Glowing rocks in Michigan? What to know about 'Yooperlites'
Yooperlites are rocks that fluoresce in the dark under ultraviolet light. They became known when an Upper Peninsula resident discovered them in 2017, according to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
Spring is the best time to search for Yooperlites and other rocks, according to Pure Michigan, because winter ice moved beach sand and stones around, leaving newly unearthed stones along Lake Superior's shoreline to be discovered.
Throughout the year, the best time to seek Yooperlites and other stones is after a storm, when waves have disrupted and uncovered new rocks.
Here's what to know about the rock that is found in the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior:
Yooperlites are a variety of sodalite-rich syenite found in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Syenite is a coarse-grained, plutonic (intrusive) igneous rock that primarily consists of the minerals feldspar, typically orthoclase feldspar, and often includes smaller amounts of other minerals such as hornblende, mica or amphibole. Unlike granite, which is another common intrusive igneous rock, syenite contains minimal to no quartz, Geology Science said.
Sodalite is a deep blue to blue-violet mineral best known for its use in jewelry, sculpture, and decorative stonework. Sodalite forms in igneous rocks that crystallized from sodium-rich, silica-poor magmas. That's how it got its name — soda and lithos, or 'sodium stone," according to Rock Your World gem and art gallery.
In normal light, a Yooperlite looks like granite. Sodalite replaces quartz, so the larger the mineral size, the brighter the shine, EGLE said. There are roughly five classes of Yooperlites:
Gemmy (mostly sodalite or large sodalite crystal, the entire specimen glows orange)
Snowflake or Flower (similar to snowflake obsidian, large blotches on the surface that look like snowflakes, but crystal glow does not penetrate into the interior)
Striated (sodalite fills cracks in the rock matrix, so appears as orange lines or veins)
Spray Paint (tiny crystal droplets scattered around the surface)
Galaxy (larger crystals than spray paint that are dispersed in the rock that glow like the night sky, crystals penetrate the matrix)
The rocks can be found in different areas throughout Michigan, but are most likely to be found in the Upper Peninsula along Lake Superior, often on beaches near Grand Marais and in the Keweenaw Peninsula.
Yooperlites can be found as loose pebbles and cobbles along many Lake Superior beaches and even in some inland gravel pits. The stones are derived from igneous rocks near Marathon, Ontario, known as the Coldwell Alkaline Complex and were transported into Michigan by glaciers during periods of continental glaciation.
How to search for them:
Start with a beach that has stones.
Get a good UV light (365 wavelength).
Wear safety glasses with UV protection.
Take along a garden tine rake to move the deposited gravel around or to reach out into the water. Yooperlites may not shine on all surfaces, so moving stones around will increase your chance of seeing them.
Be strategic: Use a sweeping side-to-side motion for better coverage and light angle about 6 to 8 feet in front.
Walk at a normal pace and shine the light with a sweeping motion.
According to the EGLE, an individual cannot exceed 25 pounds per year on state-owned and public trust lands.
These identification techniques, according to the EGLE, can help rock hunters determine the type of rocks they have:
Color (also color of a "streak" if it can be made by swiping the specimen on a piece of porcelain, creating a powder)
Luster (shiny, dull, glassy)
Fluorescence (shines under UV light)
Shape/structure (crystal form or amorphous?)
Breakage (how does it break apart, cleavage or fracture?)
Density/specific gravity (can get an idea by "hefting" to see if it's heavy for its size)
Magnetism
Smell
Radioactivity

Full moon could disrupt peak views of popular meteors. When to watch the Perseids
Stargazers, you'll soon have a chance to glimpse the year's most popular meteor shower streaking over Michigan skies, but the full moon could get in the way. The annual Perseids will peak in mid-August, leaving bursts of light and color up above as meteors whiz by throughout the night in the best meteor shower of 2025, according to NASA. However, you may want to plan for viewing on alternate days during the meteor shower to avoid any disruptions from the sturgeon moon, experts advise. Be sure to also keep a lookout for clear, dark, night skies to observe the Perseids. Here's what to know. When do the Perseids peak? The Perseid meteor shower will peak on the night of Aug. 12 overnight into the early morning hours of Aug. 13, per What else will be in August skies? The sturgeon moon will peak Aug. 9. What is the Perseid meteor shower? The Perseids is a strong, fast meteor shower featuring about 50 to 100 meteors per hour, per NASA. Bright meteors and fireballs, very bright meteors, frequently streak across the night sky, creating a path of light and color overhead. The meteors appear to come from the area of the constellation Perseus in the sky, NASA says, though the meteors can be seen in any part of the night sky, per the American Meteor Society. Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through dusty debris trails left by comets and broken asteroid bits as they orbit the sun, NASA says. The debris collides with Earth's atmosphere at high speed and disintegrates, creating fiery and colorful streaks in the sky. The meteors in the Perseid meteor shower come from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, a large comet discovered by American astronomers Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle in 1862, per NASA. Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli uncovered the comet as the source of the Perseids in 1865. When is the best time to view the Perseids? The best time to watch the Perseids in the Northern Hemisphere is in the predawn hours, though meteors may be visible as early as 10 p.m., the space agency says. Confirmed: Uranus Really Is Hotter Than It Has Any Right to Be
A new analysis of decades' worth of observations has revealed that Uranus does indeed emit more heat than it receives from the rays of the Sun. This conclusion, arrived at by two independent teams of scientists, finally resolves a puzzle that first emerged when Voyager 2 cruised past the stinky planet all the way back in 1986. Those observations suggested that Uranus was not emitting any excess heat – a finding that put it at odds with all the other giant planets in the Solar System. A team led by planetary scientist Xinyue Wang, formerly of the University of Houston, now at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has now found that Uranus is emitting around 12.5 percent more heat than it receives from the Sun. This is consistent with findings about Uranus made by a team led by planetary physicist Patrick Irwin of the University of Oxford in the UK, made available earlier this year on arXiv. Related: For The First Time, Scientists Have Detected X-Rays Coming Out of Uranus "This means it's still slowly losing leftover heat from its early history, a key piece of the puzzle that helps us understand its origins and how it has changed over time," Wang says. "From a scientific perspective, this study helps us better understand Uranus and other giant planets. For future space exploration, I think it strengthens the case for a mission to Uranus." Previous research has already shown that Voyager 2's flyby occurred at a time when elevated solar activity was making Uranus behave in anomalous ways. It is, therefore, perhaps not surprising to find that other readings made by the probe may have misrepresented the planet's usual state of existence. However, the findings of Wang's team still suggest that something weird is going on with the planet. Jupiter emits 113 percent, Saturn 139 percent, and Neptune 162 percent more heat than they receive from the Sun. Since Neptune is farther from the Sun than Uranus, the distance can't be an explanation for Uranus's lower internal temperature. This suggests that there's still something weird happening inside the giant – whether it's a different internal structure, or something about its evolutionary history. This difference, the researchers say, underscores the need to probe our Solar System's overlooked outer planets. "A future flagship mission to Uranus would provide critical observations to address more unresolved questions of this enigmatic ice giant," they write in their paper. The research has been published in Geophysical Research Letters.
