Supreme Court Extends Stay On 'Udaipur Files' Release Until Thursday
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that the stay on the release of the movie Udaipur Files will remain in effect until Thursday. In today's hearing, the top court took note of the order passed by the Centre recommending six cuts in the movie before release. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi stated that the filmmakers will have to implement the six cuts recommended by the Centre. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for writ petitioner seeking stay on release said, "The Centre today informed the Supreme Court that it has passed an order in the applications seeking the revision of the certificate granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for the controversial movie "Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder." On the other hand, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting accepted the report of an expert committee which suggested the changes. The six mandated changes include a more detailed disclaimer stating that the film is a work of artistic expression and does not promote violence or defamation of any community. Additional changes include revising an AI-generated scene that depicts a Saudi Arabia-style turban, changing the character name "Nutan Sharma" to a different name, removing a dialogue attributed to Nutan Sharma, and deleting a conversation between the characters Hafiz and Maqbool. Taking note of the Centre's order, the Supreme Court adjourned the petitions relating to the movie till Thursday. The Court granted the parties the liberty to file objections to the Centre's order. Until the next hearing, the stay on the film's release will remain in effect. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that imposing any further changes would violate the filmmakers' right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. However, Advocate Menaka Guruswami appearing for Mohd Jawed said that they want to challenge the Centre's order which clears the way for release after implementing six cuts.

New disclaimer, removal of some dialogues: central panel recommends changes in ‘Udaipur Files'; next SC hearing on Thursday
The central government Monday informed the Supreme Court that a committee it set up to review the certificate granted by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for the movie Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder has recommended certain changes to the film, including adding a new disclaimer. With the Centre placing the order on record, the bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi adjourned the hearing on petitions for and against the film's release till July 24, and directed that the stay on the release will continue till then. The committee, after deliberations and detailed discussions, recommended that the filmmakers 'replace the existing disclaimer with the provided recommended disclaimer' and include a voice-over for the disclaimer; remove the frames in the credits that thank various individuals; replace all instances of the name 'Nutan Sharma', including on the poster, with a new name; besides directing the removal of some dialogues. The Delhi High Court had stayed the movie's release till the Centre's committee took a call on the matter, and following a writ petition by an accused who contended that releasing the film would jeopardise his right to a free trial. Apprising the bench about the order of the committee set up by the Information and Broadcasting ministry, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said anything more than what has been done would be violative of the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution. He added, 'It is my personal opinion, having gone through the order.' Hearing the matter on July 14, the apex court had decided to wait till July 21, by which time it hoped the committee would take a decision. Appearing for the petitioner, Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy said, 'I am challenging the order (of the committee).' Justice Surya Kant told Senior Advocate Gaurav Bhatia, who submitted that the committee had ordered six changes, that he will have to make those changes anyway 'unless you challenge that order and your plea is accepted.'

Ellen DeGeneres And Portia de Rossi May Remarry In The UK Amid Uncertainty In The US
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi may remarry in the UK if the US overturns same-sex marriage. They moved to the Cotswolds after Trump's 2024 re-election. Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi are considering getting remarried in the UK if the US overturns same-sex marriage. The couple-whose move to the Cotswolds in South West England was spurred on by the re-election of President Donald Trump in 2024 – tied the knot during an intimate ceremony at their home in Los Angeles, California, in 2008. But after a vote by Southern Baptists in June to endorse a resolution that would look to overturn Obergefell v Hodges – the Supreme Court case that legalised same-sex marriage across the US in June 2015 – Ellen and Portia are 'looking into" saying 'I do" in the UK to protect their marriage. Speaking to TV presenter Richard Bacon, 49, during her In Conversation with Ellen DeGeneres event at Cheltenham's Everyman theatre on July 20, she revealed: 'The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage. 'They're trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we're going to get married here. A reversal of Obergefell would not ban gay marriage, but would call 'for laws that affirm marriage between one man and one women". Later in the talk, Ellen, 67, expressed her sadness that not all societies accept people of all sexualities. She said. 'I wish we were at a place where it was not scary for people to be who they are. I wish that we lived in a society where everybody could accept other people and their differences. So until we're there, I think there's a hard place to say we have huge progress." Ellen confirmed she and Portia, 52, moved to the UK because of Donald Trump, 79, being re-elected as President of the United States in November 2024. Admitting that 'everything here is just better" after leaving the Republican Party-led country, the former talk-show host said: 'We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, 'He got in.' And we're like, 'We're staying here.'" Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
