents are not repeated?" he said.advertisement'PM MODI HAS BLOOD IN HIS HANDS'Calling it an incident of "criminal negligence", the Trinamool Congress lashed out at the ruling BJP government, remidning it of its 'Beti Bachao' slogan."BJP, where is your Beti Bachao slogan now? Where is NCW hiding? Or are they too busy witch-hunting opposition voices instead of protecting India's daughters? This isn't governance. It's criminal negligence. PM Modi, blood is on your hands!" the TMC, which has an axe to grind with the Odisha government over the alleged detention of Bengali migrants, said. The incident comes at a time when tempers are yet to soothe in Odisha over the death of a student of Fakir Mohan College. The 20-year-old student set herself on fire on July 12 after her repeated sexual harassment complaints against a professor allegedly went unaddressed by the college authorities. The second-year B.Ed student suffered 95% burns and passed away at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday.- Ends

‘It's Loktantra, not Loktantar': BJP mocks spelling error in oppn banner; protest was over Bihar SIR

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday mocked opposition for displaying a banner with incoorect spellings of 'Loktantra' (democracy) in Hindi during a protest inside the Parliament complex. In a social media post, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya highlighted the error, saying, 'It's Loktantra, not Loktantar.' "Can't blame Congress They can neither spell nor save Loktantra They believe in Parivar Tantra and Emergency! Surely they can spell and save that," BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said. The jibe came as opposition MPs, including Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, staged a demonstration at Parliament's Makar Dwar over the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. During the protest, MPs raised slogans against the Election Commission 's exercise while holding a large banner that read: 'SIR: Loktantra par war' (Attack on democracy). The opposition has alleged that the voter roll revision is being misused to suppress votes and disenfranchise certain sections of the population. According to the Election Commission, 98.01% of voters in Bihar have been covered under the ongoing SIR as of July 23. Officials said the process has so far identified nearly 20 lakh deceased voters, 28 lakh individuals who have permanently migrated, 7 lakh voters enrolled in multiple locations, 1 lakh untraceable voters, and about 15 lakh unreturned voter forms. The EC also noted that 7.17 crore voter forms — approximately 90.89% of the total — have been received and digitised. This is the first such revision in Bihar in 22 years. The EC says the aim of the SIR is to clean up the electoral rolls by removing ineligible, duplicate, or non-existent entries, while ensuring all eligible citizens are included.

stalking accused, Har BJP leader's son made law officer

He has been appointed as an assistant advocate general and will represent the state government before judicial platforms in the national capital. His appointment is part of a broader recruitment of 100 law officers by the government, which was officially notified on July 18. The incident leading to the charges against Vikas occurred in 2017 when his father was the Haryana BJP chief. Vikas and his friend Ashish Kumar had been charged with stalking and attempting to kidnap a senior IAS officer's daughter by a court here in October 2017. The trial in the case is ongoing before a Chandigarh court. The complaint in the matter was filed by the daughter of a senior IAS officer, who was 29 at the time of the incident. She had then accused the men of stalking and attempting to abduct her. On August 5, 2017, Vikas, who was 23 at the time and a law student, along with Kumar, had allegedly followed the complainant's car in their SUV and tried to block the way. The charges against them were framed under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 354d (stalking), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 365 read with 511 (attempt to kidnap).

'Cleaned drains myself...': Smriti Irani says she did the ‘impossible' by defeating Rahul Gandhi in 2019 polls

Former Union minister Smriti Irani said she turned the "impossible into possible" when she defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. She also reflected upon the hard work she put in to achieve that feat. Smriti Iran told India Today in an exclusive interview that after losing the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, she spent the next five years working tirelessly on the ground. 'I cleaned drains myself, brought electricity to villages, built over a lakh homes, set up a medical college, a 200 bed hospital, a collector's office, a police line and even a fire station,' Irani was quoted as saying. Five years later, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Smriti Irani ousted Rahul Gandhi to clinch his stronghold constituency, Amethi. However, in the 2024 general elections, she faced defeat at the hands of Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma in a big upset for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). When asked whether Irani could have defeated Rahul Gandhi again if he had contested in 2024 from Amethi, Irani responded with a smile, 'Absolutely, that's why he didn't contest.' The former minister also clarified her less aggressive stance against Gandhi after the 2024 poll debacle. "Now, it's not my responsibility to be aggressive toward Rahul Gandhi. In 2024, the Gandhi family refused to face me. I can't chase after them," she said. During the interview, Smriti Irani said the Gandhi family moved to contest from Wayanad due to its favourable social demographics. 'No intelligent leader willingly chooses a seat where defeat is certain,' she said. 'If a seat like that is given, it's only out of duty to the party. But in 2019, I turned the impossible into possible," she added. Citing political history, Irani said losing from Amethi is not new for big leaders. "Sharad Yadav lost from Amethi, Menaka Gandhi lost. The Gandhi family only chose that seat due to favourable social equations," Irani said. She added that her defeat would have been more painful had she not worked extensively in Amethi between 2014 and 2019.
