Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, a member of all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence and known for the hit song Wish I Didn't Miss You, started singing as a child in South Carolina, in church choirs. The Sequence, formed by the then Angela Brown and childhood friends Gwendolyn Chisolm and Cheryl Cook, were the first all-female hip-hop group to release an album, through the groundbreaking Sugar Hill Records. The group released three records, to moderate commercial success, before disbanding. Stone emerged as a solo artist in the early 2000s, enjoying considerable success propelled by Wish I Didn't Miss You, which was a dance floor hit. At around the same time, Stone branched out into acting, appearing in a mix of drama and reality TV shows and also racking up a dozen feature film credits. However, music remained Stone's main claim to fame and singles No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Baby both topped the Billboard R&B chart, and her 2001 album Mahogany Soul and 2007 album The Art Of Love & War both made the Billboard top 30. Angie Stone was killed in a crash on an Alabama highway when travelling to a concert. She died on March 1 aged 63. — APL/agencies

Lorde finds comfort in own skin
Reviewed by JOHN HAYDEN From counting dollars on the train in Takapuna to the Big Apple, Ella Yelich-O'Connor's path has been utterly singular. After a Grammy-gobbling debut (2013's Pure Heroine ), and its unimpeachably brilliant follow-up Melodrama (2017) where she carved out new modes of young adult expression - at turns bruised, wry, bitter and heroically self-aware - Lorde found herself at the forefront of the art-pop vanguard, blazing a trail for the likes of Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo- purveyors all of confessional lyrics and unpolished vocals, set to a minimalistic sonic template. The sun-dappled Solar Power (2021) followed, a folk-pop left-turn which left fans and press alike cold with its unassuming arrangements and lyrics lambasting the climate crisis, as their author wrestled with the messianic weight of celebrity - hardly befitting a pop princess who rubbed shoulders with A-List besties with names like Taylor and Charli. Certainly, when she opined on Oceanic Feeling about 'building a pyre... ready to 'step into the choir'', there was the sense she already had one eye on her next incarnation. With no new music since, save for a guest spot on Charli XCX's Girl, So Confusing remix - which snagged her an Aotearoa music award for single of the year in May - our own Prettier Jesus titillated followers with a pop-up show broadcast from an Auckland toilet block as part of the rollout for her fourth LP, Virgin . Her turn on the Charli track featured a frank confession - 'for the last couple years / I've been at war with my body' - setting the tone for her most unflinching set of songs to date. The stark cover art - an X-ray of the singer's pelvis - signals the candour within. Opening track Hammer sees the singer prowling New York, claiming that 'when you're holding a hammer / everything looks like a nail,' and that 'some days I'm a woman / some days I'm a man''. Where Solar Power saw freedom as sandy beaches and ignoring phone calls, here, Lorde's liberation is in bodily autonomy, a theme further examined on the breathtaking Man of the Year . Over the gauziest of synth pulses and compressed cymbal crashes, Lorde embraces her masculine side as she ponders 'who's gon' love me like this / who could give me lightness?' Shapeshifter 's arrangements further evoke this flux, as she intones 'I've been the siren / been the saint' as the backing miraculously morphs from skeletal garage beats to lush string swells. Yet Virgin 's liberation is borne of bitter experience. Lead single What Was That sees Lorde struggling with expectation ('since I was 17 I gave you everything') while Broken Glass candidly details an eating disorder over a phones-aloft, arena-ready chorus. Elsewhere, the sumptuous Clearblue - all disjointed, auto-tuned a capella snippets - is an arresting account of awaiting the results of a pregnancy test. Ultimately, as Lorde nudges her 30s, Virgin stands as a vibrant testament to transformation, the sound of an artist craving, and finding, comfort in their own skin. BIG THIEF Share New Single 'All Night All Day'; New Album 'Double Infinity' To Be Released On 5 September
Big Thief release ' All Night All Day '. the second single from their sixth studio album, Double Infinity, out 5 September 2025. Following lead single 'Incomprehensible', boasting 'crunchy psych-folk guitars, a smorgasbord of percussion, and the delicate power of Adrianne Lenker 's voice', 'All Night All Day' is an expression of love and desire without shame. Lenker sings: 'Swallow poison swallow sugar / Sometimes they taste the same / But I know your is neither / And love is just a name/ It's a thing we say for what pulls through / 'Til we come together.' Here, she asserts love is neither bitter nor sweet, but something deeper than both – deeper than sensation. It is the "eye behind the essence" which is bigger than naming. Making love can be the expression of this nameless thing. Double Infinity is the follow-up to 2022's Grammy-nominated album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, recorded last winter at the Power Station, New York City. For three solid weeks, the trio would ride bicycles on frozen streets between Brooklyn and Manhattan, meeting in Power's Station's warm wood-panelled room. Together with a community of musicians (Alena Spanger, Caleb Michel, Hannah Cohen, Jon Nellen, Joshua Crumbly, June McDoom, Laraaji, Mikel Patrick Avery, Mikey Buishas) they would play for nine hours a day, tracking together – simultaneously – improvising arrangements and making collective discoveries. Double Infinity was produced, engineered and mixed by longtime Big Thief collaborator Dom Monks. 'How can beauty that is living be anything but true?' Adrianne asks as she drives nose against the future with childhood mementos on 'Incomprehensible'. She understands, 'everything I see from now on will be something new.' The silver hairs on her shoulders are new as well. Yet fear of aging is cracked by proof. If a life is shaped by living, 'Let gravity be my sculptor, let the wind do my hair.' Being born, then staying a while, remains the greatest mystery. Adrianne claims her place and time. 'Incomprehensible, let me be.' Double Infinity will be released digitally and on cassette, CD, and standard black vinyl.
