Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Brazil has yielded a raft of strategic outcomes, ranging from enhanced trade ambitions to critical mineral partnerships and an anti-terror pact, according to key government sources.
A key highlight was the establishment of a $20 billion bilateral trade target over the next five years, with both sides agreeing to diversify their trade portfolios beyond existing sectors. A ministerial-level mechanism will be established to steer future commerce and trade talks. PM Modi also urged Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to support the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA)—a move Lula instructed his team to prioritise, recognising its potential for mutual benefit.
India is pushing for faster access to its pharma products in Brazil, tapping into a growing market for its medicines. The two countries also discussed cooperation in the mining and refining of critical minerals, especially lithium, copper, and rare earths—areas where Brazil has rich reserves. Collaborations were also proposed in defence manufacturing, biofuel technology, digital public infrastructure, and sports, particularly cricket and football.

On global security, the leaders signed a cooperation agreement to combat international terrorism and organised crime, and reaffirmed support for counter-terror financing initiatives under the UN and FATF. PM Modi thanked Brazil for condemning the Pahalgam terrorist attack and welcomed Lula's solidarity with India.
Both nations reiterated support for UNSC reforms, backed a two-state solution in Palestine, and discussed the Ukraine conflict's impact on the Global South. They also expressed a shared interest in promoting multipolarity, sustainability, and inclusivity in global governance. The visit signifies a deeper alignment between the two major democracies on both economic and geopolitical fronts. Siddhant Mishra

Trump Announces 50% Tariff On Brazil Citing Bolsonaro Trial And Trade Disputes
Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, citing unfair trade practices and prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro. US President Donald Trump announced a steep 50% tariff on imports from Brazil, dramatically escalating trade tensions with South America's largest economy. The move, Donald Trump said, is in part retaliation for what he described as the 'unjust" prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as well as what he called a 'very unfair trade relationship" between the two nations. The new tariff represents a fivefold increase from the 10% rate the US imposed on Brazilian imports in April. In addition to the tariffs, Donald Trump confirmed the launch of a federal investigation into what he called 'unfair trade practices" by Brazil. In a letter addressed to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Donald Trump accused the country of 'continued attacks on the Digital Trade activities of American companies," a reference to recent regulatory actions and digital taxation proposals being considered in Brazil. 'The relationship is far from reciprocal," Donald Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, adding, 'We will no longer tolerate one-sided trade and political persecution of a great friend of the United States." Following this, the total number of countries targeted under Donald Trump's renewed tariff campaign has reached 22 as earlier Donald Trump unveiled a fresh round of tariffs on several more countries, escalating his push for what he describes as 'fair and reciprocal" trade terms for American goods. The latest measures impose 30% duties on imports from Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq and Libya, along with 25% tariffs on Brunei and Moldova and a 20% rate on the Philippines. The announcement follows closely on the heels of Donald Trump's earlier move notifying 14 other countries of impending trade penalties. 'Conspiracy': Biden's Doctor Refuses To Answer Questions On Ex-President's Mental Fitness
Last Updated: Ex-White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor invoked the Fifth Amendment, refusing to answer questions about Joe Biden's cognitive health. Former White House physician Dr. Kevin O'Connor refused to answer questions about ex-US President Joe Biden's cognitive health during a closed-door session with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, invoking his Fifth Amendment right. According to Oversight Chairman James Comer, Dr. Kevin O'Connor declined to answer two direct questions: whether he was ever instructed to lie about the ex-President's health and whether he believed Joe Biden was unfit for office. 'He pleaded the Fifth Amendment," James Comer said. The only question Kevin O'Connor responded to was a confirmation of his name after which he swiftly exited the House office building. Kevin O'Connor's attorney, David Schertler, said the doctor had 'no choice" but to invoke his constitutional rights under the circumstances. James Comer criticized Kevin O'Connor's decision, calling it 'unprecedented" and accusing the Joe Biden administration of orchestrating a cover-up. 'Clearly there was a conspiracy to cover up," he said in a statement, adding, 'We will continue to interview more Biden White House aides to get the answers Americans deserve." The interview was part of a broader investigation into Joe Biden's mental fitness and whether key aides were exercising presidential authority behind the scenes. James Comer cited the book 'Original Sin' by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, which alleged that a group of senior Joe Biden aides were making key decisions in place of the US President. Members of this alleged inner circle are now scheduled to appear before the Oversight panel over the next few weeks. Upcoming witnesses include former Chief of Staff Ron Klain (July 24), counselor Steve Ricchetti (July 30), senior adviser Mike Donilon (July 31), deputy chief of staff Bruce Reed (August 5) and former senior adviser Anita Dunn (August 7). Joe Biden has previously dismissed concerns about his cognitive abilities, calling the claims 'ridiculous and false."
