ICMR sets up high performing computing facility to boost genomic surveillance and pandemic preparedness
The acquisition of the state-of-the-art computing cluster, named NAKSHATRA, comes soon after India reported a surge in COVID-19 cases, though the number of active cases have dipped marginally over the last two days.
ICMR-NIV Pune director Naveen Kumar noted that several new pathogens and COVID variants are being reported. 'It's essential that we upgrade to stay ahead in enhancing public health research capacity,' he said.
Genomic research upgrade
Attributing the emergence of novel pathogens to increased globalisation, global warming, and deforestation, Dr. Kumar said that his centre has been doing extensive sequence analysis using multiple strains, which used to take weeks.
'Now with the upgrade we can do the same work in 24 to 48 hours. It has increased the capability of our country for genomic surveillance, which will help us in pandemic preparedness,' he said.
The NAKSHATRA facility enables enhanced storage and optimises the pipeline for genomic research, which ensures better viral genomic surveillance capacity and national preparedness for any future pandemic. The facility supports faster analysis of complex genomic data, allowing scientists to detect new disease threats sooner, respond to outbreaks more efficiently, and accelerate AI-driven vaccine and drug development.
Central data repository
Developed under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PMABHIM), the facility forms the cornerstone of a new project, called the High Performance Computing Next Generation Sequencing Hub.
The Pune facility will initially serve five ICMR institutes across the country, acting as a central repository for sequencing data.
Sarah Cherian, group leader of the Bioinformatics and Data Management Group and principal investigator of the project, provided a comprehensive overview of the cluster's capabilities and its role in genomic research. She said that the computing cluster is tailored to support complex bioinformatics workflows, including next-generation sequencing, transcriptomics, phylogenetics, metagenomics, and structural bioinformatics.
Genomic monitoring impact
Already, NIV Pune has played a key role in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously significant genetic alterations in the virus had triggered the second and third wave and ongoing genomic monitoring and analysis helped in early detection of variants of interest and concern.
'This in turn had helped in paving the way for implementing the booster dose of vaccination for COVID,' the institute noted.

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha on Monday demanded that every citizen be granted a legal right to Annual Health Checkups, highlighting that the early diagnosis of diseases could save countless lives and ease the burden on India's healthcare system. During a Special Mention in the Upper House, Mr Chadha said, "Annual health checkups have become a luxury in our country - something only the affluent can afford. A mother who never knew she had cancer, a son who discovered his blood pressure only after a stroke, a sister whose vision loss revealed diabetes - these stories are far too common." Referring to the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic and several viral videos of young people suffering cardiac arrests on a daily basis, Mr Chadha said the time has come for structured, state-sponsored preventive healthcare becoming central to India's public health policy. Mr Chadha said that only 2 per cent of Indian women have undergone cancer screening, citing data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), terming it "deeply alarming." He urged the government to make affordable, accessible and routine health screenings a legal right for every citizen, with systems in place across urban and rural India. "In several countries, governments proactively conduct health checkups. They invite citizens to participate and ensure that illnesses are caught early," Mr Chadha said in Parliament. Speaking to NDTV after raising the issue in Parliament, Mr Chadha said, "This is standard practice in most developed countries, but sadly not in India. If the government allows this, I don't think it will be a huge financial burden." He added, "In fact, it will actually bring healthcare expenditure down in the long run. When illnesses are detected early, we avoid the need for prolonged and costly treatments in government hospitals." A study published in the Lancet journal found that around 55 per cent of heart attack deaths in India occur due to delays in seeking timely diagnosis. Mr Chadha concluded by saying, "Jaan hai, toh janch hai. But janch hogi, tabhi toh jaan bachegi (If there is life, then there is a diagnosis. But lives can only be saved if there is a diagnosis)."

New Delhi, The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is poised to launch a nationwide initiative to expedite the biometric update of Aadhaar cards for children through schools in the next two months. The initiative aims to cover over 7 crore children whose biometric details have not yet been CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar said the authority is currently testing the technology and expects it to be ready in the next 45-60 days. The project will be rolled out in a phased manner, beginning with schools and later extended to colleges for the second round of updates, which are required for children who attain the age of 15 to UIDAI guidelines, biometric updates become mandatory once a child is 5 years old. Children under 5 years are issued Aadhaar without biometric data. Failing to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) before age 7 could result in deactivation of the Aadhaar number. Updates between ages 5-7 are free of cost, but a fee of Rs 100 applies after age 7."Aadhaar is crucial for delivering benefits under several government schemes. We want children to get all the benefits at the right time. Through schools, we are trying to reach as many children in a convenient manner," Kumar UIDAI has reiterated the importance of completing the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children who have attained the age of seven but have not yet updated their biometrics in Aadhaar. This is an existing requirement under Aadhaar, and parents or guardians can update the details of their child at any Aadhaar Seva Kendra or designated Aadhaar has started sending SMS messages to the mobile numbers registered in the Aadhaar of such children for completing the MBU exercise.A child's Aadhaar Biometrics can be updated for free between ages 5 and 7. A child under the age of five enrols for Aadhaar by providing the photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address and documents of proof. However, the fingerprints and iris biometrics of a child are not captured for Aadhaar enrolment below the age of five because these are not mature at that age, according to an official per existing rules, therefore, fingerprints, iris and photo are mandatorily required to be updated in his/her Aadhaar when the child reaches the age of five years. This is called the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU), the statement explained.

On-demand driver service platform DriveU logs 22% rise in FY25 revenue; net profit zooms to Rs 1.7 crore
Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Bengaluru-based on-demand driver service platform DriveU reported a 22% increase in revenue to Rs 111.8 crore in the financial year 2025, up 22% from Rs 91.6 crore a year back, led by an increase in bookings of company's profit after tax (PAT) rose to Rs 1.73 crore in FY25, compared to Rs 11 lakh in FY24, said the company in a release.'We are coming back quicker after Covid-19, with our team delivering one of the strongest performances. We will be increasing our presence in cities such as Chennai, Hyderabad, and Delhi in the coming years,' said Rahm Shastry, chief executive officer of revenues jumped significantly, the company managed to check its overall expenses to Rs 27.8 crore, up 13.5% from Rs 24.5 crore a year back. Its marketing expenses almost doubled on-year to Rs 4.56 crore in FY25. Employee benefit expenses rose to Rs 12.26 crore in FY25 from Rs 10.63 crore in FY24.'In one of our major markets, Bengaluru, we are able to get only 7% of car owners to use our service. We will largely focus on improving our presence by promoting drivers on demand in the next few years,' said company reported Rs 1.74 crore of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda), up from Rs 1.08 crore in the previous in 2015, DriveU has raised around $8.8 million in equity money from a bunch of angel investors and Washington-based Capria Ventures.
