Odisha: Patients get tests done in hazardous condition as CT Scan, MRI rooms flood in rain

Mayurbhanj (Odisha) [India] July 13 (ANI): Patients and their families faced hazardous situations at a hospital in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district after rainwater flooded the rooms housing the CT scan and MRI machines.
Due to continuous rainfall, water seeped into the diagnostic rooms, forcing patients to undergo vital medical tests in waterlogged areas.
A family member who had brought his father for an MRI scan described the scene: 'After the rain started, water started accumulating in the rooms. This is risky for the patients and the relatives. This can also cause problems related to electricity. I request the concerned people to look into this.'
Another visitor expressed concern after seeing the flooded CT scan area. 'I brought my wife here for the CT scan. I saw that there is water in all the rooms. I am worried about how they are doing the CT scans. There is a risk of a short circuit. The patients are in danger because of the rainwater that fills the rooms. The health department should make sure that the rooms don't get filled with rainwater,' the family member told ANI.
Meanwhile, Odisha's Mayurbhanj district last month reported a continuous rainfall that led to severe waterlogging in several blocks and panchayats, particularly in villages near Similipal region.
Roads were submerged, forcing residents to wade through knee-deep water to reach their homes. Villagers from the worst-affected areas reported that the crisis has been compounded by poor drainage infrastructure and heavy siltation, which has blocked the natural flow of water. The situation has persisted for many days, leaving nearly 1,000 people with restricted mobility and growing hardships.
Meanwhile, on June 29, India welcomed the monsoon, arriving eight days ahead of its expected onset date of July 8. (ANI)

New Nipah death in Palakkad; 6 districts in Kerala put on alert
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 14 (ANI): Kerala's Palakkad district has reported a second Nipah case after a 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad tested positive for the virus following his demise at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. Following the development, an alert has been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, and Thrissur districts of the State. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that a contact list has been prepared in the case. The government is awaiting confirmation from the Pune Institute of Virology. The patient died on July 12, and his samples tested positive in a test conducted at Manjeri Medical College, the minister said. Contact tracing was immediately started to find those who were in contact with the deceased. Forty-six people are on the contact list. Information, including CCTV, has been collected. A route map has been prepared based on the available information. A family tree has also been prepared, said the minister. Field-level activities have been intensified in the area. Fever surveillance is also continuing. Further monitoring will be carried out, including the mobile tower location. The minister also directed the team to be strengthened in case another case is found. Veena George urged people to avoid unnecessary hospital visits, especially in Palakkad and Malappuram districts. Avoid visiting relatives and friends who are undergoing treatment in the hospital as much as possible. Only one person should accompany the patients as an assistant. Health workers, patients and their companions who come to the hospital should wear masks, said the minister. There are a total of 543 people in the Nipah contact list. Out of these, 46 people are in the contact list of the new case. There are 208 people in Malappuram district, 219 in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and 2 in Ernakulam on the contact list. Ten people are under treatment in Malappuram. 2 people are under ICU treatment. So far, 62 samples have tested negative in the Malappuram district. One person in Palakkad is under treatment in isolation. A total of 36 people in the state are in the highest risk category, and 128 are under observation in the high-risk category. Veena George also said that an alert has been issued to hospitals in 6 districts in the wake of the second Nipah case in Palakkad district. A special alert has been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts. Kerala: Six districts on alert after man tests positive for Nipah virus after his death in Palakkad
Six districts in Kerala have been put on alert after a 58-year-old man from Palakkad tested positive for the Nipah virus after he died on Saturday, ANI reported. This is the second case reported in the district. The man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad in Palakkad tested positive for the virus after he died at a private hospital in Malappuram district's Perinthalmanna, The Hindu reported. He was being treated at the hospital for a fever. The virus was detected through tests conducted at the Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram, The New Indian Express reported. The samples have been sent to the Pune's National Institute of Virology in keeping with the standard protocol for confirmation. This was the second Nipah-related death in Kerala in recent weeks. An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram died from the infection on July 1, while another patient from Palakkad was hospitalised. On Sunday, state Health Minister Veena George said that an alert had been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts, ANI reported. George said that a contact list had been prepared of the 46 persons who had interacted with the man over the past three weeks, along with a route map, The Hindu reported. She added that both were awaiting release pending confirmation from the National Institute of Virology. The minister said that fieldwork, including fever surveillance and door-to-door visits by health workers to provide guidance on precautions against the virus, were being conducted in Kumaramputhur. 'We will bolster our fight against Nipah by strengthening the health teams involved in it and intensifying preventive measures as soon as we get the final confirmation from NIV, Pune,' The Hindu quoted George as saying. With the 46 contacts of the latest case, 543 persons across the state were currently under observation for the virus, the newspaper reported. At least 208 of them are in Malappuram, 219 are in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam. The Nipah virus is a ' zoonotic illness ' transferred from animals such as pigs and fruit bats to humans. The virus can also be caught through human-to-human transmission. It causes fever and cold-like symptoms in patients. The infection can also cause encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, and myocarditis, or the inflammation of the heart, in some cases.
