Tennessee Titans training camp preview: Safeties
Today, we continue our training camp preview series by breaking down the Titans' safeties. Like many positions on the roster, the Titans have added some pieces to the backend with a solid mix of rookies and veterans. A noticeable change will be evident when the team reports to camp on July 22.
Here's a quick rundown of who and what to expect this summer.
Coaching staff
Dennard Wilson (defensive coordinator), Steve Jackson (secondary/safeties coach), Steve Donatell (assistant defensive backs coach)
Wilson and Jackson return in 2025, aiming to improve the Titans' run defense, which struggled during their first season together in Nashville. Tennessee has added some pieces to the secondary with veteran Xavier Woods and rookie third-round pick Kevin Winston, but has a solid mix of experience and youth to work with once they hit camp.
Strong safety
Starter: Amani Hooker
Reserves: Kevin Winston Jr., Mark Perry, Julius Wood
Hooker returns to the fold and is the leader of the secondary. He is coming off an excellent season and is a consistent defender. The veteran defensive back is an underrated competitor and could be even better if the team around him stays healthy.
Winston was drafted in the third round and has a chance to develop into an outstanding playmaker for the Titans' defense. An athletic safety with upside, had he been healthy in 2024, he likely would have gone higher in the draft. Winston will have to play catch-up after missing all of the field work during offseason activities as he recovers from the ACL injury that cost him most of the season. But all signs point to him being ready for camp.
Perry and Wood will be fighting for a depth role or a spot on special teams.
Free safety
Starter: Xavier Woods
Reserves: Mike Brown, Kendell Brooks
Tennessee signed Woods as an unrestricted free agent to add an experienced presence to the defensive backfield. A consummate professional, the veteran defensive back has been a consistent playmaker throughout his career, bringing a diligent work ethic to the team. His leadership qualities could become a significant asset if things start to unfold as they did in 2024, when injuries ravaged the defense.
Brown is coming off an uneven season where he flashed potential. If he can become more consistent, he should be a solid rotational piece. Brooks has an uphill climb, but he could work his way into the mix if he shows some special-teams value.
Overall outlook
The safety position should be one of the most consistent units on the defense, and enters training camp with most of the depth chart in place. Winston is a wildcard; if healthy, he has the skill set to push for playing time early in the season.

Sparks' Cameron Brink gets a major injury update from Lynne Roberts
The post Sparks' Cameron Brink gets a major injury update from Lynne Roberts appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Sparks are getting closer to the return fans have long been waiting for. After over a year sidelined by a torn ACL, Cameron Brink confirmed on Saturday that she has been medically cleared to return and is now working to get back into game shape. 'I'm cleared. It's just getting reps at this point. Just getting back up to speed with everybody,' Brink said ahead of the Sparks' matchup with the New York Liberty, according to Ben Pickman on X. The 23-year-old forward has been absent significantly since suffering a non-contact knee injury against the Connecticut Sun in June 2024. The next day, the team announced she had torn her ACL, ending her rookie season and forcing her to miss the Paris Olympics, where she was set to represent Team USA in 3×3 basketball. Later, Brink shared on Instagram that while the injury was tough, she was determined to come back even stronger. Her absence left the Sparks with a major hole in the paint. Los Angeles finished the 2024 season with a league-worst 8-32 record, and their interior defense and rebounding continue to be concerns in 2025. Though the team has improved offensively — currently ranking third in points per game — they remain among the worst in rebounds and turnovers, two areas where Brink's presence could make an immediate impact. Head coach Lynne Roberts said Brink is not back yet, but she is making progress. The coaching staff is being cautious and letting her take her time to find the right rhythm and be fully fit before bringing her back into the rotation. Brink's return to the Sparks would boost their defensive capabilities and offer leadership for a young team searching for its direction. Brink's rebounding, rim protection, and ability to score are essential components of a team trying to make a return to the playoffs. While the Sparks are currently 10th in the WNBA standings, the team could use a boost — specifically a boost from someone like Brink — as the season ends. For now, the Sparks and their fans will have to wait a bit longer, but all signs point to Cameron Brink's highly anticipated return being just around the corner. Texans WR Tank Dell makes an appearance at training camp
Tank Dell might not be back in 2025 as he recovers from a devastating knee injury, but that doesn't mean the third-year Houston Texans receiver isn't helping the team in other ways off the field. Texans owner and CEO Cal McNair praised Dell for being an essential part of the team from the sidelines and supporting his teammates during training camp on the sidelines. The former third-round pick was seen at practice in front of fans on Saturday, interacting with the Houston faithful while signing autographs. 'He's got an unbreakable spirit,' Cal McNair said. 'It's showing up in his rehab and we can't wait to get him back here as soon as we can get him.' Dell, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL, LCL and MCL, along with a dislocated knee, will start the year on the PUP list. According to KPRC2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, the speedy receiver isn't expected to be cleared for contact before the end of the regular season. While he's not expected to be clear, Texans general manager Nick Caserio hasn't ruled him out for the season, though he also didn't put a timetable on when he'll be cleared for drills. "Tank's had a good attitude," Caserio said. "Been in the building essentially every day. He is working really hard." DeMeco Ryans mentioned that Dell has been "crushing" the rehab process and has been in a great "headspace," but also wouldn't put a timeline on a recovery timeline. "Whenever Tank is ready to go back, he'll be back.," Ryans said. "I'm concerned about Tank as a young man, just getting back healthy, physically and mentally. When that time is set, he'll be back for us.' Dell, who underwent his latest surgery in March, was seen walking around without any noticeable limp. He's yet to speak to the media, signs are pointing toward his role maybe expanding closer toward the season's end. The Texans return to training camp on Monday.
