Church initiative restores hope in Vereeniging

Vereeniging – In a plight to give back to the community, The St James Development Organisation hosted a transformative event titled Shopping Day, under the theme love, dignity and hope. The event presented an unconventional shopping experience for beneficiaries who had the freedom to choose what they needed without having to pay for it. The event turned into a celebration of humanity, compassion, and respect. The idea is the brainchild of Bishop Sankie Joseph Mokoena, who envisioned a space where acts of kindness could restore dignity to those living in poverty. His vision came to life as hundreds gathered, not only to receive, but to be reminded that they are seen, valued, and loved. 'We didn't come to clothe people; we came to restore their dignity. In a world that often forgets the poor, Shopping Day reminds us that every person deserves to feel seen, respected, and loved,' said Bishop Mokoena. Archbishop Tumelo Mokoena echoed this sentiment during his address. 'Love is not something we say, it's something we do. Shopping Day is love in action. It is dignity handed out with both hands. It is hope wrapped in kindness.' Every item at the event was freely given, with no conditions or expectations. Beneficiaries were welcomed with warmth and offered the opportunity to shop for life's essentials. Police Lieutenant Colonel Motlalepula Molotsi, a local law enforcement leader and advocate for social upliftment, delivered a motivational talk. Drawing from his years in public service, he reminded attendees that hope is not a luxury but a right. The positive impact of the event was evident on the faces of those who benefitted. ‘Pawsome' way to spend Mandela Day

RICHARDS Bay SPCA is calling on animal lovers to 'pawse' their day and spend 67 minutes with the animals in their care this Mandela Day on Friday, 18 July. '67 minutes may not seem like much, but for an animal, it could be the most love and attention they've ever received in their life,' said SPCA chairperson Engela Hamman. ALSO READ: Calling all handymen and women! The 67 minutes on Mandela Day represent the 67 years Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and freedom. Why not unleash some 'ulti-mutt' kindness on the voiceless animals who wait patiently for their 'furever' homes? 'Bring a chair, blanket or cushion and spend your 67 minutes with the animals in our kennels. Bring a toy, a treat, or just your time and love – spoil them with cuddles, care, and kindness. 'Let's fill every kennel with a human heart this Mandela Day and give hope to those still waiting for their forever homes,' said Hamman. Whether it's belly rubs, gentle words or tasty treats, your time can bring 'pawsitivity' to an animal waiting to be loved. Don't have the ZO app?
