CBS Sports compares Falcons rookie to Hall of Fame defensive end
While none of these legends ever played for Atlanta, an NFL writer recently compared one of the Hall of Famers to Falcons first-round pick James Pearce Jr. In a feature from CBS Sports, Chris Trapasso highlighted one rookie comparison for each of the four Hall of Fame inductees.
Pearce was listed as the rookie comp for Allen, who retired from the league as one of the most productive pass rushers of all time. Allen, a former fourth-round pick, recorded 136 sacks, 228 QB hits, 32 forced fumbles, and 171 tackles for loss over his 12 NFL seasons.
"In terms of on-field style, the two outside rushers are clearly comparable, with immense bend and surprising point-of-attack power to drive offensive tackles into quarterbacks' laps," wrote Trapasso. "The two played completely different competition levels in college -- Allen in the Big Sky at Idaho State, and Pearce in the SEC at Tennessee but are easily tied by production."
The Falcons rookie was highly productive at arguably the most competitive conference in the country. Like Allen, Pearce became a consistent force of pressure during his time in college.
"Pearce had 19.5 sacks, 30 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles in 39 games with the Volunteers, and ended his career in Knoxville with back-to-back seasons generating a pressure on more than 20% of his pass-rush opportunities," added Trapasso. "The sheer relentlessness these two play with on a down-to-down basis was the final convincing factor for me -- Pearce is the most Allen-like rusher in this rookie class."
Thus far in Atlanta, Pearce has lived up to the hype. While fellow first-round pick Jalon Walker has missed time due to a hamstring injury, Pearce has been consistently disruptive when going against the Falcons offense at practice.
The team made a big commitment by trading a future first-round pick to acquire Pearce. I think it's fair to say the Falcons would be thrilled if the rookie's career follows a similar trajectory to Allen's.

Micah Parsons listed as starter on Cowboys' first unofficial depth chart despite trade request, lagging contract negotiations
The Dallas Cowboys have released their first unofficial depth chart of the 2025 season, and defensive end Micah Parsons is listed as a starter despite his trade request and lagging contract negotiations. Parsons has yet to fully participate in a training camp practice in the two weeks since the team reported to Oxnard, California. He released a lengthy statement on social media this past Friday, requesting a trade from the Cowboys, who drafted him No. 12 overall in the 2021 draft. That said, Parsons continued to show up at Cowboys practice Saturday and Monday — the team was off on Sunday — notably wearing his No. 11 jersey Monday while watching his teammates and conversing with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as well as vice president of player personnel Will McClay. While Parsons wrote, "I no longer want to be here," in a trade-request statement he captioned, "Thank you Dallas," on X, the Cowboys aren't looking to trade their premier edge rusher. First-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer is planning to have the four-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro available for Dallas' Sept. 4 opener at the Philadelphia Eagles. 'We're still planning on moving Micah around and putting him in all the spots that we see him and using our fronts the way we want to see it,' Schottenheimer said. 'We go about our business every day. We live in the moment. We focus in the moment. And again, like I said, I talked to you guys the other day, not going to get a lot into it. 'But I expect Micah to be here.' Parsons is in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal with the Cowboys. He won NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2021, the first of his four seasons with 12-plus sacks since entering the league. Johnson, 54, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act's prohibitions against possessing, selling, transporting and delivering animals to be used in fighting ventures, according to a Department of Justice press release on Monday, Aug. 4. Johnson, a 1993 Heisman Trophy contender, also faces a fine of up to $250,000 on each of the six felony counts. Following the verdict, the Haskell, Okla. native surrendered to the government 190 'pit bull-type' dogs seized in the case. According to the release, 'the government is pursuing forfeiture of these dogs.' Johnson was charged with the felonies in March, in what the DOJ said at the time was the largest number of dogs ever seized from a single person in a federal dog fighting case. Federal authorities alleged Johnson ran the dog-fighting ring under the name 'Mal Kant Kennels' in Haskell and in Broken Arrow, Okla. 'Johnson selectively bred 'champion' and 'grand champion' fighting dogs — dogs that have respectively won three or five fights — to produce offspring with fighting traits and abilities desired by him and others for use in dog fights,' the DOJ said in a news release at the time. 'Johnson marketed and sold stud rights and offspring from winning fighting dogs to other dog fighters looking to incorporate the Mal Kant Kennels 'bloodline' into their own dog fighting operations.'
