Man (28) jailed after being caught with €300k worth of cocaine
A judge has imposed a nine-year three-month prison term on a 28-year-old west Clare man after he was caught with just under €300,000 worth of cocaine and cannabis. At Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Francis Comerford imposed the 111-month prison sentence on Stephen Healy of The Hand, Cloonalheen East, Miltown Malbay for 'repeated drug trafficking' and 'offending of the highest order'. Advertisement Judge Comerford imposed a 66 month sentence for the possession of cannabis and cocaine valued at €230,470 with the intent to sell or supply on July 11th 2023 at a property at Drumatehy, Connolly, Co Clare. Judge Comerford imposed a 45 month prison term consecutive to the drug dealing offence for a money laundering charge concerning €40,645 on the same date. Described in court previously as a 'typical country lad' by his solicitor, Daragh Hassett, Mr Healy evaded capture on July 11th 2023 but was arrested by gardaí on August 13th 2023 after a second drugs swoop by gardaí on the same date where Gardai recovered €37,212 worth of cocaine and €31,568 in cannabis at a mobile home at Furoor Upper, Kilkee in west Clare. Judge Comerford said that 'these types of crime cause great harm to society'. Advertisement Judge Comerford said that Mr Healy 'was holding the money for drug dealers'. At Garda interview, Mr Healy said that he was looking after the drugs and cash as he had a drug debt to pay off. Mr Healy - who entered guilty pleas to the charges - told the Gardai 'I am ashamed and I deeply regret it'. The offending occurred during a previous 20 month suspended sentence imposed on Mr Healy for drug dealing. Advertisement Judge Comerford said: 'A very significant aggravating factor in the case is that a person who was afforded a very significant opportunity to turn away from criminality commits further offences relating to drug dealing while that suspended sentence is in place." At the sentencing hearing, Det Sgt Dara O'Sullivan described Mr Healy as an "integral part of a drug trafficking operation that was going on in this case'. Counsel for Mr Healy, Lorcan Connolly SC told the court that Mr Healy lived at home with his mother and received the carer's allowance to look after his mother who requires the use of a wheelchair. Mr Connolly said that Mr Healy is very close to his mother, who he said, has her own health difficulties. Advertisement On Mr Healy, Mr Connolly said: 'That is not someone who is high up in the drugs trade. He is someone who has nothing." Mr Connolly said that 'the mobile home wasn't his, the house wasn't his and vehicles weren't his' and that Mr Healy "was acting under duress" when handling the drugs and money. Mr Connolly said Mr Healy was 'previously subject to an assault by dark forces and his mother's house was damaged'. Mr Connolly read out extracts of a letter from a former employer of Mr Healy who said that the accused 'is not a bad person but is someone who has made bad choices'. Advertisement The businessman said that Mr Healy faces a lengthy prison sentence ahead but added that he will do all he can to support him 'and I will take him back into employment when he is released'. The employer said: 'I have paid thousands of euro to these horrible people to get them off Stephen's back.' Mr Connolly also handed in a written personal plea from Mr Healy's mother and he described the letter as 'genuine and from the heart'. Mr Connolly said Mr Healy is a father of two young children with the youngest only born a few months ago while Mr Healy was in custody. Mr Healy has been on remand in custody since last November. Mr Connolly said that Mr Healy 'assures me that he really wants to turn the corner and really wants to have a bright future'. Judge Comerford backdated the sentence to last November.

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EMMERDALE fans are throwing out theories about the on-screen identity of a former EastEnders star who has signed up for life in the Dales. ITV viewers reckon they've got actor Chris Coghill's latest soap project sussed after it was revealed he'd channel hopped to the Yorkshire-based show. He has begun filming for his stint on the show this week. Bosses have revealed he's playing a character called Kev who is on the hunt for someone already in the village. Now loyal Emmerdale fans are already suspecting who exactly Kev is. One remarked: "The Emmerdale casting department is on fire atm," as another suggested: "I'll put money on it now, hes going to turn out to be Dylans Dad or relative." Back in June we told how Dylan Penders, played by Fred Kettle, will be returning to ITV screens soon after months off the show. The character was first introduced to Emmerdale viewers earlier this year when he befriended April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan), during her stint being unhoused and living on the streets. Yet after a stint in rehab he will make his return, with Emmerdale Producer, Laura Shaw, previously dropping a hint he could have family members to follow - linking in with the fan theory. At the time, she said: "He's [Dylan] going to be bringing his past back to the village with him. And that's going to cause huge problems for April and the wider family there. Laura added: "We've got a couple of exciting new castings that are joining us for that story, but I'm not allowed to tell you who they are. Watch this space, because it's very exciting." Shock death rocks Emmerdale as John Sugden takes drastic action And after her comments about new character Kev, fans suspect the link further. On Chris' soap role, she said: 'We are delighted that someone of Chris' calibre has joined our cast. 'I think the viewers will be intrigued to see how the character of Kev will cause shockwaves this autumn. 'Kev has a strong connection to one of our characters and it's safe to say his arrival is going to be a massive surprise that will have major repercussions for some of our villagers.' Meanwhile, another fan suggested Kev is: "Someone Robert met in prison." Robert made a shock return to Emmerdale in May after six years away from the soap. CHRIS' TAKE Talking of his new soap role away from EastEnders, Chris said: 'I am really happy to be joining the cast of Emmerdale. 'Kev is definitely going to shake things up a bit and I'm looking forward to getting cracking!' Chris has starred in a string of high profile shows including The Bay, Slow Horses and Shameless. 5 Fans now think Chris' character Kev will be Dylan's dad Credit: ITV

'I was surrounded by Southport attack rioters - my wife and I thought we'd be killed'
EXCLUSIVE: Youtuber Wesley Winter has revealed how he became caught up in the Middlesbrough riots after the Southport stabbings where Axel Rudakubana killed three young girls A YouTuber has described the horrific moment that his wife was surrounded by violent rioters in Middlesbrough in the wake of the Southport killings in July last year. Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, died after being stabbed by Axel Rudakubana at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop in Southport last July. The mass stabbing resulted in widespread protests and riots across the country - explored in Channel 4 's new documentary One Day in Southport. Wesley Winter, who contributes to the documentary, has opened up in an exclusive chat with The Mirror about filming the riots in Middlesbrough on 4 August. What was meant to be a peaceful protest in light of the fatal Southport stabbings turned into riots which were fuelled by anti-Islamophobic and racist misinformation around the killer's identity. Over 1,000 people attended the riot, which saw some smash shop windows, attack homes and burn cars. "We saw a car get burnt down. For me, the most shocking thing was that there was a car trying to get through and people were saying, 'If you're not white, you can't go through,'" says Wesley - who is half Korean. "That was really to see because Middlesbrough was quite a diverse area. "It did seem like it was an excuse for just anyone to break houses and smash windows and target anyone and everyone. It was unfair." For Wesley's wife Cailin - a Chinese national - the experience proved to be traumatic. While waiting in their car for Wesley to film, she was surrounded by masked rioters who began attacking the vehicle. "They were like monkeys, yelling, shouting and jumping around, jumping on the car one-by-one," she says. "They kicked the windows, smashed the windows and celebrated. I realised that they didn't fear anything. "My brain was empty. I didn't know what to do because I thought if they see me, they're going to kill me because they were so excited. My husband called and told me to get out of the car and run, but I said, 'There's 30 of them and someone is riding a bicycle. If I run, they can so easily chase me and catch me. I felt like, 'I'm going to die today.' "I could feel the heat, I could smell the smoke. There was a helicopter in the sky. It was like the Walking Dead. I never thought we would see that in real life." Wesley adds, "Stuff was getting thrown. I realised that these aren't normal people and anything can happen." The incident has deeply affected X. "It was really traumatic because she's not familiar with England that much. Now when she goes to the high street, if people are riding on bikes with masks on, it's traumatic for her," he says. The police arrested 43 people in connection with the violence in Middlesbrough. Wesley thinks that the government could have stepped in sooner to stop the damage from happening. "There was a lot of damage control that could have been done from the government. There was a lack of information at the time around who the attacker was," he says. "There was so much speculation about who he was and I know there are laws around it but for this particular case, I think there should have been more information to reduce the risk. "People wanted to funnel their anger somewhere and they just chose the streets. It was really unfortunate." As for why viewers should watch One Day in Southport, Wesley says that it adds a different perspective to the horrific story. "First and foremost, it remembers the three girls and the people who were injured at what happened in Southport," he says. "I think it isn't spoken about enough that the number of people who died could have been higher."
